MultiVersus Roster is Leaving One Character Type in the Dust

As a passionate gamer who’s been around the block a few times, I must admit, MultiVersus has certainly piqued my interest ever since its unveiling last year. The idea of a platform fighter featuring some of Warner Bros.’ most iconic characters was nothing short of intriguing.

Initially when MultiVersus was unveiled as far back as November 2021, it appeared to be an intriguing idea. Although Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had already set a high standard for platform fighters, MultiVersus seemed capable of challenging it. This is because Warner Bros., which houses some powerful intellectual properties, holds a significant advantage in a game primarily based on crossovers.

The initial lineup for MultiVersus was quite impressive, featuring DC legends, beloved Looney Tunes characters, fan-favorites from Cartoon Network, and a few unexpected additions. Since its comeback this year, MultiVersus has expanded its roster even further, introducing much-anticipated Warner Bros. characters such as the Joker, Jason Voorhees, Agent Smith, Beetlejuice, Samurai Jack, and the Powerpuff Girls. However, among all these fantastic fighters, one character seems to stick out like a conspicuous sore thumb.

MultiVersus Seems To Have Forgotten About One Type of Fighter

There’s Only One Original Character in MultiVersus

Initially when MultiVersus debuted its public beta testing phase, it introduced an original character named Reindog. As stated on the MultiVersus website, this character is a Royal Guardian hailing from his planet Zanifeer. In combat, Reindog utilizes a potent gem to bestow him with unique supportive skills.

In the world of MultiVersus, Reindog’s backstory isn’t particularly strong compared to other characters due to a lack of detailed information at this point. Combined with their visually generic design and moveset, Reindog tends to blend into the background among the game’s well-known pop culture icons. As of now, Reindog remains the sole original character in MultiVersus, and it appears that no new original characters are planned for the near future.

MultiVersus Might Be Right to Avoid Original Characters

Although Reindog may seem odd in the lineup of characters for MultiVersus, it appears that Player First Games is making a wise choice by not introducing any more original characters into the game. MultiVersus has always positioned itself as a primary crossover fighter, and it’s only logical that fans would prefer to see established characters join the game rather than new ones. If MultiVersus aims to stay competitive with games like Super Smash Bros. and Brawlhalla, it must meet these fan expectations.

Based on SteamDB data, the game MultiVersus reached its highest number of simultaneous players within a 24-hour period at only 1,741, a significant drop compared to its all-time peak of 153,433 players in July 2022. David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, has recently acknowledged that MultiVersus has fallen short of expectations, resulting in an estimated $100 million loss for the company’s overall revenue.

Simultaneously, the internet was abuzz with this information, and MultiVersus unveiled its upcoming content for Season 4. In the platform-fighter game, we’ll soon see the addition of Marceline from Adventure Time and Raven from Teen Titans, characters that fans have been eagerly anticipating since the game’s debut. Given MultiVersus’ apparent underperformance, it seems strategically wise for Player First to prioritize introducing long-requested fighters over original characters like Reindog in future updates.
