Multiplayer-Focused Pokemon Game Seemingly Leaks Online

Key Takeaways

  • Game Freak, the main developer behind Pokemon games, has been impacted by a major leak.
  • A multiplayer Pokemon game may be in development.
  • Details of the upcoming Pokemon Gen 10 named “Gaia” for Switch 1 and 2 have also been leaked.

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the evolution of the beloved creatures we call Pokémon, this news has me both excited and cautiously optimistic. The magnitude of this leak is unprecedented, with hints at a multiplayer Pokémon game that seems to be inspired by Splatoon – now, isn’t it about time we caught ’em all together?

A significant data breach hints at an upcoming multiplayer Pokemon game. Lately, Pokemon Company has been dealing with a string of small leaks, such as speculative Generation 10 details. But this latest leak, dubbed “Teraleak,” specifically concerns Game Freak – one of the key development studios within Pokemon Company – and is already being labeled as the biggest Pokemon leak so far.

Game Freak, a prominent Japanese developer, has created the majority of the main Pokémon games, such as Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet, and the upcoming title Z–A (known as Pokémon Legends). Both Game Freak and ILCA, another renowned Japanese studio known for creating Pokémon Home, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl, have been affected by a recent data leak. The files from this leak hint at a collaboration between the two companies on an upcoming, potentially thrilling new Pokémon game.

On October 12, approximately 7 PM (Pacific Time), information about a fresh Pokemon game surfaced online. Initially, it was speculated that the project, then rumored to be codenamed Synapse, would be a massive multiplayer game. However, within a few hours, Centro LEAKS on Twitter, the primary source of these leaks, corrected this information, stating that the circulated screenshots were incorrect and that the game wouldn’t actually be an MMO. What has been confirmed, however, is that the gameplay seems to be similar to Splatoon, although the precise details of this resemblance are yet to be clarified. This surprising news emerged just a few days after hackers hinted at the starter Pokemon for Pokemon Legends: Z–A, reigniting conversations within the Pokemon community.

Game Freak Has Not Responded to Pokemon Leaks

The leaks also reveal information on the upcoming Pokemon generation, tentatively named “Gaia,” which is rumored to be compatible with both Switch 1 and Switch 2 consoles. Although the leakers are still sorting through and examining the vast amount of data, they have already released various beta and abandoned Pokemon designs, as well as map editors, theme songs, and even old game concepts from past Pokemon series. So far, Game Freak has not addressed these revelations.

On October 10th, just a few days prior to the unauthorized leak of the new Pokemon game, Game Freak issued an apology on their official website for a hack that had occurred in August 2024. This incident resulted in the exposure of personal information belonging to more than 2,000 employees, such as phone numbers and email addresses. Game Freak has confirmed that it has contacted those affected. Interestingly, the press release did not disclose any details about the leaked game titles, data, or files. Currently, Game Freak is actively expanding its workforce, but it’s unclear if this security breach will influence the company’s future plans with The Pokemon Company or affect their development process.
