Naruto: 6 Times Sasuke One-Upped Naruto

I’ve been watching Naruto for ages, and honestly, the dynamic between Naruto and Sasuke is just incredible! They were at each other’s throats practically from the start – it wasn’t just playful teasing, either. Their conflicts went from small squabbles to seriously dangerous battles. But it’s because of all that friction, all those disagreements, that they evolved. They went from being rivals who couldn’t stand each other, to eventually becoming the best of friends. It’s such a powerful arc!

Before becoming Hokage, Naruto wasn’t a very skilled ninja – he was actually quite inexperienced. He constantly worked to improve and keep up with Sasuke, who was considered the best for a long time. Although Naruto eventually won the overall war, Sasuke excelled in certain individual fights.

During Their Entire Academy Days

From the start of their ninja training, Sasuke and Naruto were complete opposites. Sasuke excelled at everything, quickly mastering techniques while remaining calm and collected. He was naturally talented and understood how to be a ninja, earning the respect of teachers and admiration of his classmates. Naruto, however, struggled with even simple exercises, like the Shadow Clone Jutsu, and was often seen as a disruptive student who fell behind.

This difference in skill was central to their rivalry. Naruto aimed to become Hokage, but he looked up to Sasuke and wanted to reach his level. Initially, Sasuke was far ahead – not just a little, but significantly more skilled. He set the standard for Naruto and was the first, and most important, person Naruto tried to surpass.

Battle Against the Demon Brothers

When Kakashi’s Team 7 first started working together, their early missions were pretty basic – mostly simple things like finding lost animals. However, when they finally received a real ninja mission, Naruto struggled, while Sasuke impressed everyone with his abilities.

Their assignment was to escort an architect safely to the Land of Waves. Though it seemed like an easy job, the Demon Brothers immediately threatened their mission with a surprise attack on Kakashi, briefly knocking him down. This gave them a chance to attack Naruto, who was caught off guard. Luckily, Sasuke reacted quickly and saved him. Sasuke could have continued the fight, but Kakashi swiftly defeated the assassins.

Ninjutsu and Chakra Control

While both Sasuke and Naruto became Genin around the same age, Sasuke was consistently more skilled. Even though Sakura had better chakra control than both of them, Sasuke was still more proficient than Naruto. He progressed much faster when they were learning to control chakra with their feet, despite both eventually succeeding.

Sasuke is noticeably more skilled than Naruto when it comes to ninjutsu. Even before unlocking the full potential of his Sharingan, Sasuke demonstrated impressive control over fire-style techniques. He also learned the difficult Chidori relatively quickly with Kakashi’s training, well before Naruto was able to master the Rasengan.

During the Chunin Exams

Many fans consider the Chunin Exams Arc to be one of the best in the series. This is largely because it’s when we first meet ninjas from other villages, and see the young ninja of Konoha really put to the test. While both Naruto and Sasuke were already skilled Genin at this point, Sasuke consistently performed better. For example, during the written exam, Sasuke quickly understood what Ibiki was looking for – that the test involved using their ninja skills to cheat. Naruto, however, struggled with both the questions and figuring out the test’s trick, only passing thanks to a stroke of luck.

Both Naruto and Sasuke were victorious in their individual battles. However, Sasuke clearly demonstrated a higher level of skill. Unlike Naruto, he didn’t just depend on raw power or chance to win; even the experienced Jonin Genma Shiranui observed that Sasuke was fighting at a Chunin-level already.

The First Valley of the End Battle

The battle between Naruto and Sasuke at the Valley of the End was the peak of their long-standing rivalry, and Sasuke ultimately won. Naruto fought with everything he had, fueled by his desire to save Sasuke and the immense power of the Nine Tails. Sasuke matched him, using the power of his curse mark. But while both pushed themselves to their limits, Sasuke fought with a ruthless determination, prioritizing power above all else and fully intending to defeat Naruto.

The clash between Naruto’s Rasengan and Sasuke’s Chidori definitively showed that both were at their peak strength before the time skip. When the dust cleared, it was obvious that Sasuke had surpassed Naruto at that moment.

Orochimaru’s Hideout Reunion

After training for two and a half years, Naruto had become significantly stronger, perfectly controlling his Shadow Clone and Rasengan techniques. His top priority was reuniting with his friend Sasuke and bringing him back to the Hidden Leaf Village. To help with this, he formed a new Team 7 with Sakura, Sai, and Yamato.

When we finally reached Orochimaru’s hideout, things didn’t go as planned. We managed to get past Kabuto and even Orochimaru himself, but Sasuke hadn’t changed his mind at all. He actually fought us! He showed off just how much stronger he’d become during his training, and it was a significant jump in power. He held off all four of us single-handedly, looking incredibly composed while doing it. The fight only ended when Orochimaru stepped in, but honestly, Sasuke clearly won that round.
