Hollow Knight is a remarkably large and intricate Metroidvania game, filled with hidden secrets throughout its world, Hallownest.
That’s a big part of why those of us who play the game – myself included – often joke about getting hopelessly lost in Hallownest. There’s a real sense of joy when you finally stumble upon the map seller, and that feeling is totally genuine!
Team Cherry crafted a world that rewards careful exploration. Its best details aren’t immediately obvious – you’ll discover fascinating lore through small character quirks and unexpected, often funny, reactions.
The game feels incredibly detailed and immersive thanks to these subtle layers, though most players don’t even realize they’re there. Some of these hidden elements are so cleverly concealed that even experienced players who have mastered all the game’s challenges might not have discovered them.
We’re revisiting the game that helped shape an entire genre to share some of its most interesting hidden details! Whether you’re new to the game or a longtime fan, these secrets might give you a great reason to jump back into Hallownest and play again.
10. The False Knight’s Wall
An Early Exit for the Curious Ones

Okay, so as a Hollow Knight fan, I remember being totally freaked out by the False Knight when I first started playing! He looks like this huge, powerful warrior, and you think, ‘Oh man, this is going to be tough!’ But then you find out the craziest thing – he’s actually a tiny little parasite wearing stolen armor! It’s such a cool reveal, and it really stuck with me. He’s one of the first bosses, but he’s got some of the best lore, honestly.
It’s not a secret that this happens, as the game reveals it as you play. But there’s a small, interesting detail many players miss during that fight. When you first battle him, look to the left side of the arena when he slams the ground – you’ll notice cracks appearing on the wall.
Okay, so I figured out something kinda crazy in this game. If you just keep hitting this one wall, it breaks open and lets you escape the boss arena – you can literally just leave the boss for later! But here’s the thing: if you try to use that escape route again later, the boss actually repairs the wall! So you can’t run away twice, which is pretty clever, honestly.
9. Zote’s Special Main Menu
Some Singing to Lighten the Mood
Zote is a really irritating character in the game. He’s incredibly weak, but constantly boasts about being an amazing warrior, which is clearly not true.
There’s a hidden version of the game’s main menu dedicated to a specific person, but it’s tricky to unlock. Because of this, even players aiming for 100% completion often aren’t aware it’s there.
To access this special content, you’ll need to discover a secret room within Godhome where you can fight the Pantheons. Once inside, reach the highest level of the Hall of Gods, then use Crystal Dash to travel all the way to the right. Look above the third archway in the ceiling for a hidden entrance. This will take you to a battle against endless waves of miniature Zotes! Defeat at least 57 of them, and when you return to the main menu, you’ll find Zote there, performing the game’s theme song just for you.
8. An Unwelcome Smell
With Welcome Unique Reactions
Charms are crucial for helping the Knight win battles, but they can also subtly affect other characters in the game. The Defender’s Crest is one such charm with a hidden impact.
Despite being described as emitting a “heroic odor,” this charm actually releases a terrible, greenish gas that makes several characters complain about the awful smell.
This creates interesting situations with a couple of merchants. Leg Eater, found in the Fungal Wastes, surprisingly loves the smell and will give you a discount. However, Lemm in the City of Tears is completely repulsed and won’t speak to or trade with you until you remove the source of the odor.
7. The Secret Land of Storms
The Hardest Area to Reach
Unlocking this location is by far the hardest achievement in Hallownest. It demands completing all five Pantheons, and for each one, you need to have every binding active. Thankfully, you can do these challenges over time, but it’s still the most demanding task in the game.
Okay, so if you can actually do it – and honestly, it’s tough, and I hope you don’t lose yourself in the process – a weird crack will open up right in the middle of Godhome. It leads to this super unsettling place called the Land of Storms, which is just covered in the masks of all the Dreamers. It’s seriously creepy!
At the far end of this area, you’ll discover the Weathered Mask, a rare entry in the Hunter’s Journal. Its description reveals a poignant cry from the Godseekers: “Gods of Thunder, Gods of Rain! Why have you abandoned us? Will we be left to suffer in silence, our minds aching with loneliness? Is there any God left to save us from this terrible quiet?” It’s a fascinating bit of backstory!
6. No, It’s Not Raining
Yes, You’ve Been Fooled
Hollow Knight’s environments are full of subtle storytelling, and the City of Tears is a perfect example. It’s often described as a perpetually rain-soaked city, and it’s one of my favorites because of how well it conveys its history and atmosphere.
A lot of players have finished the game multiple times without noticing that it never actually rains in the city, and that’s because it can’t. The entire kingdom of Hallownest is located underground, making rain impossible.
The droplets you see falling aren’t rain – they’re actually water leaking from Blue Lake, which is positioned right above the city. You can easily check this on the world map! It’s always amusing to watch players discover this clever and unexpected detail that Team Cherry subtly included in the game.
5. No, It’s Not Snowing
Yes, You’ve Been Fooled Again
We’ve already confirmed that it doesn’t rain in Hallownest, so it wouldn’t make sense for it to snow either. Many players think the white flakes in Kingdom’s Edge are snow, but they’re actually looking at ash falling from the sky.
Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into the lore, and it’s wild! Apparently, the Pale King wasn’t always the little guy we see in the game. He used to be this huge, incredibly powerful being – a Wyrm, basically an ancient god! But he chose to give up his immortality and shrink down to a more manageable size so the bugs of Hallownest wouldn’t be totally intimidated by him. He wanted to be a ruler they could connect with, so he ditched his massive, godly form. It’s such a cool backstory!
Okay, so Kingdom’s Edge is seriously mind-blowing! Turns out, that place is where the Pale King shed his old, worm-like body. And the ‘snow’ covering everything? It’s not actually snow at all – it’s bits of his old body constantly falling down. Pretty wild, right?
4. Have Some Natural Lighting
The Light of the Underworld
It’s interesting to note that Hallownest is rarely lit by artificial lights – the only real exception being the lamps you find in Dirtmouth.
The underground kingdom isn’t lit by traditional light sources. Instead, the glow comes from the insects living there, plus details in the environment like flowers, spores, glowing ores, and even cracks in the ceiling. It’s a subtle effect, so many players haven’t even realized how it works!
If you’re skeptical, try hitting a lamppost anywhere in Hallownest with your nail. A small, white butterfly will appear – it’s actually what’s creating the light! But hitting the post will disturb it, and the butterfly will fly away, making the area much darker. That’s a really clever way to build the game’s world, in my opinion!
3. Destroying Something Repaired
A Heartbreaking Secret
Now that we’ve been discussing environmental destruction in Hollow Knight, it’s interesting to know there’s a hidden reward for giving in to the temptation to break every sign you see.

If you’ve ever gone back to a place you’ve damaged with your nails, you might have noticed the signs are mysteriously fixed. That’s thanks to the Menderbug, an insect dedicated to repairing that damage.
The chances of catching him are very slim – only about 2% – and it only happens in one place: the entrance to the Forgotten Crossroads, directly beneath Dirtmouth. If you’re quick, you can defeat him before he escapes. While experienced players are aware of his existence, it’s often missed that defeating him reveals his hidden home, which is in the same area where you first encountered the infected Sly.
Discovering his diary after entering his home, you learn he genuinely loved his work and found great joy in helping others. It makes you feel terrible – like a real villain – for disrupting the peaceful, happy life of such a kind, hardworking creature!
2. Delicate Flower’s Secrets
Unique Dialogues for a Fragile Gift
The Delicate Flower quest is notoriously difficult, challenging players to carefully transport a fragile flower across the game world without getting hit or using quick travel.
Although your primary objective is to find the Traitor’s Child’s grave (or the Godseeker, if you want to unlock a different ending), you can also give the flower to other characters to trigger special conversations and events.
If you give the flower to Elderbug in Dirtmouth, he’ll be really happy and even wear it! But if you give it to Nailmaster Oro, he’ll initially make fun of you for such a small gift. Here’s a fun detail though: if you leave his house and come back, you’ll find he’s secretly put the flower in a pot, suggesting he liked it more than he let on!
1. The Truth About The Collector
The Grubs’ Secret Savior?
As you play, you’ll eventually meet The Collector, a strange creature hiding in the Tower of Love in the City of Tears. You’ll quickly learn he’s the one who kidnapped the Grubs and trapped them in jars all over Hallownest, leading you to believe he’s the bad guy. However, the reality is surprisingly different!
In the world of Hollow Knight, when a dangerous plague called the Infection started spreading, the Pale King commanded that all moths and their larvae be destroyed, hoping to stop it. But the Collector secretly went against this order, preserving the larvae by trapping them in jars for safekeeping.
So, this guy was actually really thoughtful! He even drew up a map of where all the Grubs were – you can find it in his little hideout – so they wouldn’t wander off. And get this, if you hit him with the Dream Nail during the boss fight, you see his memories and realize he wasn’t trying to be a villain at all. He was just trying to protect the Grubs and keep them safe. It totally changes how you see him!
