MultiVersus Officially Shuts Down

Summary

  • MultiVersus officially shuts down its online servers today at 9:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM ET.
  • Those who have logged into the game at any time after February 4 will still be able to play MultiVersus offline.
  • The title cost Warner Bros an estimated $200 million.

Today marks the closure of MultiVersus, a decision made public in January. Their online servers will be turned off at 9:00 AM Pacific Time / 12:00 PM Eastern Time. The fifth season was their last, and recently they introduced DC’s Aquaman and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes to their already rich and varied collection of iconic characters hailing from various media platforms.

Following persistent speculation about its future online, it became official in January that MultiVersus would cease operation in May 2025. Despite garnering a dedicated fanbase during its short lifespan, the live-service model’s inherent risk and shifting player preferences have led many to abandon it. Warner Bros, who purchased developer Player First Games in July 2024 after recognizing MultiVersus’ potential, reported that the game cost the company approximately $200 million. This setback comes on the heels of the troubled launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, another blow to WB.

It’s a disheartening moment for fans of MultiVersus, as the game will be turned off permanently at 9 AM Pacific Time / 12 PM Eastern Time. During this time, the game will also disappear from the PlayStation Store, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and Steam. Players are encouraged to use any remaining Gleamium currency before the game is removed, as they won’t be able to do so afterwards. If you have logged into MultiVersus after February 4, you can still play the game offline. The community has expressed disappointment over the shutdown of MultiVersus, especially those who bought the $99.99 Founder’s Pass, as they are unable to fully utilize all the currency provided in the exclusive package.

MultiVersus Shut Down Date and Time

  • May 30 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET

In July 2022, MultiVersus was released and initially attracted a large number of players on Steam, with more than 150,000 playing the quirky fighting game simultaneously. However, these high numbers didn’t persist, and the game was closed down for almost a year before re-emerging at the end of May 2024. Even then, its player count remained reasonable, but it soon lost steam. After announcing that MultiVersus would be shutting down permanently, co-founder of developer Player First Games, Tony Huynh, expressed his apologies to the game’s fans.

Following the release of Season 5 in February, there was a surge of enthusiasm among MultiVersus players, who were now keen on preserving the game. The latest significant update brought about numerous modifications, such as accelerated gameplay speed and adjustments to movement, aspects that fans had frequently asked for. Despite a large number of supporters signing a petition to prevent its cancellation, it appears these attempts fell short.
