Must-See TotK Characters Hyrule Warriors: AoI Needs to Feature!

During the Nintendo Switch 2-focused Direct event held on April 2, 2025, one of the titles announced was Hyrule Warriors: Era of Captivity, a musou-style game set in ancient Hyrule’s history. This game follows Princess Zelda after her journey to the era of the Zonai during the events of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While Era of Captivity is expected to primarily focus on characters from the past, such as King Rauru, Queen Sonia, and the original Sages, it will also feature contemporary characters, including the modern Sages and undoubtedly Link himself.

The Modern Sages Previously Time Traveled In Age Of Calamity

In essence, “Age of Imprisonment” can be seen as a continuation of sorts to “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity”. This game delves into the events that unfolded a century prior to the cataclysm depicted in “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”. In

In contrast to just recounting past events, “Age of Calamity” offered a unique twist. Four individuals, each associated with the original Champions – the Gerudo leader Riju, the Rito warrior Teba, youthful Goron Yunobo, and Mipha’s brother Sidon – journeyed back in time to prevent the Champions from being defeated. Tulin, Teba’s son who later becomes the Sage of Wind in “Tears of the Kingdom,” also made a trip to the past during the DLC of “Age of Calamity.” The storyline of “Age of Calamity” portrayed an alternate timeline where Calamity Ganon was successfully contained, and the original Champions survived the battle. Witnessing the new and contemporary Champions join forces for victory – a triumph that also fostered character growth for both groups – was a touching experience that enriched their individual stories.

Age Of Imprisonment Could Repeat This Time Travel Plot

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it was only Princess Zelda who traveled to the past. However, it is not impossible that characters like Riju, Yunobo, Tulin, and Sidon, along with other contemporary figures, could also make such a journey during the Age of Imprisonment. This scenario would enable them to have closer encounters with the original Elemental Sages, who were only seen briefly in Tears of the Kingdom for power transfer. They might also meet Mineru, King Rauru’s sister, who fought alongside the Sages as a Spirit Sage in a robotic form.

In Tears of the Kingdom, it’s intriguing to envision the contemporary Sages employing their elemental powers directly – in this game, these powers were predominantly wielded by enigmatic avatars that joined Link following the awakening of each Sage’s power. The Sages themselves had few opportunities to engage in personal combat, mostly during the climactic confrontation against Ganondorf. This leaves us wondering what their fighting capabilities might look like if they were regularly involved in battle, given their status as Sages.

Zelda, King Rauru, Queen Sonia, Mineru, and the four masked Sages. Although additional past characters may be introduced to the playable roster, it could also enlarge this roster substantially by incorporating Link and the Sages into the mix.

It’s expected that we’ll learn more about who can be played in Age of Imprisonment as time goes on, since it doesn’t have a fixed launch date yet. But if characters similar to the modern Sages are present, they might not be disclosed until the game is officially out, much like in Age of Calamity.
