As a seasoned gamer who has been around since the 90s and witnessed the evolution of JRPGs, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia upon hearing about the Tales of series’ 30th anniversary celebration in 2025. The announcement of more remasters under the Remastered Project is music to my ears, as it means I’ll get to revisit some classic titles that shaped my gaming journey.
The “Tales of” series is preparing to mark its 30th anniversary in 2025, and during a recent broadcast, producer Yusuke Tomizawa revealed that further remastered versions are in development. This project, known as the Remastered Project, intends to make more classic “Tales of” games playable on contemporary gaming systems. The series has previously experimented with remasters; for instance, “Tales of Symphonia” received two remasters and was also ported to other platforms.
The “Tales of” series is one of the longest-running Japanese Role Playing Game (JRPG) franchises in the gaming market. Launched in 1995 with the debut of “Tales of Phantasia” for the SNES, this franchise has produced over fifteen primary installments, along with many spin-offs and mobile games. The latest addition, “Tales of Arise,” achieved impressive sales on Steam, selling more than three million units, which might make it the highest-selling mainline game in the series; a title previously held by “Tales of Vesperia” and “Tales of Symphonia.
Given the growing significance Bandai Namco holds within the gaming world, it’s not unexpected that they are increasing their financial backing for the franchise, even if that involves resurrecting past favorites on contemporary systems. Producer Tomizawa has announced additional remasters of the Tales of series, beginning with Tales of Graces F Remastered, slated for release in January 2025. He also emphasized their intention to regularly distribute remasters, bolstered by a specialized development team dedicated to this project.
Tales of Producer Confirms a Development Line For More Remasters
In the English broadcast, the creators of “Tales of” admitted to the longer intervals between new mainline releases, which previously came out approximately every year or two. The most recent mainline game, “Tales of Arise,” was released in 2021, and while it received the “Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn” DLC in 2023, fans were disappointed by the time gap. The developers explained this delay by citing improvements in gaming technology and escalating development expenses. This situation led to the formation of two separate development teams – one for creating new games and another for updating classic “Tales of” titles.
Though the Remastered Project only kicked off recently, Bandai Namco has a long history of remastering and remaking entries in the popular franchise. Tales of Phantasia received remasters for the PS1 and GBA, along with a fully-voiced remake for the PSP. Initially released for the Nintendo DS, Tales of Hearts was remade for the PS Vita, transitioning from a 2D perspective with dual screens to a 3D view with a single-screen interface. The fan-favorite JRPG Tales of Symphonia launched on the GameCube, received a PS2 port with extra content, followed by a remastered duology on PS3, a Windows port, and, most recently, another remaster in 2023 for modern consoles. Bandai Namco seems keen on keeping the Tales of series alive with new or revamped entries going forward.
