More recently, enthusiasts playing the game Mortal Kombat 1 have stumbled upon a completely new character: a pink-clad ninja dubbed Floyd. Named after the iconic British rock band Pink Floyd, this agile ninja is modeled on the original design of Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s fighter, Kameo. To meet Floyd, players must tackle a series of tasks, signified by the emergence of a pink Mortal Kombat symbol. Ultimately, they will engage in combat with Floyd within a fresh arena called The Field, which mimics the field depicted in Mortal Kombat 1’s debut trailer. As gamers work to uncover Floyd, it’s possible they may not be aware of the multitude of hidden characters that Mortal Kombat is famous for.
Mortal Kombat’s History of Secret Characters
The secret characters in the Mortal Kombat series can be traced back to 1992 with the initial arcade version of Mortal Kombat. When a player scores a double perfect victory in single-player mode, finishes the battle using a Fatality, and a shadow passes the moon, text will appear saying “You have discovered me; now prove yourself!”. This leads players to the bottom of the Pit where they face Reptile, who is a green version of Scorpion. After defeating him, players receive 10 million points, but Reptile couldn’t be controlled until Mortal Kombat 2. The enigmatic character of Reptile and the challenging conditions to meet him resulted in countless players trying to defeat him, and Midway Games aimed to recreate this experience in later games.
1993’s Mortal Kombat 2 by Midway introduced three hidden characters, each requiring unique techniques to access them. To encounter Smoke, a green character resembling Reptile who appears in the Portal arena when Dan Forden yells “toasty”, players must press Down and Start simultaneously. If players manage to win 50 consecutive two-player matches, they’ll be taken to Goro’s Lair to battle Noob Saibot, a black version of Sub-Zero. Lastly, by defeating all opponents in the tournament using only low kicks and emerging victorious in the final match, players will find themselves fighting Jade, a green character similar to Kitana, in Goro’s Lair.
In the wake of the success of characters like Reptile, Smoke, Noob Saibot, and Jade, Midway and then NetherRealm Studios started introducing hidden characters in the majority of their main Mortal Kombat series. Examples include:
- Cyber Smoke
- Ermac
- Rain
- Chameleon
- Khameleon
- Meat
- Mokap
- Blaze
- Floyd
Floyd’s Story Potential in Mortal Kombat 2
In the Mortal Kombat series, each secret character previously introduced is woven into the storyline in some capacity, either as main characters or through backstories mentioned in their descriptions. For instance, Reptile became a faithful servant of Shao Kahn after his realm, Zaterra, was overtaken and merged with Outworld. Smoke was once a member of the Lin Kuei clan but was enslaved and transformed into LK-7T2. Noob Saibot is actually a spectral version of the original Sub-Zero Bi-Han, who was manipulated by Quan Chi in the Netherrealm following his death at Scorpion’s hands. Jade, an Edenian, is depicted as Kitana’s friend and ally, working together to oppose Shao Kahn.
According to the progression of hidden plot points, there’s a strong possibility that Netherrealm Studios may introduce Floyd as a new playable character in Mortal Kombat 2. This could involve creating a unique narrative for him within the game’s main storyline. If this is the case, Floyd might be revealed to be a Saurian due to his pale complexion and white eyes, much like Mortal Kombat 1’s Khameleon. In this scenario, Floyd could be a loyal ally of Empress Mileena in her struggle against General Shao, possibly related or at least associated with Khameleon. On the other hand, Floyd might join the Shirai Ryu as their latest recruit due to his ninja abilities and resemblance to characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
In a Mortal Kombat game, Floyd is the first fresh secret character to be unveiled since Blaze and Mokap were revealed back in 2002’s Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
