The My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime offers a great chance to really delve into the world of quirks and heroes. While we’ve seen the top heroes like All Might and Endeavor, this series can offer something new by focusing on the everyday realities of being a pro hero, particularly for those working at the street level. We’re used to seeing Deku and All Might fight major villains, but it’s also important to explore the stories of the heroes who work more locally, like the everyday heroes who keep the streets safe.
The My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime explores a darker side of pro hero retirement. While the main My Hero Academia series has shown heroes retiring due to injury or disgrace, Vigilantes delves deeper into the complications. The show highlights how past grudges and the need to protect secret identities can continue to affect heroes even after they retire. As seen with characters like O’Clock, leaving the hero life doesn’t necessarily solve problems – it often just creates new ones.
MHA: Vigilantes is About Street-Level Heroes, Not Epic Legends
The Anime’s Humble Characters Are More Relatable Than All Might or Shoto

Many action-packed anime series focus on incredibly powerful heroes who change the world. For example, Naruto highlighted epic battles between characters like Naruto, Sasuke, Madara, and Kaguya, all connected to the Otsutsuki clan. Bleach followed a similar pattern with Ichigo, Uryu, and Yhwach. More recently, My Hero Academia gave limited attention to smaller-scale heroes like Gran Torino, prioritizing characters who seemed destined to survive anything, such as Deku and Endeavor. While there’s a reason these shows prioritize these powerful figures, it might be time to shift that focus.
I’ve noticed the main My Hero Academia anime has really leaned into these huge, world-altering conflicts, and honestly, the franchise feels a bit overloaded. That’s why I think the Vigilantes anime is smart to do the opposite. It’s a good reminder that bigger isn’t always better. Focusing on a smaller scale allows Vigilantes to feel new and interesting without needing massive stakes, and it really suits stories about everyday heroes. For example, a recent episode showed what happens when these heroes try to retire – it’s not all glamour and gold watches, and it highlights the real struggles they face after hanging up their costumes.
Retirement can actually be harder for many street-level heroes than for more famous ones. As characters like Eraserhead have pointed out, these heroes often make enemies while fighting crime, and those grudges don’t simply vanish when they stop working. They continue to face threats, but lose the support systems they had while active – things like sidekicks or official protection. Because they’re often the ones delivering the most impactful blows, criminals especially remember them, making retired heroes prime targets. This often forces them to disappear from public life, hoping their old enemies won’t find them and seek revenge.
It feels a little rough, and likely is for many heroes when they retire, but that’s just the way it is for those of us working the streets – both when we start and when we finish. Right now, we’re not seeing heroes fade into quiet retirement, and that’s okay. The story, like with Eraserhead’s suspicions about O’Clock’s past catching up to him, doesn’t need to show everything. This world is huge, and the anime can’t cover every detail. Luckily, we already understand the basics of how heroes work, so the show can hint at things and let us, the viewers, fill in the rest. It actually makes the experience richer that way.
Dangerous Retirements Are a Warning to Brutal Pro Heroes
Pro Heroes Must Show Restraint So They Don’t Make Too Many Enemies

It’s unsettling to think about everyday heroes having to worry about threats even after they retire. All heroes, whether they’re dealing with small crimes or major threats, are simply trying to keep people safe. Sometimes, that means fighting back against dangerous villains. While it’s wonderful when heroes can resolve conflicts peacefully, sometimes force is necessary – especially when criminals refuse to surrender. It’s heartbreaking to imagine dedicated heroes living in fear, even during their well-deserved retirement.
However, some vigilantes might use too much force and create so many enemies that they have to worry about revenge even after they retire. It’s inevitable that some criminals will hold a grudge against a professional hero and seek payback. But a hero can minimize this risk by always acting with mercy and protecting people. This can be difficult, especially if a hero’s power doesn’t allow for easy, non-lethal capture, unlike heroes with Quirks like Tape or Somnambulist.
Ultimately, pro heroes are accountable for their choices. If a hero consistently uses excessive force instead of finding smarter solutions, they risk fading into obscurity when they can no longer continue. While villains bear the most responsibility, heroes who rely too much on force need to recognize their contribution to the problem. Knuckleduster is a prime example; he’s likely made a lot of enemies, including many minor criminals seeking revenge.
Unlike villains focused on revenge, heroes like Deku and Koichi Haimawari are able to manage their grudges. This is why Gentle Criminal was able to turn away from fighting and be redeemed when given a second chance. Local heroes can only hope to both win the day and inspire even those they once fought with kindness.
