As a seasoned Mortal Kombat enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say, I am both excited and intrigued by the upcoming sequel, Mortal Kombat 2. The return of Johnny Cage, one of the franchise’s most iconic characters, is a welcome sight, especially after his conspicuous absence in the 2021 reboot.

Mortal Kombat is coming back, featuring a much-loved character from the fanbase. But, in contrast to the previous game, Mortal Kombat 2 will portray this character in a fresh and unique manner.

Fans of the Mortal Kombat series were dismayed when the 2021 film omitted their beloved character, but anticipate seeing him prominently in the sequel. However, his appearance and personality in the movie could differ significantly from his game counterpart. Reports suggest he’ll sport a new style and look, or display a personality contrasting with his initial portrayal in the franchise. One Mortal Kombat actor hinted that the character would be played in an “unconventional” manner.

As a die-hard Mortal Kombat fan, I was bummed out to see Johnny Cage, my favorite action star and martial artist, missing from the 2021 reboot. He’s usually right at the heart of things alongside Raiden and Liu Kang. But here’s some exciting news for us fans! The sequel is reportedly going to bring back Johnny Cage, with Karl Urban stepping into his iconic role.

In January this year, the filming for Mortal Kombat 2 came to an end, and Jason Statham, who played Johnny Cage in the movie, posted a photo with his fellow cast members on their last day at work. The image also included some members of the production crew enjoying themselves together. In the caption, Statham thanked everyone involved and expressed his enthusiasm for the project while hinting that he couldn’t wait for audiences to watch it. He wrote, “That’s a wrap for me & Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2! A big thank you to our amazing crew, cast, and outstanding stunt team. This has been the most action-packed fun I’ve ever had on a film! Can’t wait for you all to see it.” He also shared another photo when they resumed filming in November following the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The picture included Statham and his co-stars Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Adeline Rudolph, and CJ Bloomfield.

It remains to be seen how much the Johnny Cage character portrayed by Urban in the new Mortal Kombat film will deviate from his video game persona, as the franchise has experienced multiple reboots and character adaptations. While it’s not unusual for changes to occur in live-action or animated adaptations, the 2021 reboot caused quite a stir by altering the story significantly. For example, it introduced a new character, Tan, who wasn’t part of the franchise, while omitting one of MK’s iconic characters, Johnny Cage. The inclusion of Cage has generated anticipation for the sequel. Besides Urban, other newcomers joining the sequel cast include Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and Bloomfield as Baraka. Despite the changes made in the 2021 movie, it was successful, making the upcoming sequel a highly-anticipated watch.

Mortal Kombat 2 will hit theaters on October 24, 2025.
