Mufasa Officially Loses The Box Office Battle To Sonic 3

Summary

  • Mufasa: The Lion King opened below expectations.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog outpaced Mufasa at the box office.
  • Both films approached the box office with successful predecessors.

As a lifelong movie enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic juggernauts, I must say that this latest round of box office face-offs leaves me with a mix of amusement and a tad of melancholy. On one hand, it’s always thrilling to see new adaptations hit the big screen, especially when they are based on such beloved properties as Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog. However, the stark contrast in their opening weekend performances has left me a bit bewildered.

The original version of “The Lion King,” which was a precursor to Disney’s 2019 live-action remake, was expected to compete with Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” for box office dominance in December. However, instead of surpassing the success of the speedy hedgehog, this photorealistic animation fell short and couldn’t match the commercial enchantment of its original counterpart.

Both “The Lion King (2019)” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” had strong beginnings due to their successful predecessors. The remake of “The Lion King” wrapped up its cinema run in 2019 as one of the top ten highest-grossing films ever, earning an impressive $1.66 billion at the box office. In keeping with Hollywood trends, a sequel was announced, but instead of revisiting “The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride,” it would delve into Mufasa’s story before his reign over the Pridelands. The first two “Sonic the Hedgehog” movies shattered records for video game adaptations and the addition of Keanu Reeves to voice the villain, Shadow, in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” further fueled anticipation. Consequently, these animated releases were set to be this year’s cinematic equivalent of a blend between “Wicked” and “Gladiator II.

Mufasa: The Lion King Opened Below Expectations

Sonic the Hedgehog Outpaced Mufasa: The Lion King at the Box Office

The initial predictions for “Mufasa: The Lion King” suggested it could earn up to $50 million during its opening weekend. However, as reported by Box Office Mojo, the animated film by Barry Jenkins earned $35 million across 4,100 screens in North America and $87.2 million internationally, totaling $122.2 million globally. This is significantly lower than the impressive debut of its predecessor, Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King,” which made $191.8 million domestically, $254 million internationally, and a staggering $446 million worldwide during its opening weekend. By the end of the December 20-22 weekend, “Mufasa: The Lion King” ended up trailing behind its rival “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” in the US box office charts. “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” earned a solid $60 million during its opening weekend in North America, slightly surpassing the $58 million of the original “Sonic the Hedgehog” but falling short of the $72 million made by “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

It’s worth mentioning that unlike “The Lion King” remake from 2019, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” surpassed its initial predictions of earning $55 million upon release. Despite a pending global launch, experts anticipate it will perform just as well. The underperformance of “The Lion King” remake is not entirely unexpected, given that its impressive animation technology, Beyoncé’s star power, and nostalgia likely accounted for much of its box office success. Once audiences had seen enough, however, they were less inclined to return, even for a new take on the story. And the film’s lukewarm reviews seem to confirm this trend.

Despite initial concerns, “Mufasa: The Lion King” is unlikely to be a box office bomb. Much like “The Lion King” in 2019, international audiences have shown a keen interest in Disney remakes, suggesting that this prequel will fare better overseas than domestically. Additionally, a large audience turnout during the Christmas season is almost expected. However, with an estimated production and marketing budget of around $300 million, Disney would struggle to achieve the 2x multiplier needed to make the movie profitable. On the other hand, Paramount has no doubts about “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” being a lucrative venture. In fact, they have already approved Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and debuted a Knuckles spin-off series in July.

Mufasa: The Lion King was released on December 20 and is currently showing in theaters worldwide.
