In the original plotline for “My Hero Academia,” Izuku Midoriya, rather than possessing a Quirk, was meant to be quirkless. The creator, Horikoshi, designed this narrative to bring things full circle. Just as Izuku began his journey quirkless and found inspiration in All Might’s words, the story would have concluded with him inspiring a new generation even after losing his own Quirk. Was it predetermined throughout the course of the series that the initial singular hero narrative (“This is the story of how I became the greatest hero”) in chapter 1 would evolve into a collective hero narrative (“This is the story of how we all became the greatest heroes” in chapter 324) and eventually culminate in a continuous act of mutual aid (“This is the story of how we all continue to reach a hand out to others together” in chapter 430)?

Horikoshi clarified that contrary to initial plans, Deku didn’t end up becoming a teacher with his trademark line, “You can be a hero!” Instead, the story evolved, focusing on the question, “What truly makes a hero great?” The answer the manga arrived at is that being a hero involves extending a helping hand to others. As a result, the final monologue in chapter 430 took a different form than originally intended.

Why My Hero Academia’s New Ending Is Better

Deku Isn’t Left Without A Quirk

As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to say that while the original ending of My Hero Academia was terrific, the new one has really stolen the show! What sets it apart is the extensive focus it places on Izuku Midoriya’s friends, who are a crucial part of the ensemble. And let me tell you, seeing Izuku regain some powers again in this ending was just the cherry on top!

In many Shonen series, side characters can often feel underdeveloped and lack depth. So, it’s truly refreshing to see Horikoshi give these beloved characters a significant role in the story’s conclusion. It’s a testament to his skill as a writer and shows that he’s always striving to push the boundaries of this incredible series.

Instead, it wouldn’t have seemed fitting for Izuku, despite everything he accomplished, to remain Quirkless. Giving him recognition for his courage and heroic nature by bestowing upon him a Hero Suit, enabling him to return as a Hero once more, seemed like the ideal conclusion.
