My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential

Highlights

  • Eri’s Rewind Quirk has enormous potential, but was hindered by the villainous Overhaul, limiting her growth.
  • Overhaul’s power, Overhaul, wasn’t fully utilized beyond destruction, missing out on its restoration abilities, diminishing its potential.
  • Tamaki’s Manifest Quirk is versatile, allowing transformation of various body parts, but could be used more creatively and effectively.

As someone who has closely followed the My Hero Academia series, I can’t help but be intrigued by the unique Quirks that each character possesses and how they utilize them in various situations. Having delved deep into the backstories of several Pro Heroes, I’ve come to appreciate the depth and potential of some quirks that may initially seem identical or underestimated.

In the world of Kohei Horikoshi’s “My Hero Academia,” unique abilities known as “Quirks” set each character apart. These capabilities come in various strange and functional forms, making them a hero or villain’s defining trait. Thankfully, most powerful individuals have mastered their Quirks to the fullest.

As someone who has been deeply engrossed in the captivating world of My Hero Academia for years, I can’t help but notice the intriguing characters with extraordinary Quirks that have barely scratched the surface of their abilities. It’s a shame, really, because these unique powers brimming with potential could revolutionize the battlefield and change the course of the storyline in unimaginable ways.

8 Eri’s Rewind

A Miraculous Ability That Was Exploited By An Evil Villain

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential
  • First Manga Appearance: Chapter 156
  • First Anime Appearance: Episode 76

Eri’s unique power, called “Rewind,” holds immense strength in My Hero Academia stories. With this ability, she can restore a living being to an earlier stage, making it useful for healing and rejuvenation among other things. Despite her youth, Eri has not fully explored the extent of Rewind’s capabilities. Unfortunately, her growth was significantly impeded by the malevolent Overhaul.

Kai Chisaki abducted Eri with the intent of testing brutal experiments on her to create a drug capable of neutralizing Quirks. Consequently, Eri’s apprehension towards using Rewind naturally has grown, and she hasn’t fully developed its potential. Fortunately, Eri’s experience at U.A. High School provided some training, helping her manage her abilities more proficiently. Her future as a Pro Hero holds great promise.

7 Kai Chisaki’s Overhaul

It Was Only Used To Destroy, When It Can Do So Much More

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential
  • First Manga Appearance: Chapter 115
  • First Anime Appearance: Episode 62

It’s intriguing how fixated Overhaul was on Eri’s Rewind ability, when he could have explored more effective ways to utilize his own quirk, a significant aspect of his persona named after it. Overhaul endows its bearer with the power to dismantle and reconstruct whatever they desire by mere contact. However, it appears that for Kai Chisaki, the initial capability of this quirk was the only aspect he put to good use.

Tomura Shigaraki’s Decay Quirk, which can disintegrate and kill, was developed by All For One through the removal of its restorative aspect from the Overhaul Quirk. Although Chisaki primarily utilized this power for lethal purposes, there have been instances where he merged with his subordinates to transform into a colossal monster as an alternative. Had he employed such methods more frequently, he might not have lost control of his quirk during battle.

6 Tamaki Amajiki’s Manifest

The Most Versatile Transformation-Type Quirk

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential
  • First Manga Appearance: Chapter 132
  • First Anime Appearance: Episode 68

Transformation Quirks have the limitation of allowing their users to transform into just one particular form. However, Tamaki Amajiki‘s Manifest Quirk is an intriguing deviation from the norm since it enables him to change various body parts into whatever edible item he has consumed recently: be it a cow, chicken, octopus, or even plants.

In truth, Tamaki has showcased some remarkable and innovative applications of Manifest. However, there’s still room for improvement. During the Final War Arc, he ingeniously developed the powerful Plasma Cannon by merging various things he consumed with Nejire’s Wave Motion Quirk. Sadly, this creation didn’t seem to make a dent in Shigaraki when unleashed against him. This outcome left many fans underwhelmed and yearning for more from Tamaki. They believe that Manifest could have been utilized in a far more captivating manner, such as transforming himself into a fearsome chimera composed of various animal traits.

5 Manga Fukidashi’s Comic

A Creative Ability That Was Relegated To The Background

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential
  • First Manga Appearance: Chapter 200
  • First Anime Appearance: Episode 94

Class 1-B’s unique character, Manga Fukidashi, stands out with his distinctive design – a head shaped like a speech bubble. For years, fans pondered over what special power he possessed. Their curiosity was finally quenched when it was unveiled: A quirk that brings various onomatopoeia to life through sound.

Although the creative Quirk first emerged in the Joint Training Arc of the manga, it failed to reach its full potential afterwards, particularly during the Final War Arc where its usage was limited to producing electric onomatopoeia for charging U.A High School’s Sky Coffin. It’s disheartening that series like “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” have effectively demonstrated the enjoyment a character with such powers can bring, as exemplified by Koichi Hirose and his Stand, Echoes.

4 Kosei Tsuburaba’s Solid Air

He Would Be Much More Relevant If He Used His Power In Better Ways

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential
  • First Manga Appearance: Chapter 30
  • First Anime Appearance: Episode 17

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: I was really impressed by Kosei Tsuburaba from Class 1-B when I first saw him using his Quirk, Solid Air, during the U.A. Sports Festival. But unfortunately, he hasn’t stood out much since then. It’s a shame because he had such a promising start.

Kosei has the power to set firmness in the air around him and sculpt it at will. He’s utilized this talent to generate floating stages and imprison adversaries in Air Jails, but there are countless other ways he could employ it, particularly offensively. The ability to manipulate the air surrounding individuals is incredibly potent, yet Kosei hasn’t fully harnessed its potential, which might be a reason why some readers struggle to recall his name.

3 Pixie-Bob’s Earth Flow

A Hero Who Can Create Her Own Army Of Monsters

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential
  • First Manga Appearance: Chapter 70
  • First Anime Appearance: Episode 40

Among the Wild, Wild Pussycats, each member holds a special place in our memories for various reasons. However, Ryuko Tsuchikawa, also known as Pixie-Bob, tends not to draw the limelight as frequently as her peers. Surprisingly, she possesses an exceptional and formidable Quirk named Earth Flow. With this ability, she can control the earth around her, a power that might initially seem similar to other Quirks such as Cement or Softening. But Ryuko’s Earth Flow offers unique possibilities that set her apart.

An intriguing aspect of Earth Flow sets it apart: It brings Earth Beasts to life, intelligent beings sculpted from soil that Pixie-Bob can command remotely. This unique talent was demonstrated merely once, during a trial for Class 1-A at the Forest Training Camp. Regrettably, since then, it has remained unused. This missed chance for Pixie-Bob is unfortunate because the Pro Heroes could have greatly benefited from an horde of powerful Earth Beasts during their battles against Shigaraki and All For One.

2 Best Jeanist’s Fiber Master

Controlling Everyone’s Clothes Is An Underrated Superpower

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential
  • First Manga Appearance: Chapter 87
  • First Anime Appearance: Episode 27

Using a simpler and more conversational tone: Best Jeanist, with his flamboyant look and strange abilities, might appear odd among the esteemed Pro Heroes at first glance. However, underestimating this hero is a mistake, as Fiber Master’s quirk, which allows him to manipulate any type of fiber, proves to be incredibly powerful in everyday life. With most people wearing clothes, having the ability to control these fibers can bring about remarkable efficiency and effectiveness.

Best Jeanist has creatively employed Fiber Master’s abilities, particularly when controlling massive carbon fibers to subdue Gigantomachia. However, he may hold greater strength than what we’ve seen. Given that every major antagonist in the series wears clothing, Best Jeanist could potentially apprehend all of them effortlessly using this technique. It’s unfortunate that his only attempt to use it against an adversary was All For One, one of the few characters capable of breaking free from Fiber Master’s restraints.

1 Kudo And Izuku Midoriya’s Gearshift

Deku’s Final Quirk Was Barely Seen Again After Its Reveal

My Hero Academia: Quirks With Untapped Potential
  • First Manga Appearance: Chapter 368

In his climactic fight against Shigaraki, Izuku Midoriya unveils an extra ability from One For All: the power called Gearshift. This unique quirk enables its wielder to alter the rate at which objects move, disregarding the usual inertia. Previously owned by Kudo, Gearshift was primarily used for bullet speed manipulation. However, Deku’s prowess allows him to elevate this power to unprecedented heights.

It was thrilling to see Deku utilizing his new ability together with his existing quirks, sending Shigaraki soaring through the air with forceful assaults. Regrettably, Gearshift has scarcely appeared since then, and matters became even more complicated when Deku had to forfeit all of his Quirks to vanquish the primary adversary. Although he discovered new applications for Gearshift that surpassed Kudo’s uses, there remains significant potential that went unused.
