Moss and Moss: Book II getting visual and gameplay upgrade for Meta Quest 3S

As a seasoned gamer with years of virtual reality escapades under my belt, I must say I’m thrilled about Polyarc’s decision to update Moss and Moss: Book II for Meta Quest 3S. The visual enhancements they’ve planned are nothing short of breathtaking, especially the improvements in water effects and book page animations. It’s like stepping into a beautifully illustrated storybook that comes alive before your eyes!

Developer Polyarc has unveiled plans for updated graphics and gameplay for both Moss and its sequel, Moss: Book II, specifically tailored for the Meta Quest 3.

Josh Stiksma, design director at Polyarc, shared that it’s thrilling to roll out the initial upgrade for Moss on Meta Quest since its debut. He emphasized that Moss has already established a high standard for visuals in VR headsets due to the dedicated work of his team during development. However, advancements in new hardware technology have presented an opportunity to further immerse players by refining the visual effects. Key areas will receive an upgraded visual pass, improving water quality, animating book pages, and highlighting high-quality effects and interactive visuals.

The video showcases an unboxing of the Quest 3S by Polyarc’s lead engineer, Brendan Walker, giving viewers a glimpse into the enhancements they can anticipate in each game regarding technical aspects.

To maximize the potential of the latest hardware, Moss – last updated since its debut on Quest 1 – will be displayed at 150% of its initial resolution. This enhancement enables Polyarc to correct the visuals and match the game’s appearance with its PC version. Additionally, lighting adjustments are planned for the game’s darker scenes, while numerous visual effects will undergo significant upgrades, such as more realistic water and animated book pages. These updates aim to align Moss with Moss: Book II, which originally launched on Quest 2 hardware.

This update offers a less intense gaming option for those preferring a calmer playstyle in Moss and Moss: Book II. Now, players have the freedom to skip or bypass combat entirely, or only certain sections if they so choose. The goal is to make the game more accessible and enjoyable for individuals who aren’t accustomed to combat or simply don’t enjoy it. With the release of Quest 3S, a new generation of VR players can now dive into their immersive storybook journey with Quill, experiencing a more relaxed, narrative-focused puzzle-platformer experience.

Stiksma stated, “We’ve always aimed for Moss players to find joy in discovering our vibrant universe and bonding with our characters. As a way to cater to new VR users who might not be keen on combat or the tension it brings, we created an option that allows them to bypass such elements if they wish. The response during internal testing has been incredibly positive.

Moss and Moss: Book II are out now for VR headsets.
