Ed Boon, head of NetherRealm Studios, has disclosed that Mortal Kombat 1 has achieved the highest sales among current-generation fighting games. Although Mortal Kombat 1 didn’t receive as much acclaim as its previous versions and is no longer getting new content, it still managed to gain significant popularity.
As a dedicated Mortal Kombat enthusiast, I was thrilled when Mortal Kombat 1 made its grand debut in 2023 as a rejuvenated take on the iconic fighting series. Critics generally gave it a thumbs-up, with an average score of 84 on OpenCritic. However, a portion of us diehard fans found ourselves voicing concerns about this new release. Some of our criticisms focused on feelings that the game fell short in terms of content compared to previous titles and had certain hiccups with its online experience.
Mortal Kombat 1 Has Sold Over 6.2 Million Copies
Although faced with some controversy within the franchise, Mortal Kombat 1 has managed to sell an impressive 6.2 million units as per Ed Boon (as reported by PC Gamer). While these figures are overshadowed by the 12 million copies sold for Mortal Kombat 10 and the record-breaking 15 million for MK11, it’s worth noting that Mortal Kombat 1 still leads as the best-selling fighting game of this generation. Other notable games of the era, such as Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, have sold around 5 and 3 million copies respectively. NetherRealm’s Injustice 2, for which no official numbers are available, is estimated to have reached over 1.5 million sales in just three months. The only game that potentially threatens Mortal Kombat 1’s dominance is Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, selling 5 million copies within the first three months of its release. However, this game has not provided any official sales updates for the past six months.
It’s quite intriguing that this news comes up now, considering NetherRealm Studios declared in May that further DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 would not be released. However, they plan to maintain the game with balance tweaks and repairs, while shifting their attention towards their next project.

Fans had been apprehensive about the conclusion of content support for the original Mortal Kombat (MK1), especially since the Definitive Edition dropped unexpectedly earlier this year. While it was still being maintained, MK1 received not one but two character packs and the Khaos Reigns expansion.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but wonder if Mortal Kombat 1 will maintain its throne as the epitome of this gaming generation. I eagerly anticipate where NetherRealm Studios will steer the next installment in the series to regain its massive appeal. Fingers crossed that we’ll keep experiencing top-tier fighting games, and the upcoming generation promises even fiercer competition than what we have now.
