Most Loved and Hated DC Movies

These are three DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films directed by Todd Phillips for “Joker” (2019), Patty Jenkins for “Wonder Woman 1984” (2020), and Zack Snyder for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016). Each film has its unique aspects, but they have varying levels of critical and audience reception.

It’s widely acknowledged that DC films have underperformed critically and financially compared to Marvel films. Consequently, certain DC movies have sparked intense debates among audiences, with some passionately praising them while others fiercely criticize. People’s preferences for comic book adaptations are diverse, and these films undeniably cater to varying tastes.

As we approach the July 11, 2025 release date of James Gunn’s new take on the DC Universe with “Superman,” it’s worth reflecting on the most divisive DC films throughout history. With a fresh start for the Man of Steel, let’s cross our fingers that this new beginning brings unity among fans and highlights the hopeful message that awaits in the bright future of DC movies.

5 Batman Forever (1995)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 41% | Audience Score: 32%

Most Loved and Hated DC Movies

  • Directed by: Joel Schumacher
  • Release Date: 14 July 1995

In the world of Batman films, “Batman Forever,” released without Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, faced an uphill battle to win over both audiences and critics. Directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Val Kilmer under the mask, this production opted for a more exaggerated, campy take on the Caped Crusader’s adventures. Given the gritty shift in tone that was sweeping through comic books at the time, this decision could have been questionable.

The movie focuses on Batman’s efforts to thwart the collaborative plans of Two-Face and the Riddler. Some fans are fond of this portrayal of Batman and call for a Schumacher version, while others disapprove of the comical villains and prefer to keep it on VHS with no more releases.

4 The Flash (2023)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 63% | Audience Score: 83%

Most Loved and Hated DC Movies
  • Directed by: Andy Muschietti
  • Release Date: 16 June 2023

After decades of behind-the-scenes difficulties, “The Flash” made its long-awaited debut on the big screen. However, there were some problem areas worth noting. For instance, Barry Allen’s character took a hit in public perception due to the numerous controversies surrounding Ezra Miller. Additionally, what was meant to be a standalone film for The Flash transformed into a chaotic multiverse event with questionable CGI appearances from DC’s legendary characters. Unfortunately, “The Flash” marks the end of an era for the DCEU on an unsatisfying note, with George Clooney taking the place of a more fitting conclusion.

The storyline of “The Flash” revolves around Barry Allen mastering his super-fast abilities, while dealing with the power to revisit the past and mend the wounds that shaped him. However, a minor modification in the timeline results in chaos, leading Barry and an out-of-retirement Batman, portrayed by Michael Keaton, to collaborate and thwart a Kryptonian invasion. This film seemed more like a Batman movie than a “Flash” one for some viewers, but others may appreciate this unexpected twist.

3 Joker (2019)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 69% | Audience Score: 89%

Most Loved and Hated DC Movies
  • Directed by: Todd Phillips
  • Release Date: 4 October 2019

Joker explores mental health and social class disparities in an unforgettable and ominous way, merging classic cinematic elements from films like Taxi Driver (1976) with comic book lore. This innovative approach appeals to both non-comic enthusiasts and devoted fans. However, some viewers may raise concerns over the film’s heavy themes and similarities to Scorsese’s works.

The Joker character in this portrayal undergoes a transformation from being Batman’s nemesis to an unremarkable comedian named Arthur Fleck residing in Gotham City. Through a series of events, which may include deaths that he comes to be associated with, Joker helps Arthur unearth his true identity.

2 Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 57% | Audience Score: 73%

Most Loved and Hated DC Movies
  • Directed by: Patty Jenkins
  • Release Date: 16 December 2020

In a refreshing shift for the DCEU, Wonder Woman brought a unique combination of thrilling action, profound themes, and amusing moments. This playful tone carries over to Wonder Woman 1984. In this installment, Diana Prince goes about her daily life in the chaotic 1980s while covertly helping those in distress as Wonder Woman. However, a powerful magical stone poses a major threat, with Cheetah and Maxwell Lord at its helm.

As a fan who appreciates a lighter tone and a dash of nostalgia, I found “Wonder Woman 1984” to be an enjoyable watch. However, some viewers might find it lacking due to its departure from the established backstory of Diana Prince in “Batman v Superman,” as well as its underdeveloped villains and an unwanted romance that feels forced and illogical.

1 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 29% | Audience Score: 63%

Most Loved and Hated DC Movies
  • Directed by: Zack Snyder
  • Release Date: 25 March 2016

Few comic book films have sparked as much controversy as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” This movie not only led to significant changes within the DCEU due to its complex and disjointed narrative, but it also released an extended version, Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition, to provide additional context. The film elicits intense affection from some viewers for its portrayal of a disillusioned Superman and Batman in a society that no longer supports them. Conversely, others vehemently dislike it.

As a gamer, I can say that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is commendable for tackling the complex questions of who Superman truly is and what the consequences would be if an individual wielded limitless power without being accountable to a nation. At the same time, I found myself breaking my own rule as Batman, feeling compelled to take lethal action against Superman, even at the risk of his potential descent into darkness.
