Mortal Kombat 1 is Giving One of Its Oldest Characters a Huge Role in the Khaos Reigns Expansion

As a long-time Mortal Kombat enthusiast, I must say that the expansion DLC for Mortal Kombat 1, Khaos Reigns, has truly taken my breath away! The addition of Noob Saibot as a more prominent character than ever before is simply fantastic. His backstory and evolution from Bi-Han, the first Sub-Zero, to a wraith under Quan Chi’s control, has always been intriguing, but seeing him take on such a significant role in Khaos Reigns’ narrative is truly thrilling!

In the latest DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 titled “Khaos Reigns,” three new characters have been added to the fight: Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot. These characters play crucial roles in the storyline of Khaos Reigns as Titan Havik endeavors to throw the multiverse into disorder and chaos. The Lin Kuei’s technological advancements are on display through the introduction of new power armor for Cyrax and Sektor, designed specifically to counter Scorpion’s new Shirai Ryu clan. In contrast, Noob Saibot takes a more prominent position than ever before in Mortal Kombat games, serving as the secondary antagonist in Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns.

Noob Saibot Explained

Similar to many renowned characters from the Mortal Kombat series, Noob Saibot initially debuted as a hidden character in the arcade versions of Mortal Kombat games. He made his first appearance in Mortal Kombat 2, manifesting as a dark outline of Sub-Zero’s ninja sprite. However, it wasn’t until Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 that Saibot transformed into a playable fighter, no longer confined to secret status. Over time, it was disclosed that Noob Saibot was originally Bi-Han, the first Sub-Zero, who was slain by Scorpion during the initial Mortal Kombat tournament. After his death, Bi-Han was brought back to life as a spectral being by the sorcerer Quan Chi in the Netherrealm, eventually becoming Noob Saibot.

In the original storyline of Mortal Kombat, Saibot aligns with the Brotherhood of Shadow, assisting Shinnok and later Shao Khan in their attempts to conquer the realms. In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Saibot launched an assault on the Lin Kuei, aiming to either eradicate them or convert their members into cybernetic demons, but was thwarted by Taven, a demigod. In the 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat, Bi-Han is still killed by Scorpion and brought back as Noob Saibot by Quan Chi, only to be defeated again, this time by Cyber Sub-Zero and Night Wolf. For a brief period in Mortal Kombat 11, Noob Saibot collaborates with the Titan Kronika, hoping she would create a new faction for him to command.

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share an interesting tidbit about the enigmatic character, Noob Saibot. His name is a clever nod to the creators of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon and John Tobias, as his name is derived from their last names spelled backward!

Mortal Kombat 1’s Noob Saibot Drive for Lin Kuei Domination

To fully grasp the character of Noob Saibot from Khaos Reign, players should initially familiarize themselves with Titan Liu Kang’s Sub-Zero. In this particular narrative, Liu Kang transformed the Lin Kuei into protectors of Earthrealm rather than a group of ninja assassins. Although this change brought about a period of peace, Sub-Zero (Bi-Han) aspired to make the Lin Kuei the dominant force in Earthrealm and disregard helping the God of Fire and Thunder. To achieve this goal, Bi-Han allowed his father’s death, allied with General Shao’s rebellion on Outworld, and attempted to kill his brother Kuai Liang (Scorpion). By seizing control of the Lin Kuei, Bi-Han, while Scorpion and Smoke founded the new Shirai Ryu clan to honor the original mission of the Lin Kuei: defending Earthrealm and confronting Bi-Han.

In another turn of events, Bi-Han backed Sektor’s power armor project, employing it in an attempt to kill Scorpion at his wedding with Harumi Shirai. Caught in the act, both Bi-Han and Sektor were apprehended. However, Bi-Han pursued Titan Havik into another dimension following Havik’s troops’ invasion of Outworld and abduction of Geras. In this new realm, Bi-Han was swiftly vanquished and twisted by Chaos, transforming into a new incarnation of Noob Saibot. Initially serving the Brotherhood of Chaos, Saibot was later bested by an alternate Tanya and eventually restored to his original state under Liu Kang’s care.

Noob Saibot’s Ending in Mortal Kombat 1 Khaos Reigns

In the end, Titan Havik aims to swallow the universe with Chaos through the use of Kamidogu, only to meet resistance from Liu Kang’s troops together with Saibot. Employing his newly-acquired chaos powers, Noob Saibot tears Havik asunder, but is halted by Liu Kang in terror that Havik’s demise could lead to the annihilation of his universe and countless innocents. Attempting another assault, Saibot is thwarted by Geras who restrains him within the Temple of Elements until Liu Kang can completely undo Bi-Han’s metamorphosis. Nevertheless, both Sektor and Saibot’s conclusions in Mortal Kombat 1 depict Sektor liberating Saibot, leading to his subsequent onslaught against the Shaolin and Shirai Ryu.
