As a seasoned admirer of these extraordinary youngsters and their remarkable Quirks, I must say that each one of them possesses a unique blend of power and strategy that sets them apart.
As we delve deeper into the ongoing Final War storyline of the My Hero Academia comic series (at the time this text is written), let’s explore some key characters who are shaping this epic tale. Interestingly, not all of these influential figures are Pro Heroes or students from Class 1-A; in fact, some students from Class 1-B have caught our attention and even surpassed a few from Class A in terms of intrigue.
In the anime produced by Studio Bones, particularly during the Joint Training Arc, the Class B students were previously kept out of the limelight. However, since then, their true Quirk abilities have been revealed, making it intriguing to evaluate and compare them all. So, let’s take a look at each student from Class B in My Hero Academia, their unique Quirks, the potential of those powers, and what they’ve accomplished with them thus far, ranking them from least effective to most potent.
20 Solid Air
Kosei Tsuburaba
Regrettably, one captivating trait among Class B students is holding the lowest rank. Despite this, Kosei Tsuburaba’s Quirk, Solid Air, was sufficient to secure him a spot at UA High. Although it currently ranks last among all students, there’s vast potential in this ability to transform air into a solid form. Initially, his power to expel air and make it solid appeared weak. However, during the Joint Training arc, the true potential of this Quirk was revealed.
The standout aspect of Tsuburaba’s power lies in the fact that his lung capacity is its only constraint. From the Sports Festival to sparring sessions with Class A, Kosei transformed Solid Air from being as fragile as glass (shattering with a single punch) into something resilient enough to withstand multiple full-force strikes with a metal pipe. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that it’s still just air, and there are numerous individuals and Quirks capable of effortlessly shattering his fortified Solid Air. However, this power holds great promise for the future, and it’s entirely on Mr. Tsuburaba to determine how far he can push its capabilities.
19 Cemendine
Kojiro Bondo
Among all the distinctive abilities and appearances in Class B, Kojiro Bondo truly distinguishes himself exceptionally, be it his towering height, wide shoulders, enormous hands, yellow complexion, or simply his head. Similar to the previous Quirk, Bondo’s is another that excels at limiting individuals. Bondo’s unique ability (known as Cemendine) allows him to expel copious amounts of a glue-like substance from the openings on his head. Admittedly, it may seem peculiar and limited in use, right? However, with appropriate support items, Kojiro can immobilize foes at a distance or even apply the adhesive to himself to fashion makeshift weapons. In essence, depending on how he utilizes his situational Quirk effectively, Bondo could evolve from an unremarkable sidekick into a highly competent hero.
It appears that Kojiro may not excel in close-combat fighting at present. If he were to focus on hand-to-hand training, like Uravity, he could approach opponents, use his Quirk to restrict them somewhat, and then leverage his combat skills for a greater advantage. However, at the moment, Kojiro primarily utilizes his Quirk as a distance ‘sticky trap’, which doesn’t elevate him high in the overall rankings.
18 Gyrate
Sen Kaibara
Just like Solid Air, Quirk Gyrate (the ability Mr. Kaibara has to rapidly rotate any body part) is powerful, yet its full potential remains unexplored. In the battle against Ojiro, his swiftly spinning hands managed to match the opponent’s strength by drilling into Tailman’s tail. However, he could have inflicted more damage if he had considered a broader perspective in utilizing his Quirk.
Properly employed, Sen might initiate by rotating a leg, transferring that mechanical energy to his hips/upper body, then to an arm, and finally his hand – all through rotation. With each step, the force of the spin grows, culminating in a powerful strike. However, Sen Kaibara predominantly employs this ability for drilling purposes only, which is why it’s not highly rated at present.
17 Weld
Yosetsu Awase
Among the Class B students, Yosetsu Awase is one who has garnered significant attention from fans. His unique ability, known as “Weld,” allows him to join together both organic and inorganic materials, similar to how a blacksmith welds metal. This peculiar Emitter-type Quirk, common among Class B students, is particularly useful for restraining villains rather than engaging in combat.
As a devoted fan, I must say, the intriguing aspect of Yosetsu’s Quirk lies in its independence from metal and heat for welding purposes. This opens up a wide array of potential applications, such as binding foes to themselves, walls, or even heavy objects like cars. Yet, it’s crucial to acknowledge that Awase needs physical contact with his opponent to activate the Quick, and combat isn’t its strong suit. This means Yosetsu’s capabilities are somewhat restricted at the moment. However, the true value of this Quirk will only become apparent if Yosetsu hones his hand-to-hand combat skills in some way, making it challenging to fully assess its current worth.
16 Lizard Tail Splitter
Setsuna Tokage
Among the more intriguing abilities showcased in the series thus far, Setsuna Tokage’s Lizard Tail Splitter Quirk shares some similarities with Captain Buggy’s Devil Fruit Power from One Piece. Essentially, Setsuna can divide her body into distinct parts that she can control independently. Furthermore, she has the ability to fly using these separate sections. During the Joint Training Arc, fans observed how this Quirk could be employed tactically against recon-type Quirks, particularly sound-based ones. However, its potential application in a combat scenario hasn’t been fully explored yet. There are numerous innovative ways to exploit this Quirk, such as using it for flight, navigating confined spaces, or evading harmful attacks.
It appears that, during her fight with Bakugo’s team, her Quirk abilities could still benefit from more refinement. Moreover, although she can fragment herself into numerous pieces to attack foes like ammunition, any villain possessing a destructive Quirk could simply incinerate or demolish those fragments, leaving Setsuna in a vulnerable position. Remarkably, this drawback is reminiscent of the disadvantage Nico Robin from “One Piece” faces with her Devil Fruit ability – while she can create numerous copies of her body parts, any harm inflicted on those copies is felt by Nico herself.
15 Poltergeist
Reiko Yanagi
The character Reiko possesses an intriguing ability akin to Poltergeist. Like the Lizard Tail Splitter, she exhibits a broad control over lightweight objects, causing them to move erratically. However, unlike her own body parts, she manipulates random objects in her surroundings. Named Poltergeist due to her reserved nature and the Quirk’s function, it essentially equates to telekinesis – a power frequently found in comic books and manga.
Reiko’s main disadvantage at this stage is that her Quirk isn’t fully developed yet due to her youth. In mock battles, she only managed to manipulate objects equivalent in weight to a human, without demonstrating levitation abilities for herself or others. However, if Reiko increases the weight limit of her Quirk and learns how to apply it on other people, such as lifting them or an object they’re standing on, she has great potential to become an elite Hero. Interestingly, Reiko appears to have made significant progress with her Quirk since using it to transport large weapons to Mt. Lady during the Final War Arc.
14 Big Fist
Itsuka Kendo
Itsuka Kendo, the beloved Class 1-B character and Class Representative of Class B, possesses a unique ability known as Big Fist. This Quirk, as its name suggests, grants her the power to manipulate the size of her fists significantly. To many, this might seem like a weak or unwanted power, but when wielded by someone skilled like Kendo, it proves to be quite formidable.
Firstly, Kendo appears to have extensive training in close-combat, which sets her apart from many of her peers who lack such skills, thereby demonstrating her ability to deliver a powerful punch.
13 Horn Cannon
Pony Tsunotori
The Horn Cannon Quirk is similar to the unconventional abilities like Poltergeist or Lizard Tail Splitter. However, despite appearing as just a gimmick, it showcases significant power potential. For instance, during mock battles, Tsunotori can fire multiple horns that regenerate swiftly and effortlessly, and she appears to manage up to four of them using a form of telekinesis. Remarkably, the weight capacity these horns can carry seems far greater than Reiko’s limit, as Pony has been observed supporting herself on her horns and even sustaining a post-steel transformation Tetsutetsu.
These items are quite versatile; they possess substantial power and can carry a heavy load. While on paper, they might seem less potent than Hawk’s feathers, given that he ranks as the second-strongest hero, simply being compared to him is a massive compliment.
12 Mushroom
Kinoko Komori
Although this ability might appear overly specialized – growing mushrooms at will – it’s surprisingly versatile due to the vast array of mushroom species worldwide. While one may initially consider it impractical, there are thousands of mushroom types, each with unique properties that border on the magical. Some can induce hallucinations, others can render consumers immobile, and many are lethal if consumed.
Rethink the concept behind Komori’s Mushroom ability from a fresh perspective, considering what could happen if she were to use it maliciously. For instance, imagine her turning a highly toxic Death Cap mushroom into growth within someone’s mouth. However, it is fortunate that Komori appears to be kind-hearted, and the UA organization acknowledges the potential of her unique Quirk, employing it strategically during the Final War arc.
11 Razor Sharp
Togaru Kamakiri
Among Class B Quirks, Razor Sharp stands out as one of the most lethally potent, making it a chilling prospect when wielded by a nefarious character. This Quirk enables Togaru to generate blades of various forms and sizes from any part of his own body.
He can use these blades to cut through steel, stick into the surrounding terrain to lock him in place, block attacks, and more. The reason they’re higher than something like Big Fist, for example, is simply because of their durability, their versatility, and lethality. Basically, Togaru’s Quirk is at a much further ‘starting point’ than Keno’s Quirk, but where each Quirk ultimately ends up is entirely up to the wielder.
10 Scales
Hiryu Rin
Picture this: If Kirishima possessed the ability not only to harden himself as usual, but also to expel fragments of solidified skin similar to bullets. This is reminiscent of Hiryu Rin’s Quirk, Scale. Rin can fortify his body with these scale-like structures, discharge them from his gauntlets like rapid fire, or even flip the sharp edges outward, transforming him into a sort of makeshift porcupine.
His defense may not be as robust as typical hardening Quirks like Steel or Harden, but it offers greater versatility. He excels in combat at both long and short distances, surpassing Class B students whose Quirks specialize in either one. He’s already incorporating support items to enhance his Quirk’s functionality, and there’s plenty of potential for further growth with this ability. With sufficient preparation, Hiryu could manufacture weapons from his scales in advance, transform them into shrapnel for grenades, or potentially replicate Kirishima’s “Unbreakable” move by increasing his durability even more.
9 Black
Shihai Kuroiro
In the possession of an assassin or trained killer, this ability, known as “Black,” would rank among the most potent in existence. Even when wielded by a hero, it remains remarkably powerful. By itself, Black has limited combat potential. However, for evading enemies or keeping them on their toes, it’s one of the top choices available. In light of how the Hero Public Safety Division has collaborated with heroes like Hawks and Lady Nagant, it’s surprising that Shihai hasn’t been recruited by them yet.
Because Vantablack’s size or mass doesn’t matter when he merges with darkness, it could easily be used to sneak into places and could even be used to potentially sneak inside another person, considering it’s completely dark within the human body. But even without the body horror, Vantablack is a Hero who would grow in power exponentially with the right Support Items. For example, if Shihai had a support item that could instantly paint anything around it black, Kuroiro would be able to fulfill the role of both an espionage hero and a combat one. And, depending on how it grows in the future, this Quirk might even be able to take control of anything that’s covered in shadow, be it entire vehicles or even buildings.
8 Size
Yui Kodai
Vantablack’s peculiarity isn’t the only dangerous ability; Miss Yui Kodai, another shy character from Class B, possesses a similar power. With just a simple pill, she could make use of her unique ability to expand its size exponentially, say, to the size of a truck. It’s fortunate that they are heroes, as these powers would be terrifying if they fell into the wrong hands.
In the manga “MHA,” Kohei Hoshikori has yet to establish an upper limit for Yui’s Size Quirk, leaving fans wondering about its true potential – whether it can shrink or expand significantly. The key aspect that sets this Quirk apart is that it modifies both mass and size, which contributes to its high ranking among fans.
7 Comic
Manga Fukidashi
Among the peculiarities displayed in Class B, Manga’s stands out as the most adaptable. For those who have delved into the world of Fairy Tail, his ability shares similarities with Levy’s Solid Script magic. Nevertheless, unlike Levy who could give physical shape to any and all words, Fukidashi can only manifest onomatopoeia.
Still, never underestimate the power of sound effects. Depending on the words that Manga chooses, Mr. Fukidashi could replicate a lot of other students’ Quirks, using onomatopoeia such as “Boom” for Bakugo’s, “Zap” for Kaminari’s, or even the classic “Pew-Pew” to copy Aoyama’s lasers. Plus, Fukidashi is another one of the few Class B characters to reappear in the Final War Arc to show that his Quirk is useful enough to be of vital importance in one of the more dire circumstances in the entire series. Not only does Fukidashi get to help out with his Quirk by using his ‘Zap’ onomatopoeia to help keep the school afloat, but he also helps block some of All for One’s Rivet Shots during during the end moments of the battle against Midoriya by making a ‘boulder of words’ to block them.
6 Beast
Jurota Shishida
Among the various Quirks on this list, not many are specifically designed for hand-to-hand combat like Deku’s, Kirishima’s, and Bakugo’s. However, Shishida’s Beast Quirk is an exception. It enables Jurota to transform between a regular human form and a “beast” form. Picture it as the Beast from X-Men or even the Hulk, but unlike them, Jurota maintains control over his transformed state.
In his Beast Form, Jurota exhibits increased speed, strength, durability, and observational skills. He becomes a superhuman with extraordinary physical abilities, complemented by heightened senses similar to those of a wild animal. Additionally, Shishida has demonstrated the ability to use his Quirk in innovative ways, which is less common among characters like him. Despite being relatively simple compared to other Class B Quirks, there’s something to be said for keeping things straightforward.
5 Twin Impact
Nirengeki Shoda
In the following ability, Mr. Nirengeki has the power to give a second powerful strike to anything he initially affected. This additional strike is always stronger than the first one. Moreover, he can trigger this ‘second strike’ whenever he wants, enabling him to instantly alter the course and speed of objects in mid-flight, or accumulate strikes against an opponent which he can use at any convenient moment.
In a less family-friendly version of MHA, Shoda might be depicted as transforming ordinary guns into railguns or regular objects into cannonballs. Each blow he delivers in combat would leave his opponents apprehensive, anticipating the subsequent impact. The main limitation for him is his ongoing physical development. If Nirengeki concentrates on muscle growth, he could amplify an already powerful punch to the level of All-Might’s mighty strikes.
4 Steel
Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu
Regarding straightforward traits, Steel stands out as the finest among them all. This is TestuTestu’s unique ability, a Class B version of Kirishima, better known as the fearless red marvel, Red Riot. It grants him the power to transform his entire body into steel, much like Colossus from the X-Men comics.
In this form, Testsu possesses an incredible ability to plow through most obstacles, defeat individuals lacking superhuman strength, and endure severe conditions such as being enveloped by flames. However, his vulnerabilities lie in anything that could harm steel, like intense heat or strong magnets. Compared to Kirishima, Testsu’s Quirk offers greater durability potential due to its elemental nature and sensitivity to external factors like the iron he consumes. Moreover, as demonstrated during the Final War Arc, Quirks dependent on an external source can exhibit significant variations in strength and adaptability based on the user’s preparation. Notably, Testsu has utilized his Quirk more frequently than other members of Class B, even enhancing his heat resistance and charging through fire to aid Mina Ashido during the Liberation Arc for Paranormals.
3 Vines
Ibara Shiozaki
It’s worth noting that Ibara’s Vines Quirk surpasses Steel’s due to its incredible versatility. Unlike steel, Ibara seems to be able to generate an unlimited number of vines from her body. These vines can act as numerous tendrils, allowing her to fight effectively from any distance. She can reinforce the vines to deliver stronger blows or create a more robust defense, and even shape them for various uses. Remarkably, her opponents often end up hurting themselves while attacking the vines due to a self-inflicting property similar to Hiryu’s scales.
If Ibara is skilled in martial arts, she can effortlessly create weapons or armor from vines that make her a formidable opponent at close range. However, the main drawback of this ability is that Ibara needs sunlight and water to grow more vines if she exhausts them. Interestingly, the power of these vines diminishes significantly when the strength of her adversary surpasses a certain level. For instance, during the Paranormal Liberation Arc, Ibara attempted to restrain Gigantomachia with her vines, but he effortlessly tore them apart as if they were mere paper.
2 Softening
Juzo Honenuki
As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to say that Juzo stands out as one of the top students in Class B, hands down. He managed to secure his spot at UA alongside notable figures like Momo and Todoroki, largely due to his exceptional adaptability in thought, making him an absolute mastermind on the battlefield. To add to that, his Quirk is more potent than it initially appears. With Honenuki, he can manipulate any inorganic surface he touches by making it soft, enabling him to navigate through it or even ensnare enemies, transforming the ground beneath them into a treacherous quicksand-like terrain.
If Juzo had evil intentions, he could manipulate the earth with his Quirk by making it soft under someone, then hardening it again when opponents are trapped in the soil, essentially burying them. This may not be as dramatic as Reiko’s Poltergeist or as destructive as Kamakiri’s blades, but it gives someone like Juzo, who is highly intelligent, an advantage in almost any scenario. In terms of current storylines, Juzo has primarily utilized his Quirk to restrain common enemies such as those trying to free Gigantomachia, but this ability still proves incredibly beneficial overall.
1 Copy
Neito Monoma
A power that duplicates other powers often ranks high due to its inherent strength. While Monoma can’t utilize multiple Quirks concurrently, he can swap between ones he’s replicated and accumulate their effects sequentially, not simultaneously. Moreover, during the Final War arc, he demonstrated the ability to perpetually use someone else’s Quirk if he maintains continuous contact with them.
The main issues with Monoma’s ability, aside from his general lack of heroic behavior, are twofold. First, he can only use copied powers for a limited time, but he appears to be able to extend this duration through practice. Second, he must physically touch the person who possesses the power he wants to copy. If Monoma finds a way around this “touch” requirement, such as being able to copy powers by touching something the power holder has previously touched, he would essentially become a less versatile version of All For One. This is ironic, considering that Monoma is currently using Aizawa’s Erasure Quirk to help bring an end to All For One in one of the series’ most memorable battles.
