Shoto Todoroki is a compelling character in My Hero Academia. He’s the son of Endeavor, the second-highest-ranked Pro Hero in Japan, and was born from a marriage arranged to produce a powerful combination of Quirks – half ice and half fire. While this ability made him a top student at U.A. High School, it also constantly reminded him of the abuse he suffered at his father’s hands.
Shoto Todoroki’s journey in My Hero Academia involved mastering his powerful and adaptable Quirk, resulting in several impressive moments that highlight just how strong he is. While there are many examples, these eight stand out as the most notable throughout the series.
Quickly Defeating Sero At The Sports Festival
He Channeled His Own Resentment Into One Powerful Attack
- Chapter 34 (Manga) Episode 20 (Anime)
The U.A. Sports Festival arc was a turning point for Shoto. It’s where he began to break away from his father’s control, developed a strong but friendly competition with Deku, and learned to embrace his fire powers. But this growth wasn’t simple, and his fight against Hanta Sero showed just how challenging it was for him.
Shoto had a tense argument with his father, Endeavor, right before his match, leaving him feeling intensely frustrated. When his battle with Sero started, he immediately unleashed a massive ice wall, quickly trapping his classmate and embarrassing him in front of a large audience. Although Shoto tried to explain that his outburst was due to his anger with his father, the incident clearly demonstrated his significant power advantage over many of his classmates.
Knocking Deku Out At The Sports Festival
The Scene That Turned Many My Hero Academia Viewers Into Lifelong Fans
- Chapter 40 (Manga) Episode 23 (Anime)
The competition between Shoto and Izuku Midoriya was captivating because they were essentially the chosen successors to the two most celebrated heroes in the country: Endeavor and All Might. This rivalry took center stage during the U.A. Sports Festival, culminating in an intense final battle after a lot of anticipation.
The fight wasn’t just a physical battle; it was also a challenge to Shoto’s beliefs. Deku encouraged Shoto to accept and use his fire-based powers, even suggesting he move past his complicated relationship with his father. This advice worked – Shoto finally embraced both sides of his Quirk, unlocking his full power and allowing him to perform his devastating Flashfreeze Heatwave attack. He ultimately won the match by knocking out his opponent, a particularly impressive feat considering Deku was also pushing his own Quirk, One for All, to its absolute limit.
Intercepting Deku With An Ice Wall
Another Moment That Proved Why He’s One Of Class 1-A’s Strongest Students
- Chapter 320 (Manga) Episode 136 (Anime)
After leaving U.A. High to work as a professional hero, Deku found his former classmates working together to convince him to return. Each member of Class 1-A contributed to this important effort, with Shoto playing a particularly crucial role.
During the fight between Deku and Class 1-A, Shoto quickly built a huge ice wall – much like the one he’d used against Hanta Sero – and used it to stop Deku for a short time. Although Deku eventually broke free, it was an impressive move, and it’s likely no one else in the class could have even slowed him down without Shoto’s help.
Helping Defeat Chimera
He Had A Crucial Role In One Of Class 1-A’s Most Important Fights
- My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising
The My Hero Academia movies feature incredibly strong characters, and surprisingly, they’re all officially part of the series’ storyline. A great example of this is Chojuro Kon, also known as Chimera, who is a key villain in the second movie, Heroes: Rising.
Chojuro Kon’s unique ability, called Chimera, gives him traits from many different animals, making him exceptionally strong and resilient, and even letting him breathe fire. It took a team effort from several students in Class 1-A to defeat him, with Shoto playing the most crucial part. He used his ice powers to hold Chimera back and shield against his flames, and ultimately, with help from his classmates, he froze the villain completely by blasting a powerful ice attack into his mouth.
Defeating Leviathan
Shoto’s First One-On-One Movie Fight
- My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission
The latest My Hero Academia movie, World Heroes’ Mission, really highlighted the dynamic between Deku, Bakugo, and Shoto, giving each of them a chance to shine in their own big fight scene. Shoto Todoroki faced off against Leviathan, a powerful villain with a Quirk called Helical Scythe – it let him control spinning, extendable tendrils. To make him even more dangerous, Leviathan had also taken a substance called Trigger, which dramatically increased his Quirk’s power.
Shoto’s battle with Leviathan was incredibly challenging. Leviathan repeatedly shattered Shoto’s ice with his Helical Scythe, and even Shoto’s powerful flames weren’t enough to seriously harm the villain’s tough body. Finally, Shoto landed a devastating Flashfire Fist – Jet Kindling – which burned Leviathan from the inside, ultimately defeating him. Given Leviathan’s status as one of the franchise’s strongest villains, Shoto’s solo victory was truly impressive.
Landing A Final Flashfire Fist On All For One
Shoto And His Dad Assisted Deku During The Final Battle Of The Series
- Chapter 421 (Manga) Episode 167 (Anime)
During the Final War Arc, Shoto’s actions were deeply connected to his family’s struggles, particularly his fight against his brother, Dabi, who threatened to destroy the city. Despite already battling Dabi twice and suffering severe burns, Shoto, along with his father Endeavor, still came to help Deku in his ultimate showdown with One for All.
Using Kurogiri’s Warp Gate, Shoto and Endeavor quickly appeared before the villain and struck him with a powerful combined attack, the Flashfire Fist. This not only seriously injured the villain but also stopped him from interfering with Deku. Even though they were badly hurt, both Shoto and Endeavor were crucial in the final battle, proving they are among the strongest heroes in the series.
Stopping Dabi Once And For All
He Was Finally Able To Stop His Brother’s Explosive Rampage
- Chapter 390 (Manga) Episode 157 (Anime)
Although Shoto won their first fight, Dabi managed to copy Shoto’s special move and ran off to find their father, Endeavor. Luckily, with help from his friend Iida Tenya, Shoto caught up to Dabi before his powerful fire Quirk spiraled out of control and caused a huge explosion.
The Todoroki family – Enji, Rei, Natsuo, and Fuyumi – arrived before Shoto and used their ice powers to gradually contain Dabi’s self-destruction. Ultimately, it was Shoto’s powerful Great Glacial Aegir technique that brought him under control. While his family assisted, Shoto effectively prevented a catastrophic explosion on his own, a feat considered one of the most remarkable in the series.
Phosphor / Great Glacial Aegir
The Culmination Of Shoto’s Lifelong Quirk Training
- Chapter 352 (Manga) Episode 146 (Anime)
Shoto Todoroki was born with an incredibly powerful ability: he could create and control both fire and ice. But he had trouble using both sides of his power at the same time and worked hard to overcome this. After months of intense training, he finally got to demonstrate his progress in a climactic battle against Dabi.
As Dabi’s flames grew more intense, Shoto countered with a technique he’d perfected – Flashfire Fist: Phosphor – which allowed him to create powerful “cold flames.” He then unleashed his ultimate attack, Great Glacial Aegir, a huge burst of cold fire that extinguished Dabi’s flames and froze him solid. Though Shoto used this move again later to stop Dabi from destroying himself, he needed help from his family that second time. The first time, he accomplished it all on his own, making that moment his most impressive feat in the entire My Hero Academia series.
