Summary
- Novocaine delivers intense action with brutal injuries and horrific kills, surpassing Love Hurts and Heart Eyes.
- The plot unfolds as bank robbers, a heroic detective, and a lead character named Nathan face intense sequences.
- Ben’s gruesome death involving a gun from a deep fryer and Simon’s unique demise with a bone through his throat stand out.
This year has seen a variety of intense action films, such as “Love Hurts,” and graphic horror movies like “Heart Eyes.” The film “Novocaine” adds to this list with scenes so brutal that viewers might need to look away. While both “Love Hurts” and “Heart Eyes” contain gruesome deaths, “Novocaine” showcases some truly shocking injuries.
The reason for this is that the main character, Nathan Caine, suffers from a condition where he can’t experience pain. In the movie Novocaine, he endures numerous injuries and wounds, far too many to mention all of them.
WARNING! Spoilers ahead!
5. Nigel
Don’t Be A Hero

At the workplace where Nathan is employed, Nigel serves as the bank manager. He appears to be an adequate supervisor, but a critical situation arises during Christmas when armed robbers disguised as Santas invade the bank. They forcefully demand that Nigel disclose the bank’s code. Despite having a gun pointed at him, Nigel remains steadfast and declines to comply with their demands.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: During a bank heist, you should never attempt to be a hero because it could lead to unnecessary harm. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way when I unintentionally caught a glimpse of one of the robbers’ faces, which prompted them to take drastic action and shoot me. The gunshot was deafening, and the aftermath was gruesome, with blood splattering everywhere, leaving a chilling image etched in my mind. When it was Sherry’s turn, she found herself faced with an unbearable threat. Overwhelmed by fear, Nathan reluctantly gave in and opened the vault.
4. Detective Duffy
Too Good For This World

In the bank robbery case at hand, Detective Duffy and Detective Langston are the key investigators. While Duffy exhibits a more relaxed demeanor, he consistently supports his partner throughout the film. A pivotal scene showcases Duffy’s valiant act as he rescues Sherry and Nathan from Simon, mistakenly believing he had killed him. Regrettably, Duffy’s bullet did not end Simon’s life, and in retaliation, Simon targets Duffy with a gunshot to the neck.
It’s surprising that no one inspected Simon’s body after Duffy shot him, as this could have prevented what followed. There was indeed time for such an action since an ambulance had arrived to attend to Nathan. Although it may not be as gruesome as Nigel’s injury, it’s still shocking and saddening given that Duffy had just saved the day. However, Duffy’s death seemed to inspire Langston to bend the rules in order to help Roscoe and Sherry save Nathan, following Simon’s escape.
3. Ben
From Fryer With Love

In the scenario, one of the bank robbers, identified as Ben, finds himself trapped in a narrow alleyway after being pursued by Nathan, who had taken control of a police car. A high-speed chase unfolds within the confines of the alleyway, followed by an intense altercation in a nearby kitchen. It’s important to note that Nathan is inexperienced in combat, having never been in a fight prior to this incident. Despite his good intentions to extract information from Ben in order to save Sherry, he severely underestimates the situation at hand.
Ben isn’t just an unlucky crook; he’s a former solider who resorted to bank robbery, showing no remorse for his actions. In a struggle, Nathan seizes a gun from a deep fryer, burning himself like transforming into Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series. However, Nathan didn’t intend to shoot him; it was an accident and the bullet struck Ben, who was covered in flour at the time. To make matters worse, Nathan vomits on his lifeless body, adding a sickening final touch.
2. Andre
That’s Some Headlock

During the altercation at Ben’s house, despite ultimately meeting a tragic end, I didn’t experience as much harm as Nathan did initially. You see, Ben is my brother, and Nathan had gone there seeking information about Sherry. Unfortunately, the house was rigged with traps similar to those from a modern adaptation of “Home Alone,” causing Nathan to sustain multiple injuries before I arrived chasing after Ben.
In this scenario, Andre initially restrains Nathan and inflicts agony on him by manipulating an arrow wound in his leg, subsequently yanking out Nathan’s fingernails. Luckily for Nathan, Roscoe intervenes, allowing him to retaliate. The battle concludes when Nathan pins Andre between his knees. In a shocking turn of events, Nathan thrusts the arrow deeper into his own leg, fatally penetrating Andre’s head and exiting through the other leg. This marks the first death in the movie that does not involve firearms, and it is undoubtedly a dark and grisly scene.
1. Simon
Bad To The Bone

In his role as the chief of the Santa gang of criminals, it’s only fitting that Simon met an unusually grisly end. Unlike the other two bank robbers, Simon was particularly tense and took pleasure in causing harm. His abilities were also superior, turning each effort by Nathan to harm him into a jest. He even managed to fracture Nathan’s arm, making the bone visibly snap, before chasing after his sister Sherry.
In a dramatic turn of events, as Simon’s life hangs in the balance, Nathan reappears to be the hero. So, how does Nathan ultimately dispose of Simon? By impaling him with the splintered bone from his own broken arm – a move reminiscent of Wolverine’s combat techniques when he still possessed claws made of bone. This is indeed an unconventional method of murder in an action flick, and this time around Nathan managed to pull it off without losing his lunch.
