As someone who has been a long-time fan of Vocaloid music and Hatsune Miku in particular, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing. Growing up, I remember spending countless hours listening to Miku’s unique voice and captivating songs, so seeing her get a movie adaptation is truly exciting.

Title announcement for the movie: “Vibrant Cinema! The Movie: A Silent Miku

Based on the title, it appears that throughout the storyline, Miku’s voice and melodies fail to resonate with others. To create a captivating narrative, the script may leverage the fact that Vocaloid characters possess synthetic voices, making their singing and speaking sound artificial, as a plot device.

The new trailer makes it more understandable: Miku and other Vocaloid characters seem to be expressing themselves through the Vocaloid software, whereas human characters are voiced by actual actors. If the storyline continues in this manner, it promises to be entertaining as it conveys a message that even a voice synthesizer software can sing. Do check out the trailer!

Colorful Stage the Movie main staff

Studio P.A. Works (formerly known as “Buddy Daddys”) is in charge of the animation for this upcoming film. Directing the project is Hiroyuki Hata, who has previously worked on several seasons or OVAs of Yuru Yuri.

Yoko Yonaiyama oversees the scriptwriting, boasting a collection of works such as “Ya Boy Kongming!” and “Umamusume: Pretty Derby” in her repertoire. These series have received considerable acclaim despite remaining relatively unnoticed by some audiences. Meanwhile, Satoshi Hono (of “Aggressive Retsuko”) is responsible for the music composition.

The Project Sekai Franchise

Project Sekai is a rhythm game that debuted in 2020 for mobile devices in Japan and went global in 2021. Unlike the movie where Miku enters the real world, it’s Ichika who gets transported to an alternate reality in this game. Most of the main characters (excluding Vocaloid characters whose voices are generated by software) reprise their original roles.

It seems quite probable that Crypton Media Future is considering producing additional anime to expand their franchise, but this hinges on how well their current movie performs in Japan and overseas markets. They have been focusing more on promoting Hatsune Miku internationally, even partnering with significant franchises like Pokémon and Fortnite to reach a broader audience. It’s possible that she might be busy performing at Coachella again.
