As a long-time fan of animated series that captivate my heart and tickle my funny bone, I’ve been eagerly following the developments of MultiVersus, a platform fighter that brings together some of the most iconic characters from pop culture. The recent addition of Over the Garden Wall to the game’s roster as a potential stage has me all a-twitter!
In a game like MultiVersus, which is unique due to its fusion of popular culture icons, the diversity of its character roster plays a crucial role. Initially, the beta version boasted a strong lineup, offering characters from various Warner Bros. intellectual properties. However, since its re-release in May, the roster has expanded even further, welcoming figures such as Beetlejuice, Agent Smith, Jason Voorhees, Samurai Jack, and more recently, Marceline from Adventure Time, to the ongoing battle.
There have been indications that the roster for the game MultiVersus is not yet complete. Back in November, a leaker named NotAusilMV (who has since been suspended from Twitter) shared what appeared to be a sneak peek of one of the upcoming stages in MultiVersus. This stage showed a river boat full of frog passengers amidst an autumnal landscape, which was immediately recognized by fans of the animated miniseries Over the Garden Wall as referencing the series’ sixth episode. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, it would be exciting if there were to be an Over the Garden Wall stage in MultiVersus. However, opinions are divided on whether or not characters from Over the Garden Wall might also join the game as playable fighters.
The Argument For Over the Garden Wall Characters in MultiVersus
Over the Garden Wall’s Cast Could Lead to Some Fun Fighter Abilities
Regardless of its brief 10-episode run, Over the Garden Wall boasts a rich tapestry of vibrant characters, several of whom could potentially join the roster of a game like MultiVersus. While the standout choice for a character from this series in MultiVersus might be the central hero Wirt (voiced by Elijah Wood), it’s worth considering his little brother Greg as a companion, with them teaming up to fight together like the recently introduced Powerpuff Girls, who alternate in combat.
In addition to their regular companions, Wirt and Greg might summon their faithful allies through their unique abilities. For example, Wirt may summon Beatrice, now transformed into a bluebird, to dive bomb an adversary, while Greg could hurl his trusted frog sidekick at enemies to push them back. The moves of both characters could incorporate references to some of the miniseries’ most iconic moments and phrases, like Greg taunting an enemy with a “Rock Fact.
Over the Garden Wall Deserves More Recognition
One compelling reason for adding characters from the miniseries “Over the Garden Wall” to “MultiVersus” is that it would significantly boost its recognition, a fact that seems fitting given its heartwarming, intricate, humorous, endearing, and atmospheric nature. Although the series has been gradually gaining popularity with older audiences since its debut in 2014, it remains relatively obscure compared to other productions. A spot in “MultiVersus” could help bring the attention that “Over the Garden Wall” truly deserves.
The Argument Against Over the Garden Wall Characters in MultiVersus
Over the Garden Wall Is Not an Action-Oriented Series
However, one significant point of contention for not including Over the Garden Wall in MultiVersus lies in its minimal action scenes compared to other shows featured. Despite the abundance of children’s cartoon characters in MultiVersus, they mostly hail from series that incorporate some level of action. Shows like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, and even Tom and Jerry all showcase physical altercations. Even Scooby-Doo, known for its comedic elements, includes short bursts of slapstick violence and frequent chase sequences.
In contrast to many other shows, Over the Garden Wall is not action-packed. Even though it includes frightening creatures and typical perils of fairy tales, most conflicts in Over the Garden Wall are resolved through non-violent methods or reveal that the supposed antagonists are not truly evil.
It could feel somewhat discordant and inaccurate to the original story if characters such as Wirt and Greg were unexpectedly placed in a fighting game like MultiVersus, where they’d encounter opponents like Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees or The Matrix’s Agent Smith.
