MTG x Spider-Man Crossover Lacks Commander Decks

Summary

  • Spider-Man set for Magic: The Gathering won’t include Commander Decks.
  • Fans surprised at lack of Spider-Man decks.
  • Players must create their own Spider-Man-themed decks in 2025.

Fresh insights have surfaced concerning the forthcoming collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Marvel’s Spider-Man, disclosing an unexpected omission – the absence of one of the game’s most favored deck categories.

Essentially, Magic: The Gathering is mainly focused on obtaining scarce cards from Booster packs and swapping them with other gamers. Additionally, there are offerings available which include fully assembled decks, such as the dual Starter Decks that enable two individuals to start playing the game right away.

Among the top-selling items are Commander Decks, each centered around a potent character. These have grown more frequent with the collaboration products for Magic: The Gathering, like the forthcoming Final Fantasy collection, which will include four Commander decks.

2025 marks the year when Magic: The Gathering introduces a collection centered on the Marvel superhero, Spider-Man. As per MTG Rocks, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks disclosed during a shareholders meeting that this Spider-Man series won’t include Commander Decks.

Spider-Man Won’t Appear In Any Commander Decks

As per Cocks, the rationale behind the choice was, “We believe Spider-Man will perform well. What sets Spider-Man apart is that its composition differs slightly from other sets we have.

He added, “Final Fantasy and The Lord of the Rings previously featured Commander decks, which account for a substantial portion of a set’s size. However, Spider-Man will only have cards suitable for the Standard format. Consequently, there won’t be any preconstructed decks, resulting in a slightly smaller set.

I find it incredibly surprising that we won’t see Spider-Man as a Commander deck option. It seems like an opportunity that would generate significant profits given the popularity of characters such as Spider-Man, Venom, the Sinister Six, and Spider-Gwen, all of whom seem perfectly suited for the Commander role.

2025 marks the arrival of the Spider-Man crossover for Magic: The Gathering, and fans will need to create their own web-slinging decks since no preconstructed decks (pre-cons) will be available to assist them.
