Blackbeard initially joined the Whitebeard Pirates as a user of the Yami Yami no Mi, a Devil Fruit that grants the power of darkness and negates the abilities of other Devil Fruit users. However, he deceived them for over 25 years before betraying them to steal it. The reason for his association with the Whitebeard Pirates was actually this very fruit. Yet, Blackbeard coveted more than just the Yami Yami no Mi; he also desired the Gura Gura no Mi. At Marineford, working in tandem with eight of his crew members, he orchestrated a coordinated assassination. With the Whitebeard Pirate Captain’s body covered by a tarp, Blackbeard concealed himself under it and emerged with the powers of the Gura Gura no Mi, adding the most potent Paramecia attack – earthquakes – to his repertoire.
Eating a second Devil Fruit is almost always deadly, but Blackbeard appears to possess two. Marco, once part of Teach’s crew, offers an explanation. He suggests that Blackbeard’s unusual physique could be the reason, and speculates that other members of the Whitebeard Pirates might know about this unique body structure.
4 How Can The Blackbeard Pirates Steal Devil Fruit Powers?
It Seems Totally Unnatural
Blackbeard’s swipe of Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit was merely the beginning of a much larger story. Typically, Devil Fruits resurface after their users perish. Users from times past have exhibited powers similar to those seen today, though this is often a mere coincidence. But the way the Blackbeard Pirates acquire Devil Fruit abilities deviates significantly from the norm.
In some instances, the desired power is currently held by someone else, leading them to eliminate that individual in order to claim the power directly. Characters like Blackbeard specifically sought out powerful Devil Fruit bearers, such as Law and Hancock. Notably, Shiryu obtained the Clear-Clear Fruit after killing Absalom, a former user from Thriller Bark. The exact means by which this is accomplished remains vague, as it has only been depicted once on screen and even then was hidden under a tarp. With most, if not all, of the main crew members now possessing Devil Fruit abilities, it remains uncertain whether they will continue to target Devil Fruit users with the same intensity.
3 What Is Blackbeard’s Connection To Xebec?
His Primary Ship Hints At Some Form of Acknowledgment
Rock D. Xebec, infamously known as a brutal pirate, is believed to have held immense power, though his name has mostly faded from history due to the horrific acts attributed to him. He was renowned for uncovering secrets that the World Government sought to keep hidden and aspired to rule over the entire world. It required the united forces of Monkey D. Garp and Gol D. Roger to vanquish him. His crew, which included future powerhouses such as Kaido, Big Mom, and others, were prominent figures in their own right. However, many of his former associates did not seem to hold fond memories of Xebec or their time serving under him.
The pirate ship favored by Marshall D. Teach, known as Saber of Xebec, appears to be a tribute to an obscure pirate. It’s uncertain why he chose this name, but given his interest in history and the fact that Teach enjoys researching it as a hobby, it’s possible he learned about Xebec. Interestingly, a “xebec” was also a type of Mediterranean ship often used by pirates, which could explain the connection. However, naming the ship Saber of Xebec suggests a link to the pirate who is depicted wielding a single sword in flashbacks. It’s worth mentioning that Xebec was once the captain of Whitebeard, Teach’s own former captain. Whether this is just a coincidence or there’s more to it remains unclear. However, considering he fought with a former crewmate of Rocks to take control over Hachinosu, the naming of the ship seems to have deeper significance than simple chance.
2 What Really Happened At Rocky Port?
The Mid-Timeskip Incident is Connected to Many Characters
The Rocky Port Incident was a significant event that transpired during the gap in time, shaping the subsequent perceptions of certain characters. Trafalgar D. Water Law was found guilty of this incident. Notably, he amassed 100 Pirate Hearts during this period, which helped him ascend to the position of a Warlord prior to the Punk Hazard Arc. Additionally, Koby is renowned for his heroism, as he safeguarded citizens during this very incident, earning him widespread admiration.
Teach used the incident to take over Hachinosu, the island that currently serves as his home base. He defeated Ochoku, a former crewmate of Rocks D. Xebec, in order to gain control. He further claims he had help from Koby, which was presumably inadvertent, while accomplishing this task. Despite this incident being deeply connected to the greater lore of various characters, exactly what happened during it is still unclear beyond these bits of information.

He Does Carry the Will of the D
As I, a character in this captivating narrative, am recognized as hailing from an exceptional lineage, this fact became evident during a conversation between Jaygarcia Saturn, one of the Five Elders, and Catarina Devon, one of Blackbeard’s Ten Titanic Captains. The specifics regarding my unique lineage remain somewhat elusive. I am part of a gradually expanding group of characters who share the “D” initial, but it remains uncertain if this was the exact aspect that Jaygarcia and Catarina were discussing.
In a less frequent occurrence compared to other peculiarities associated with Blackbeard, the letter “D” appears more prevalent. Notably, this letter is significant as it signifies an unusual lineage traced back to an adversary of the First Twenty Kingdoms, who established the World Government. Over time, this mark has been inherited not only by direct descendants but also by allies of this influential figure. For instance, Nefertari D. Lili’s lineage, including Cobra and Vivi, secretly bear this “D” as part of their names.
If his ancestry doesn’t link back to the “D”, it might be related to the peculiarities of his physique instead.
