Without prior warning, Warner Bros. Games has unveiled the Definitive Edition of Mortal Kombat 1, a highly anticipated title initially launched in 2023. This game, like many in the esteemed fighting game series, garnered generally favorable reviews from critics and proved to be commercially successful. NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games have been consistently providing updates and additional paid content for Mortal Kombat 1 since its release, enhancing the gaming experience over the past two years.

The original Mortal Kombat released in 2011 has been expanded over the years through two DLC packs, introducing iconic characters from various media. The first DLC pack introduced Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Homelander, while the second added Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian, and the T-1000 from Terminator 2. Now, there’s a new edition of the game that comes with both the base game and the DLC content bundled together.

It seems a tad disappointing that the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2 might not include Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, given the performance and graphic issues in its current Nintendo Switch version which aren’t present on other platforms. A native port for the Nintendo Switch 2 could solve these problems for fans, but as of now, it looks like Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition won’t be making an appearance on Nintendo’s upcoming next-gen hybrid console.

Regarding Mortal Kombat 1, if you’re a fighting game enthusiast who hasn’t grabbed it yet, I highly recommend going for the Definitive Edition. With so much content to explore, you’ll find yourself engaged for quite some time. As for the Mortal Kombat series, future games are planned, and the Mortal Kombat 2 film is set to premiere in theaters on October 24.
