It’s expected that he will return at some point, but there’s no pressing need for Oda to kill him off in the storyline as of now.

In other words, if he perishes in the narrative, it’d be quite late in the game for Nami to acquire a sudden power boost then. Given the circumstances, it wouldn’t serve much purpose. However, it would be intriguing to see one of the Straw Hats obtaining a Logia ability since, up until now, only Paramecia and Zoans have been featured in the series.
