What many players love about open-world games is how beautiful they are to explore. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a prime example – its massive world is just as enjoyable to travel through as it is to battle within, and it looks even better on the Switch 2. But while it’s great to discover stunning, vibrant landscapes, it’s also incredibly satisfying to cause a little chaos and destruction.
If you love causing chaos and destruction, these open-world games are perfect for you. They let you battle endless waves of enemies and create massive explosions, satisfying that urge to wreck things. A big part of the enjoyment comes from constantly trying to top your own previous level of destruction.
Grand Theft Auto 5
Wanted Dead Or Alive
As a huge fan, I always say the Grand Theft Auto games basically invented the kind of crazy, free-roaming fun we see in open-world games today. And Grand Theft Auto 5 just took everything to the next level! The world felt so much bigger and more detailed, and being able to switch between three different characters whenever you wanted was a game-changer. It was incredible!
The classic Wanted system remains, letting players cause chaos by shooting, destroying vehicles, and evading the police. The online multiplayer is even more exhilarating, and players continue to enjoy playing with friends.
Just Cause 2
Grappling With Chaos
With Just Cause 2, the series really hit its stride, and later games have matched its incredible, over-the-top action. The game featured a huge, open world where you could destroy almost anything, drive various vehicles, use tons of weapons, and pull off amazing stunts—all while conveniently finding plenty of things to blow up.
Players will immediately be drawn into the game thanks to two core features. They can use a grappling hook to swing and glide, letting them quickly move around the environment. Even better, the hook can attach to almost anything – imagine pulling an enemy into a gas tank for a spectacular explosion! That’s just a taste of the creative and exciting possibilities.
Far Cry 6
Take Down Tyranny
Beginning with Far Cry 3, Ubisoft made the series more adventurous, and that was a positive change. While Far Cry 6 isn’t everyone’s favorite, it definitely provides some of the most over-the-top and creative ways to defeat enemies.
In this game, you’ll fight to overthrow a cruel government, capturing enemy bases and using explosions to reclaim your freedom. You can even team up with animal companions – imagine a crocodile fighting alongside you! It’s similar to Far Cry 6, but with a stronger political focus and a bit more grit, almost like a more mature version of Pokémon.
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Knock It Down
Many open-world games lack realistic environmental destruction. That’s where Red Faction: Guerrilla excels – almost anything you see, from vehicles to buildings, can be demolished, and the game wants you to do just that!
Whether players choose guns, explosives, or even a simple hammer, structures will crumble. While Mars isn’t the prettiest open-world environment, it’s definitely a blast to demolish everything in sight.
Borderlands 4
Guns, Guns, And More Guns
Borderlands 4 introduces a completely open world, offering a seamless experience throughout the entire game. As fans of the series would expect, it’s still packed with tons of guns!
Okay, so a lot of the guns feel like your standard rifles and pistols you’d find in Call of Duty, but honestly, most of them are totally crazy. We’re talking guns that explode, set enemies on fire, or even poison them – it’s wild! For me, the fun isn’t really about the story. It’s all about taking on quests, blasting enemies, and finding even more ridiculous guns. And Borderlands 4? It just nails that formula – it’s why I keep coming back for more.
Saints Row 4
Super-Powered Gangsters
The Saints Row games are similar to Grand Theft Auto, but even more over-the-top. Saints Row 4 really takes the craziness to the max! In this game, aliens invade Earth, and after breaking out of a virtual reality, you gain superpowers – all while being the President of the United States.
In Saints Row 4, you can move incredibly fast, freeze opponents, and use over-the-top weapons—even one that makes enemies’ heads comically large. If you’re looking for a game where you can run wild in a city, battle aliens, and have awesome superpowers, this is it.
Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster
West Is Back
Okay, so I’m playing Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, and it’s basically a revamped version of the original. You play as this photojournalist, Frank West, who ends up in Willamette, Colorado, right when a massive zombie outbreak kicks off. Instead of a relaxing vacation, I’m stuck trying to document the whole thing! My car breaks down, and I get trapped in a mall, and now it’s just me against endless waves of zombies, both inside and outside. It’s pretty intense!
Players can build weapons from everyday items – like attaching knives to boxing gloves or even using a lawnmower – to fight the zombies that invade the mall. It’s more comical than frightening, as the zombies move slowly and predictably, making them easy targets for whatever creative weapon the player comes up with.
Days Gone
The Most Disturbing Zombies In A Game To Date
Unlike Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, where zombies are less frightening, Days Gone features truly terrifying enemies. While you’ll often encounter small groups, the most dangerous areas are filled with massive hordes – sometimes over a hundred zombies attacking simultaneously, resembling swarms of ants.
Escaping from enemies is really challenging because you can’t easily defeat them without being overrun. Though the story isn’t as emotionally powerful as something like The Last of Us, Days Gone still delivers a genuinely scary and chaotic experience.
