Summary
- Bounties do not accurately reflect a pirate crew’s strength; false reputations can lead to overrating.
- Buggy’s Cross Guild, Bonney Pirates, and Krieg Pirates all showcase how strength and reputation can be misleading.
- The Fake Straw Hat Crew impersonated the real crew poorly, showing they lacked real skills and were easily overrated.
In the world of “One Piece”, several methods exist to evaluate a pirate crew’s worth or power. One commonly recognized method is a bounty, a sum of money that the World Government offers for capturing a criminal pirate. However, it’s crucial to understand that these bounties do not necessarily reflect a pirate crew’s actual strength. Instead, they represent an assessment of how dangerous certain pirates are perceived to be, and this evaluation may not always be based on accurate information.
In simpler terms, just like some pirate crews’ renown might not accurately reflect their true abilities due to misinformation, other related measures such as a crew’s overall standing can also be exaggerated or distorted. This suggests that certain pirate crews may be overhyped and, in reality, lack the strength they are often credited with.
Cross Guild
Weak Captain
- Captain: Buggy (Figurehead), Crocodile, and Dracule Mihawk (co-leaders)
The notorious Cross Guild, initially a naval-pursuit group, originated as a branch of Buggy’s Delivery, a militia-like guild endorsed by the government for mercenary work. Following Crocodile’s demand for repayment of funds used to establish Buggy’s Delivery, the Guild evolved into its current form. Due to misunderstandings, Buggy ended up leading it instead of paying off his debt. The Guild’s persistent targeting of marines has propelled Buggy to the rank of Yonko, making him one of the four most dangerous pirates recognized by the government, along with Luffy, Shanks, and Blackbeard.
One potential rephrasing: It’s questionable if Buggy truly deserves his high reputation, as he may be overvalued among pirates in the series. His association with the Roger Pirates and Shanks has given people an inflated perception of his power. During his alliances with characters like Luffy and Crocodile, particularly during their escape from Impel Down, this reputation attracted many dangerous criminals to join his crew and even led to his recruitment as a Shichibukai by the government following the Summit War.
To clarify, Buggy is not particularly strong, having been bested by one of the initial Straw Hat Pirate crews. His true character is widely known among his long-standing and prominent crew members. He’s often subjected to bullying from figures such as Crocodile and Mihawk in private. However, a misleading image of Buggy as a formidable threat has circulated, reaching both his followers and the government. This false impression might actually draw more prominent pirates towards him, alongside the already menacing influence of the Cross Guild.
Thriller Bark Pirates
Carried by a Devil Fruit
- Captain: Gecko Moria
The Thriller Bark Pirates are a group led by Gecko Moria, a pirate captain who, having achieved his goal of becoming pirate king but lost his previous crew, the Gecko Pirates, to Kaido, feels disillusioned with his pursuit. Consequently, his current crew consists primarily of zombies he lacks emotional ties to. Utilizing the Kage Kage no Mi, a Devil Fruit that allows him to rob graves and animate the living as zombies, Moria also possesses the power to exchange himself with his shadow and eliminate many individuals by swiping their shadows and subjecting them to sunlight, which disintegrates the shadowless.
As an avid fan, I must admit that the heart of our crew lies within the Kage Kage no Mi, a powerful Devil Fruit that empowers us greatly. Most of us, unfortunately, lose our unique abilities without it.
Dr. Hogback, one of our precious few remaining members, serves as our skilled surgeon but lacks any substantial combat skills. Absalom, with his Suke Suke no Mi, could become invisible, but sadly, he met his untimely end due to his Devil Fruit powers being coveted.
Perona, our sole combatant left, is quite formidable, yet her abilities also rely heavily on the Horo Horo no Mi – her chosen Devil Fruit. Moria, once a fearsome adversary, has weakened significantly after his initial defeat. His imposing powers now mainly stem from his Devil Fruit rather than any personal prowess he may have had.
Gecko Moria’s poor performance as a member of the Shichibukai led to his termination due to inefficiency. Following his removal, he was taken captive by the Blackbeard Pirates after declining their offer to join forces, but managed to break free. It remains uncertain whether he intends to address the shortcomings of his team or, most significantly, himself, going forward.
Bonney Pirates
Unearned Infamy
- Captain: Jewelry Bonney
The Pirate Crew known as the Bonney Pirates hail from South Blue’s Sorbet Kingdom. Their leader is Jewelry Bonney, a remarkably young captain, with most of her crewmates originally being fishermen. Despite this humble beginning, Bonney herself has risen to prominence and earned the title of Supernova – a prestigious recognition given to fledgling pirates who have amassed 9-digit bounties. This esteemed group also includes Marshall D. Teach, and they are collectively known as the Worst Generation.
Bonney, who is only 12 years old and the sole female pirate in her crew, has earned a formidable reputation on the high seas. However, her early career was marred by a minor issue: her crew targeted both children and the elderly. Although a pirate’s bounty isn’t solely determined by their ruthlessness, it seems to play a role, as evidenced by the Kid Pirates. Among the Supernovas, Kid had the highest bounty, and Killer, one of two non-captains with such distinction, also had a substantial bounty that qualified him for the Worst Generation. This might be because their crew was known for attacking civilians.
In the world of the Bonney Pirates, it’s a misunderstanding that they specifically target children and the elderly. The Devil Fruit Bonney possesses, Toshi Toshi no Mi, allows her to alter people’s ages. She often disguises herself as someone in their twenties, while her true age was only recently disclosed. Moreover, many of her enemies were probably weakened by her abilities rather than being from the ages she is rumored to have targeted. Although Bonney’s courage and past with the World Government would have made her a notable pirate anyway, the reputation that influenced her bounty seems to be somewhat misrepresentative.
Krieg Pirates
No Strength In Numbers
- Captain: Don Krieg
In the East Blue Saga, just before the final encounter, the Straw Hat Pirates went up against the Krieg Pirates, led by Don Krieg. Krieg’s tactic was to gather as many crew members as he could to increase his power, reaching a peak of about five thousand. However, a large portion of his fleet was defeated by Dracule Mihawk, who considered them not worthy of his time. Unlike other pirate crews often inflated in reputation, the Krieg Pirates seem to have been accurately evaluated. Don Krieg and Gin had bounties that matched their abilities, but apart from them and Pearl, most of the crew seemed to be noticeably weaker than even Patty and Carne, who are simply violent chefs at Baratie.
It’s uncertain if the deceased crew members from the Mihawk, numbering approximately 4,900, were particularly important, but it seems the high count may be misleading, possibly inflated to create an illusion that the Krieg Pirates are more powerful than they truly are. More recently, evidence suggests that the crew has relocated to Hachinosu, a territory controlled by the Blackbeard Pirates, indicating that they have managed to cross the Grand Line since their defeat at Baratie, implying they’ve grown stronger.
Fake Straw Hat Crew
Unmitigated Frauds
- Captain: Demalo Black
Over a span of two years, the Straw Hat Pirates went their separate ways to improve individually, but during this time, a motley crew of imitators emerged and claimed to be the new Straw Hat Pirates. Despite showing no resemblance in character or behavior to the original crew, they managed to deceive many people, even tricking Tony Tony Chopper, an authentic member of the Straw Hat Pirates, who encountered a false version of himself in the form of a wild fox that was not anthropomorphic.
The inexperienced and unskilled imposter crew, led by Demalo Black, who was only worth an 8-digit bounty before being caught and had a lower bounty than Arlong, managed to fool at least three other pirate crews into believing they were genuine. Despite this, the mightiest crew that joined their alliance, the Caribou Pirates, intended to covertly infiltrate them with the plan of eventually eliminating them.
As an avid fan, I can’t help but share an intriguing turn of events that unfolded shortly after our crew embarked on its journey. It seems our fake Robin, Cocoa, and Chopper counterpart, Nora Gitsune, were mysteriously apprehended by men in sleek black suits. The bulk of our imposter Straw Hats are rumored to have met a grim fate at the hands of the Caribou Pirates, though some survivors were later spotted behind bars, hinting at their miraculous survival.
Except for “Gashed” Albion, all the other pirates eager to join us found themselves in handcuffs, along with our apprehended crew members. Quite an unexpected twist, isn’t it?
From my perspective as a passionate fan of One Piece, let me just say that, for a fleeting instant, this band of inexperienced pirates was undeniably overhyped. You see, they audaciously attempted to mimic the legendary Straw Hat Pirates, and amazingly, they managed it – albeit briefly. It’s important to note that these impostors were previously detained in the G-4 prison. Remarkably, four of them even tried to pass off as the Kid Pirates, another crew rumored to be extinct. However, their resemblance to the Kid Pirates was as nonexistent as their likeness to the Straw Hat Pirates.
