Mortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack 2 T-1000 is Too Little Too Late

Mortal Kombat 1's Kombat Pack 2 T-1000 is Too Little Too Late

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia mixed with a pinch of disappointment upon learning about the T-1000’s arrival in Mortal Kombat 1. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the crossover madness that has been going on in the series lately, and the T-1000 is a fantastic addition to the roster. However, it seems like the developers missed an opportunity to create an epic showdown between two iconic Terminators.

Introducing the Terminator T-1000 in Mortal Kombat 1’s second Kombat Pack is a nod to action movie legends, but it highlights a potential oversight. It’s not unexpected that Mortal Kombat 1 has incorporated another film character into its roster, given the trend of crossovers in recent games. It seems likely that the T-1000 won’t be the last action movie character to join Mortal Kombat. However, the timing of the T-1000’s introduction could spark some debate.

As a die-hard Mortal Kombat fan, by the complete unveiling of the second Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat 1, we’ll have six additional fighters joining the battlefield. These newcomers include:

  • Noob Saibot
  • Sektor
  • Cyrax
  • Conan the Barbarian
  • Ghostface
  • T-1000

In full, Kombat Pack 2 will increase the game’s playable characters to a total of 35 (excluding Kameo fighters). This is just two less than what Mortal Kombat 11 eventually had when all DLC was included, suggesting that Mortal Kombat 1 could potentially surpass its predecessor in terms of character roster size. Given the number of high-quality Mortal Kombat characters still to be added, it’s likely that more will be joining soon.

Mortal Kombat 1 Might Be Late to the Party With the T-1000

Mortal Kombat 1 is Adding the T-1000 From Terminator 2

As a member of the latest set of guest characters in Mortal Kombat, the T-1000 continues the trend of action and horror film characters entering the fight. In Terminator 2, with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s titular Terminator becoming an ally and protector of John and Sarah Connor, a new Terminator came in to be the new antagonist. Composed of liquid metal, the T-1000 combined shapeshifting and nigh-invulnerability to be a terrifying foe. In addition, it also adopts a fairly cruel and mocking personality while doing its job. A classic action movie villain like the T-1000 sounds like a natural choice to join Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 11 Missed the Chance To Have Two Terminators Fight

Although it boasts impressive credentials, it might have been more advantageous for the T-1000 to make its first appearance alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator in Mortal Kombat 11. Interestingly, the T-800 was a playable character in Mortal Kombat 11, joined by other action legends like Rambo and Robocop. Had the T-1000 debuted in Mortal Kombat 11, it would have given fans an exciting match-up between the two Terminators. Unfortunately, they were separated by one game, leaving us to ponder what might have transpired. The distinct fighting styles of both Terminators, with the T-800 relying on guns and brute strength, in contrast to the T-1000’s ability to morph into blades, would have made for intriguing character differences.

Mortal Kombat 1’s T-1000 May Not Match the Impact of Mortal Kombat 11’s Terminator

Introducing the T-1000 into Mortal Kombat 1 is a good move, but it lacks a certain appeal without the presence of the T-800. The T-800 is the more iconic and memorable of the two due to Schwarzenegger’s portrayal, making the T-1000 feel out of place as a standalone character. However, Robert Patrick’s performance gives the T-1000 enough personality to shine on its own. Unfortunately, Mortal Kombat 1 may not offer the Terminator vs. Terminator battle it could have without both characters together.

The T-1000 would have been an exciting addition to Mortal Kombat 1, but it’s entered the scene a bit too late to make the strong impression it could have. Expansion packs for Mortal Kombat 1 are expected to continue growing the game, with more fighters on the way, potentially including the T-1000. However, if the developers don’t bring back the T-800 for another appearance, fans won’t be able to recreate their classic movie matchup. This means that, unless something changes, the T-1000’s introduction in Mortal Kombat 1 might feel like we’re only getting half of a complete collection.
