In the game Dark Souls, these enigmatic Non-Player Characters (NPCs) either aid the player on their quest or present challenges. They may bestow gifts, initiate pivotal occurrences, or share insights about the game’s setting and storyline.

1. Ingward

Keeper Of New Londo’s Seal

Location: New Londo Ruins, later in Firelink Shrine

In the ruins of New Londo, Ingward perches atop a building, clad in red robes and brandishing a Tin Banishment Catalyst. His words hint that he is the lone survivor among the trio of sorcerers from New Londo, who once undertook the mission to safeguard the seal, imprison the Four Kings, and ultimately flood their city.

There’s no sign that any other sorcerers from New Londo are still alive, and Ingward appears to be making amends for a troubled past by providing remedies for Curse afflictions. He also possesses the key to the seal sealing off the valley of New Londo, and following the defeat of the Four Kings, he relocates to the Firelink Shrine. Here, players can utilize his services, but they find him a mystery.

2. Shiva Of The East

Shiva belongs to the Forest Hunter faction, and he appears among members when gamers gain entry into this group. Few details are available regarding Shiva, except that he has a fondness for accumulating items and hails from an Eastern realm that is often spoken of in the Souls series.

Shiva maintains a friendly demeanor towards players and offers diverse, unusual weaponry when encountered in Blighttown. Despite his pleasant nature, his cryptic warnings about darker matters and fascination with mysterious weapons hint at a troubled past. He resorts to raw power if provoked, making him potentially lethal. Additionally, he’s accompanied by an invisible bodyguard, turning them into a tough duo to defeat in battle.

3. Marvelous Chester

A Sarcastic Mystery

Location: Royal Wood, invades the player in Oolacile Township

In the mesmerizing world of Dark Souls’ Artorias of the Abyss DLC, I stumbled upon Marvelous Chester – a character who shares my fate of being yanked back into the past by Manus, the Father of the Abyss. The nickname ‘Marvelous’ might hold a veil of sarcasm, considering he peddles an array of handy goods at prices that are anything but ordinary. In time, this enigmatic vendor even attempts to eliminate me in an invasive manner.

If players manage to overcome him in an invasion, he persists in offering merchandise albeit with a sullen demeanor. Known as Marvelous Chester, he’s quite chatty about the happenings around him, but when it comes to his own matters, there’s very little information available.

4. Domhnall Of Zena

Originating from an enigmatic ancient realm, scarcely documented on maps, I, a humble merchant named Domhnall, can be found nestled deep within the Depths, close to the entrance of Blighttown. I serve as a valuable resource for players, offering them crucial insights and knowledge that prove invaluable in their journey. The more souls you invest at my shop, the more information I reveal. However, when it comes to my own personal story, I remain an enigma wrapped in riddles.

This mysterious merchant stands out due to his collection of armor that resembles the bosses players have defeated, even offering Lord Gwyn’s armor which can only be found in NG+. Domhnall appears to have no allegiances other than himself, making him a friendly yet puzzling non-player character.

5. Oswald of Carim

A Pardoner Of Sins

Location: Undead Parish church bell tower

After the gargoyles have been vanquished and the bell tolls, Oswald from Carim emerges at the tower’s foot. He stands in an unusual manner and trades in matters concerning sinners and sin. His Purging Stones are available for just half the price that the female Undead Merchant quotes.

Oswald keeps his personal life private and instead focuses on helping others by forgiving sins (for a fee). He’s the unique character who offers Karmic Justice, a remarkable power that seems almost divine. If players inquire about other services, he demonstrates the “Well! What is it!” gesture at no cost, which is a fitting reaction for anyone puzzled about what else he has to offer.

6. The Giant Blacksmith

A Kind-Hearted Blacksmith

It’s surprising how much we don’t know about the Giant Blacksmith given how frequently players engage with him. He appears rather straightforward in his speech, using mostly one-syllable words. His backstory seems to be gradually revealed through conversation, suggesting that he was once a resident of Anor Londo before many of its inhabitants departed.

In the game Dark Souls, the Giant Blacksmith is exceptionally friendly among all non-player characters (NPCs). His kindness is so profound that it touches other NPCs’ hearts. In Dark Souls 3, you can find his remains in Anor Londo, and he holds the Giant’s Coal which you can give to Andre of Astora who expresses his longing for the deceased, saying, “I do miss the old fellow.

7. Quelana Of Izalith

The Last Surviving Daughter Of Chaos

Quelana from Izalith is famously recognized as the originator of pyromancy, having instructed the powerful pyromancer Salaman. You can encounter her in Blighttown and engage in a conversation with her, during which she’ll share her reasons for wanting to kill her mother and sisters, aiming to put an end to their suffering. It’s worth noting that before the Bed of Chaos transformed her family into demons, Quelana staged her own death.

Presently, Quelana hailing from Izalith is a living enigma, shrouded in more mystery surrounding her origins and convictions than the darkness and phantoms depicted in the game Dark Souls. Her influence extends beyond the initial game, as her distinctive pyromancy spells are discoverable in Dark Souls 3, represented by the Quelana Pyromancy Tome.

8. Darkstalker Kaathe

In simpler terms, Kaathe, resembling Darkstalker, emerges in the Abyss when you defeat the Four Kings. However, this encounter occurs only if you haven’t previously placed the Lordvessel. He is enveloped in darkness and trickery, much like an ancient serpent that offers a unique ending to the game. His speech is mysterious, and his form is that of a serpent, reflecting an old-world power. Compared to Kingseeker Frampt, Kaathe shares a similar enigmatic nature but pursues different objectives.

It remains unclear what truly drives Kaathe, as his intentions often seem enigmatic. This ambiguity leaves players speculating if his advice ultimately brings about positive transformation or catastrophe. The shadowy connection between him and the fall of New Londo casts a grim veil over his ultimate objective.

9. The Crestfallen Warrior

At the Firelink Shrine, the first Non-Player Character (NPC) you encounter is called The Crestfallen Warrior. Instead of providing helpful advice or items, he only offers gloomy remarks. However, after engaging in multiple conversations with him, he shares valuable insights about the world. It seems as though he’s temporarily withdrawn from the world, but his knowledge about it surpasses what one might expect for someone living apart.

In a world like this, it’s understandable why he might adopt a cynical and sarcastic demeanor. However, players find it puzzling as to why he behaves the way he does. Regrettably, as players progress through most of the game, the Crestfallen Warrior will shed his character and seem empty in the New Londo Ruins, attacking anything that moves.

10. The Undead Merchants

Great Merchants, Strange Souls

Location: (Male) Undead Burg, (Female) lower parts of Undead Burg

In this game, the most enigmatic and unassuming characters are the Male and Female Undead Merchants. These NPCs offer incredibly useful items without showing any fear in this frightening realm. Interestingly, if you assault a Male Undead Merchant, he responds with “‘You’ve lost your mind, haven’t you?’” before protecting himself using a Uchigatana. On the other hand, if you attack the Female Undead Merchant, she moves away to an area where she cannot be attacked and delivers a lengthy critique about how inept the player is.

In the Undead Burg, there resides a merchant, either male or female, who appears preoccupied with insanity. This merchant occasionally discusses a “little Yulia,” seemingly referring to an imaginary companion kept in a pot nearby. The female version of this character can be found in the lower sections of the Undead Burg, and despite her tendency to criticize players, little is known about her.
