Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Release Date Gets Pushed Back

It appears that enthusiasts of the “Mortal Kombat” movie series face a delay in their anticipation, as the scheduled release of “Mortal Kombat 2” has been moved to 2026.

Fans caught their initial glimpse of ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ not too long before the release was postponed. The trailer revealed Karl Urban’s interpretation of Johnny Cage, portraying his struggle to adapt to the lethal tournament and the extraordinary abilities wielded by many contestants.

Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Gets Delayed to 2026

Initially, Mortal Kombat 2 was slated for a theater release on October 24, 2025. However, Deadline reports that it has been rescheduled to May 15, 2026. No specific reason for the delay has been disclosed, but releasing it around Memorial Day and the summer season might benefit the film as action movies often thrive during these periods when schools let out and temperatures start rising.

Benefiting from increased ticket sales during the summer is probably advantageous for the movie, but it’s also set to debut ahead of a significant action-adventure film titled Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, airing on May 22, 2026. Apart from The Mandalorian and Grogu, there’s not expected to be much direct competition for Mortal Kombat 2 until mid-June, leaving ample room for this fighting game adaptation to make a strong showing at the box office.

2021’s “Mortal Kombat” movie received mixed opinions from critics, but it garnered more favorable ratings from viewers and ultimately proved to be a box office hit. With a production budget of $55 million, it earned $84.4 million at the box office, surpassing expectations and setting a new record for HBO Max’s most successful film debut at that time. Given its release in April, a sequel launch in mid-May could boost its earnings even further. However, with a reported budget of $68 million for “Mortal Kombat 2”, it will need to do well to justify the increased investment.

It’s uncertain if Mortal Kombat 2 will live up to the anticipation of fans and investors, but given its highly successful Red Band trailer that garnered nearly 107 million views within a day, outperforming all other Red Band trailers as well as the initial view count of the Mortal Kombat movie’s trailer (which gained 47 million views in its first day), it could potentially rule the box office.
