Action anime, and especially superhero shows like My Hero Academia, usually center around a hero defeating villains and saving people. Izuku Midoriya, also known as Deku, has already beaten strong enemies like Muscular, Overhaul, and even Tomura Shigaraki, protecting Japan multiple times. However, Deku can’t be everywhere, so other heroes step up to keep the country safe from everyday threats.
While many smaller villains were defeated without Deku’s help, fans are most interested in the major villains who were taken down when he wasn’t around. These villains were usually defeated by other pro heroes or UA students, and surprisingly, sometimes even by other villains! Occasionally, villains eliminate threats for Deku, but he shouldn’t rely on that happening.
Twice Met His End When Hawks Used Lethal Force
Quirk: Double
Image via Bones.
Twice, a villain with a tragic past and a personality similar to Deadpool, was a surprisingly sympathetic member of the League of Villains. He mostly played a supporting role until the League launched into a massive final war. Sadly, he was killed during that battle, along with many other villains who were either defeated or captured.
The fight between Hawks and Twice took a dark turn when Hawks unexpectedly used his Fierce Wings Quirk to deliver a fatal blow. Twice was caught completely off guard and couldn’t defend himself. This act was a stark contrast to how Deku or even Endeavor would likely have handled the situation, leaving Hawks with a complicated reputation among fans of My Hero Academia.
Hood’s Defeat Marked the Rise of Endeavor as the #1 Hero
Quirk: Muscle Augmentation
Image via Bones. While the Hood Nomu mainly served to advance the plot, it still played an important role. It demonstrated the incredible potential of the Nomu, showing that Dr. Garaki could create beings powerful enough to challenge even the top ten pro heroes. This helped emphasize the growing sense of danger after All Might’s retirement.
The battle with Hood was a defining moment for Endeavor at the close of My Hero Academia‘s fourth season. Before this, Endeavor hadn’t faced a truly difficult opponent, but Hood proved to be a formidable challenge. There was a scary moment where it looked like Endeavor might lose to this artificially created villain, but he ultimately persevered with a powerful surge of strength. This victory was a major turning point, finally earning Endeavor the support of viewers and establishing him as a strong contender for the title of #1 hero.
Kurogiri Faded Away During the Final Battle Against All For One
Quirk: Warp Gate
Image via Bones. Kurogiri primarily supported the League of Villains, so he rarely fought directly against powerful heroes like Deku or All Might. His main job was to use his teleportation ability to move his allies around the battlefield, as seen during events like the USJ incident and the attack on the training camp. Eventually, Kurogiri was captured and ultimately perished during the final battle.
Deku didn’t have to worry about fighting Kurogiri, and didn’t have time anyway. The heroes needed Kurogiri’s ability to control where everyone fought, and Deku was already focused on battling Tomura Shigaraki. Kurogiri ultimately collapsed from exhaustion, having pushed himself too hard using his Warp Gate to help the pro heroes against All For One. Bakugo’s powerful attacks then quickly finished him off by scattering what was left of his form.
Gigantomachia Was Blown Apart When All For One Turned on Him
Quirk: Gigantification
Image via Bones. Gigantomachia was a massive villain who was incredibly hard to fight, but the pro heroes attempted to stop him anyway. Deku didn’t often encounter this huge enemy, so it was up to heroes like Gran Torino and the students of Class 1-A to battle him. Deku witnessed the fight at UA, though students such as Momo Yaoyorozu were the ones who really took the lead.
Gigantomachia managed to break free and participate in the climactic battle, but his defeat was inevitable. Tragically, he suffered the consequences of betraying All For One. Without a second thought, All For One unleashed devastating long-range attacks, completely destroying Gigantomachia. This showed, once again, that All For One sees everyone as a tool to be used and discarded, and no one is safe from his power.
Dabi Was Defeated on Multiple Levels When His Family Opposed Him
Quirk: Blueflame

Dabi first appeared in My Hero Academia with Himiko Toga as an enigmatic villain who could create blue flames. Initially, he was satisfied simply being a powerful and mysterious enemy, letting his actions speak for themselves. However, his true identity was eventually revealed: he was Toya Todoroki, the presumed-dead older brother of Shoto. This revelation led to a direct conflict with Shoto and their father, Endeavor, ultimately uniting the entire Todoroki family against him.
Dabi was determined to tear down the world heroes like Shoto and Endeavor had built, driven by a desire to hurt his family. This path led him to a deeply tragic state as a villain, but there was still a glimmer of hope. After the Todoroki family worked together to calm him down, Dabi was taken into custody, seriously injured. In that vulnerable moment, Toya Todoroki began a small journey toward making amends, though not because of Deku’s intervention. While Deku has helped others like Gentle Criminal and La Brava find redemption, healing Toya’s emotional wounds is something only his family can accomplish.
Himiko Toga Gave Her Own Life to Repay Ochaco’s Kindness
Quirk: Transform
Image via Bones. Deku and Himiko Toga clashed in battle several times, and this wasn’t accidental – Toga had a strong obsession with him. The story, however, focused on connecting Toga’s story with Ochaco Uraraka’s, portraying them as reflections of each other. Ochaco played a key role in revealing both the good and bad sides of Toga, particularly as shown towards the end of the seventh season of the My Hero Academia anime.
Ochaco was able to rescue the frightened girl trapped by Himiko, the villain, without needing Deku’s help. Inspired by Deku’s ability to reach people, Ochaco talked to Himiko and convinced her to stop, successfully saving the girl. This was even more effective than when Deku had reasoned with Gentle Criminal, and it ultimately moved Himiko to save Ochaco’s life, even at her own expense.
Mr. Compress Couldn’t Escape When the Villains Lost the Final War
Quirk: Compress
Image via Bones. Several villains from the League of Villains and Paranormal Liberation Front haven’t been defeated by Deku, though a few have encountered him. A prime example is Mr. Compress, who frightened Deku by using his Quirk to trap Katsuki Bakugo. Because of the combination of Mr. Compress’s Quirk and Warp Gate, Deku was unable to prevent Bakugo from being kidnapped.
During the battle against the Shie Hassaikai and the final war, Mr. Compress fought against the police. Deku was already dealing with powerful opponents like Lady Nagant and Tomura, so he didn’t have a chance to confront Mr. Compress. Ultimately, Mr. Compress was captured along with other villains as the fighting ended, bringing his story to a relatively peaceful close.
Re-Destro Couldn’t Handle the Power of Tomura’s Awakened Decay Quirk
Quirk: Stress
Image via Bones. Re-Destro is unusual among major villains because he was defeated by another villain, Tomura. Several other prominent villains also fell to rivals: Curious died fighting Himiko, and Geten lost a powerful battle against Dabi. Re-Destro and Tomura were both leaders of large villain groups, and initially, Re-Destro’s Quirk gave him an advantage. However, Tomura’s Quirk awakening allowed him to overcome that advantage and win.
That storyline allowed the villains to gain abilities similar to those usually reserved for heroes. Twice, Himiko, and Tomura all unlocked new levels of power during intense fights. Re-Destro was quickly overwhelmed when Tomura’s Quirk, Decay, became incredibly powerful, and he barely escaped with his life. Surprisingly, Tomura spared him, and the two eventually joined forces to create the massive Paranormal Liberation Front.
