Summary
- NetherRealm Studios is rumored to be developing a new story expansion for Mortal Kombat 1.
- Fans were disappointed by the rumored cancelation of Kombat Pack 3.
- Recently uncovered info suggests that Mortal Kombat 1 may not be abandoned after all.
It’s being whispered around town that NetherRealm Studios could be cooking up an exciting new story addition for the first installment of Mortal Kombat. Although the studio has kept tight-lipped about its plans, recent findings hint that they might have been secretly developing a highly anticipated expansion pack for Mortal Kombat 1 – something some enthusiasts thought had been scrapped.
In November 2024, whispers circulated that NetherRealm had abandoned the plans for Mortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack 3. At that time, rumors pointed to the cancellation being due to low sales of the Khaos Reigns expansion. Yet, NetherRealm never confirmed these reports. The anticipated Kombat Pack 3 was supposed to enrich the campaign of MK1′, causing dismay among fans when they heard about its potential cancelation. However, recent indications suggest that the campaign expansion may still be in the works.
Based on a recently published job post, it seems NetherRealm is seeking a seasoned animator to contribute to their “story mode campaign.” The vacancy description also requires applicants to have experience in martial arts/fighting games, adding fire to the rumors about a potential Mortal Kombat 1 story expansion. Although this role might be associated with an undisclosed project or a fresh fighting game franchise, the limited scope of hiring a single senior animator and lack of broader team growth hints that they could be focusing on one of their established titles, possibly Mortal Kombat 1.
Mortal Kombat 1 May Not be Abandoned, as Some Had Feared

Initially, Mortal Kombat 1’s narrative refresh sparked enthusiasm among fans who appreciated the revamped lore. They had anticipated additional storyline development through DLCs, which began with the launch of Khaos Reigns expansion. Regrettably, subsequent updates didn’t delve further into the campaign. In January 2025, a significant update for Mortal Kombat 1 arrived, introducing Conan the Barbarian as a playable character. This was followed by a March patch that brought in the T-1000 and Madam Bo, accompanied by gameplay enhancements.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed that although Mortal Kombat 1 hasn’t seen any significant story expansions lately, its recent updates have been positively received by us enthusiasts. The game’s player trends on Steam suggest these updates might have even sparked a small surge in activity among players. If the whispers are true and NetherRealm has indeed brought on a new team member to work on another storyline expansion, it gives us fans something to eagerly anticipate. A new DLC could potentially reel back former players and keep current ones hooked, providing us with more reasons to stay engaged while we wait for the next chapter in this epic series.
