MSFS 2024: Sim Rate Guide (Fast-forwarding Time)

As a seasoned aviator who’s clocked countless hours in the friendly skies of MSFS 2024, I can wholeheartedly vouch for the joy of soaring through the digital heavens. However, the monotony of long-haul flights has always been a bit of a drag – until now! This guide has shown me the secret to skipping ahead to the sweet taste of landing, and I can’t help but share it with fellow flight enthusiasts.

Gazing out of the airplane window in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 can be enjoyable, but it loses its charm during lengthy flights. That’s when you find yourself staring at the same view for hours, wishing you could jump ahead to landing. Luckily, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 offers a way to speed up time, and this guide will walk you through the process step by step.

In the latest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, the shortcuts you previously used such as “R + CTRL” to fast-forward time will no longer function.

How to Speed Up Time in MSFS 2024

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Open the Controls tab.
  3. Search for “Sim Rate.”
  4. Assign Sim Rate to a key bind such as “ALT + R.”
  5. Assign other keys to increase and decrease the Sim Rate.
  6. Press the assigned key binds during a flight to speed up or slow down time.

In their current state, neither the Xbox nor PC editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 come with the Sim Rate function already assigned to any keys. To utilize this feature, you’ll first need to adjust your keybindings.

In the Xbox settings for key bindings, when you pick “Sim Rate”, a prompt saying ‘Scanning’ will show up. After this message appears, go ahead and press the buttons you wish to assign for the Simulation Rate function. Remember to select keys that won’t clash with managing your aircraft during flight.

How to Use Sim Rate as a Fast-Travel Feature

  1. Assign a key to the Sim Rate feature.
  2. During the flight, activate MSFS 2024’s autopilot mode.
  3. Set the autopilot to the NAV mode.
  4. Speed up time to reach destination faster like a fast-travel feature.

As MSFS 2024 lacks a quick-travel feature, you’ll need to find an alternative solution. One possible workaround is to utilize the aircraft’s NAV mode on autopilot, enabling it to follow your predefined flight path at the speed and altitude you specify. This method is particularly useful for lengthy flights, as it can significantly simplify the process of accumulating Credits.

Things to Know About Sim Rate in MSFS 2024

Before using the Sim Rate feature in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, keep these points in mind:

  • There’s no EXP penalty for using the Sim Rate. Unlike skipping parts of a flight, fast-forwarding time doesn’t affect the Experience Points you earn from a mission.
  • Speeding up time during Career Mode missions can be risky. At higher speeds, you’ll have less time to react to flight incidents. Failing to respond quickly may cause a crash, resulting in significant losses to your business. Use this feature in the Career Modecarefully and only when you’re confident the flight route is safe.
  • There’s no on-screen indicator for speed. One downside of using the Sim Rate is that you won’t know how fast time is passing. As a general rule, pressing the Sim Rate Increase button four times will reach maximum speed. To return to normal speed, press the Sim Rate Decrease button the same number of times you increased it.
  • Speeding up time can cause frame rate drops. If you’re already facing performance issues in MSFS 2024, avoid using the Sim Rate feature unless necessary, as it can lead to crashes.
