Most Realistic Dialogue Systems In RPGs

Creating truly realistic conversations with characters in video games is incredibly difficult. There are just too many factors to consider. However, we’re hoping to see games with much smarter and more responsive AI characters in the future. This might happen sooner than we think – games like inZOI are already testing new technology that uses AI to generate thoughts and messages for characters, making them feel more unique and believable.

I’ve noticed that the games with the best conversations usually let you really define your character. They give you tons of choices – not just what you say, but how you say it, and even let you build a specific personality. It’s not a surprise that these games are often RPGs! You find all sorts of settings too – from dark, futuristic worlds to classic fantasy adventures where your character’s race, class, and moral choices really impact how the story unfolds through dialogue.

Mass Effect Trilogy

Paragon Or Renegade, Or Something Between

The Mass Effect series excels in dialogue because of the strong role-playing opportunities it offers players. Beyond the well-known Paragon and Renegade choices that define Commander Shepard’s personality, the game provides a wide range of other decisions to make as well.

What truly sets Mass Effect apart is its character development. Being able to create a main character that reflects your own personality makes the conversations feel incredibly real. As you make choices, you’ll unlock abilities like Charm and Intimidate, based on whether you lean towards being good or bad. However, you don’t have to pick just one – a mix of both feels natural and makes the whole system very believable.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Dialogue Is Affected By Race, Stats, Previous Choices, Class, Background, And More

Baldur’s Gate 3 understands that your character is more than just a simple ‘good,’ ‘bad,’ or ‘neutral’ type. The game remembers your decisions from the very beginning, even those made during character creation. This means two players – one who chose a Noble background and another who chose Sage – will encounter noticeably different conversation options depending on their past choices.

Your character’s class, abilities, and race significantly impact how you experience the game. For example, characters skilled in persuasion can often resolve situations peacefully, while stronger characters might rely on force. Certain races, like Drows, have advantages in specific areas, such as infiltrating the goblin camp. What’s really exciting is how your choices and companions throughout the story unlock even more unique dialogue options, making each playthrough and conversation feel fresh and personalized. This wealth of options is what truly sets each experience apart.

Planescape: Torment

Dialogue Is The Heart Of The Game

New players might feel like there’s a lot of talking in Planescape: Torment, but that’s actually what makes it so great. The game doesn’t spoon-feed you information; instead, important story details and developments are revealed through conversations. It definitely requires you to listen carefully, but it’s a remarkably well-designed system that uses dialogue to deliver crucial information and even impact your character’s journey.

Like many role-playing games, your character’s skills and abilities affect what you can say in conversations. This can open up new content and storylines. Unlike some games that heavily emphasize charm or persuasion, this game offers a wide variety of dialogue options based on all your stats. This makes conversations fun and replayable – similar to those ‘choose your own adventure’ books where every playthrough feels unique, and you’ll build different relationships with the characters you meet.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Earn Tags With Your Choices And Actions

Just like in Baldur’s Gate 3, your character’s background in Divinity: Original Sin 2 will appear in conversations. These background details can help you connect with other characters – for instance, a character with a Human background might be able to build rapport with other humans. You can also choose backgrounds that let you succeed in conversations without needing to pass skill checks.

Different characters will react to you based on who you are and what you do. For example, jesters might entertain some, while soldiers could earn the respect of paladins and captains. As you play, you’ll also unlock special tags based on your decisions – like being known as a hero or villain – and a few other surprises we won’t reveal. Just remember, every choice you make and everything you say matters.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Shape Your Personality

The conversation system in Dragon Age: Inquisition is similar to the one in BioWare’s Mass Effect games, but it doesn’t have the strict “good” and “bad” choices. You’ll have a lot of different ways to respond in conversations, ranging from friendly to aggressive. The more you consistently choose one type of response, the more unique options and outcomes will become available. And, staying true to BioWare’s style, you can definitely play as a rude or unpleasant character, complete with some funny lines of dialogue as you develop your character’s personality.

I’m really excited that, like in some of the other games we’ve been talking about, my character’s race and class will open up unique conversation choices. And it’s not just what I can say, but how I say it! There are perks, especially the Knowledge perks, that let me use my skills – whether it’s history, magic, or something else – to really influence the dialogue. It feels like it’ll add a lot to the roleplaying!

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

Plenty Of Talk, Plenty Of Lore, Plenty Of Options

Wrath of the Righteous offers a lot of story and dialogue, giving players plenty of choices in conversations – similar to games like Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3. What truly sets it apart, however, are its impactful Good and Bad dialogue options.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (WotR) uses the traditional Dungeons & Dragons alignment system, which really impacts your choices and how conversations play out. It’s rare to find a game that lets you fully embrace an evil character, so if you’re looking for a different kind of role-playing experience with meaningful choices, this game is worth checking out.

Disco Elysium

Harry’s Mind Is Yours To Shape

At the beginning of Disco Elysium, the main character, Harry, is a bit of a mystery, even to himself. As you play, solving the central mystery also means figuring out who Harry is and what kind of person he’ll become. Your political beliefs are key to this, influencing both what you say and what you can do. These beliefs aren’t just based on your choices, though – the thoughts you focus on and ‘internalize’ also play a significant role in shaping Harry’s identity.

Throughout the game, you’ll be presented with new ideas that you can choose to accept or reject, and these choices can unlock unique conversations. For instance, exploring the ‘Homo-Sexual Underground’ thought will allow you to discuss sexuality with your partner, Kim. Ultimately, all your decisions will shape your detective’s personality and reveal your political beliefs. This game strives for a level of realism and relevance rarely seen in this genre.

Fallout: New Vegas

The Wasteland Reacts To Who You Are

A big reason why Fallout: New Vegas is so popular with fans is that your character’s skills and stats genuinely impact how people in the game world respond to you. It’s not just about what you say in conversations, but who your character is that shapes those interactions.

While a high Sneak skill is great for stealth, it can also help you convince people you’re capable of avoiding detection. Conversely, low Intelligence has a noticeable effect on conversations – your character will say things that clearly show a lack of smarts, fitting the darkly humorous tone of New Vegas. The game encourages you to think about all of your character’s skills when talking to others, not just their Speech ability, which makes the interactions feel incredibly realistic.
