As a veteran gamer who’s been around since the golden age of console wars, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia hearing about the surge of Modern Warfare Remastered due to the H2M Mod. In my day, we didn’t have mods; we had cartridges and controllers! But times change, and this free-to-play mod is a breath of fresh air for those of us who remember the thrill of the original Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer experience.
The remastered version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, launched in 2016, is currently witnessing a significant resurgence in popularity on Steam. It has moved up to the second spot on the ‘top sellers’ list, trailing only behind Counter-Strike 2 and leaving Black Ops 6 far behind. This surge is primarily due to the upcoming release of the H2M Mod this week, which is a revival mod for Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer experience built upon the foundation of MW Remastered.

The H2M Mod is quite ambitious, transferring all of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer experience into Modern Warfare Remastered. It encompasses every map, game mode, weapon, and even some exclusive content, such as maps built on single-player settings. This mod can be played for free, but you need to own Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam in order to join the action – this is why it’s gaining popularity again.
On Steam’s Top Sellers list, Modern Warfare Remastered (MWR) ranks second, excluding the Steam Deck from game considerations. In 2016, MWR reached its peak on this platform with a total of 1,409 users, and it’s anticipated that the upcoming release of the H2M Mod could surpass this previous high record.
Back in the day, Activision gave us a remastered version of Modern Warfare 2 (2009), but they left out the multiplayer aspect that made it truly iconic, leaving fans like me feeling let down worldwide. However, this mod revival is bringing the game back to its former glory and the footage we’ve seen so far is a testament to its authenticity, making me as excited as ever to jump back into the action!
