As a dedicated fan of My Hero Academia, I’ve had the immense pleasure of observing the lives of two remarkable families – the Bakugos and the Todorokis. The contrast between these two households is as stark as day and night, much like the quirks they possess.

When viewing “My Hero Academia,” it’s evident that the Todoroki and Bakugo clans have distinct characteristics. At first glance, the Bakugo household appears disorganized and boisterous, whereas the Todoroki family seems quieter and less accessible. Nevertheless, there are some similarities that bind these two families together.

Initially, Bakugo Katsuki might have seemed to possess a distorted personality throughout the series, but he grew up in a nurturing home with caring parents. This stands in stark contrast to Todoroki Shoto, who was born into wealth and privilege. Unlike Katsuki, whose birth was motivated by love, Shoto was conceived for a specific purpose. Let’s explore the variations and similarities between their families.

Katsuki Comes From a Marriage of Love

The Bakugo Family Found Love Naturally, While the Todoroki Family Marriage Was One of Convenience

My Hero Academia: The Difference Between the Bakugo and Todoroki Families

One initial distinction between the families of Bakugo and Todoroki lies in their affectionate dynamics: Katsuki came from a family that genuinely cherishes one another, while Shoto was born with an intent behind his conception. Mitsuki and Masaru developed feelings for each other at work. Smitten by Masaru, Mitsuki persistently courted him. Eventually, they tied the knot and had Katsuki together.

The Todoroki family is markedly distinct from the Bakugo family in several ways. Unlike Katsuki who is an only child, Shoto is one of four siblings in his family. A unique aspect of the Todoroki family is that they participate in Quirk marriages – these are arranged unions primarily for the purpose of passing on a specific Quirk to future offspring. Enji Todoroki specifically wanted a child with both fire and ice Quirks, which led him to try conceiving a child with both abilities. This effort resulted in four children: Touya who initially had a fire Quirk but later developed an ice one, Fuyumi and Natsuo who each have an ice Quirk, and finally Shoto who possesses both fire and ice Quirks.

Essentially, Katsuki originated from a bond between two loving companions who nurtured their relationship over time. In contrast, Shoto emerged from a family that overlooked him, with his father imposing his beliefs upon him relentlessly. Shoto had long been aware of the fact that he was brought into the world to outshine All Might, which in turn made his siblings feel unloved and ignored by their parents.

Shouto Has a Tragic and Abusive Past

Unlike Katsuki, Shoto’s Childhood Was Filled With Neglect & Abuse

My Hero Academia: The Difference Between the Bakugo and Todoroki Families

Growing up, I was blessed with a home filled with warmth from my two parents who doted on me, despite the fact that our household could occasionally get boisterous and dynamic. This upbringing allowed me to enjoy typical kid stuff, like hanging out with friends, running to the local store for treats and trinkets, and basically having the room to live a regular childhood life.

In the Todoroki family, Shoto wasn’t exactly blessed with good fortune. Upon his birth, it became evident that his father, Enji, had finally produced the child he had long desired. This special attention towards Shoto, however, came at a cost as Enji neglected his three other children to focus solely on training and nurturing Shoto’s unique fire and ice abilities. As a consequence, Shoto found himself distanced from his older siblings, which fostered feelings of resentment towards his father and a yearning for a normal life like his brothers and sisters. This isolation might explain why Shoto developed an aloof and reserved demeanor. It’s possible that this character trait was born out of limited interactions with other children during his younger years, making his awkwardness more pronounced in social situations.

This contrasts with Katsuki, who often led his ragtag group of friends in elementary and middle school. Katsuki was always at the forefront of any event, wanting to be the best and show off whenever possible. However, when Katsuki entered high school, he toned down his show-off personality. While he may not have had a little group of goons in the Hero High School, he still knew how to socialize. However, he actively chooses not to, as seen in many situations where he retreats to his room or dismisses social events.

Growing up, Katsuki had a solid foundation thanks to a great childhood and dreams for my future. On the other hand, Shoto was always encouraged to follow in his dad’s footsteps, aiming to surpass All Might and become the top Hero. At first, this was more about proving myself against my old man than it was about personal aspirations, but over time, I’ve come to genuinely pursue that dream as my own goal.

The Differences Between the Two Families

Fundamentally, These Two Families Are Polar Opposites

From a fan’s perspective, I’ve noticed that the dynamics within each family are quite distinct. The Bakugo household is full of noise and drama, yet it’s evident that they deeply cherish Katsuki’s well-being. On the other hand, the Todoroki clan maintains a more reserved demeanor, preferring solitude over social interaction. This could be due to Endeavor’s high-profile Hero career, which might lead them to seek privacy from intrusive reporters. Moreover, the Todorokis reside in a traditional Japanese dwelling, while the Bakugos call a modern home their own.

In the Bakugo household, Mitsuki typically assumes the role of the family leader, mirroring Katsuki’s fiery demeanor. Her husband, Masaru, is generally quiet and prefers solitude, often acting as a peacemaker between Mitsuki and their son, soothing arguments when they occur. Conversely, in the Todoroki household, Enji holds the reins of power, dictating decisions for his children and wife. Rei, Shoto’s mother, married Enji out of family obligation and has taken on a submissive role within their relationship. However, it is worth noting that Enji has demonstrated regret for his actions and intends to make amends for any wrongs committed against his family.

I take full responsibility. I swore to bear that burden… and live my life atoning for it all.

The unique trait that sets apart these two families is that Katsuki, with his unyielding ambition to be the foremost hero and outshine All Might, bears a strong resemblance to what Enji desired in a son. His relentless pursuit of excellence drives him to constantly hone his Quirk to reach unprecedented heights. The extraordinary combination of Mitsuki’s Glycerin Quirk and Masaru’s Acid Sweat Quirk led to Katsuki inheriting an exceptional Explosion Quirk, derived from nitroglycerin.

In an ideal world, Enji might have desired a situation where a child was born swiftly, inheriting traits from both his quirks. But Shoto was already Enji’s fourth child, and his eagerness to secure the top position was rapidly dwindling. To sum it up, though the Bakugo household can appear chaotic, noisy, and volatile, they genuinely care for each other. Conversely, the Todoroki family, who seem to be at the pinnacle of society, are characterized by neglect and abuse within their home.
