The Rinnegan is an incredibly powerful visual ability in the world of Naruto, granting users god-like powers that are far beyond what the Sharingan and Byakugan can do. The creator of Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto, designed it to be very rare, and only a few characters ever awaken it throughout the series. Even among those who do, the level of control varies greatly, with some users being much more skilled than others.
7. Nagato Uzumaki
The first character Kishimoto showed with the Rinnegan in the Naruto series was Nagato Uzumaki. Though he appeared to be born with the powerful eye, it was actually implanted in him at birth – it originally belonged to Madara Uchiha. Because of his Uzumaki heritage, Nagato could skillfully use and eventually fully master the Rinnegan’s abilities, leading him to become the leader of the Akatsuki.
Nagato was the creator of the Six Paths of Pain and possessed incredible mastery over the Rinnegan. He could perform feats like summoning the Outer Path statue and reviving numerous people, thanks to his vast chakra. Nagato’s power exceeded even that of skilled shinobi like Itachi Uchiha – he was strong enough to potentially overwhelm both Nine-Tails empowered Naruto and Killer Bee simultaneously. However, his physical disability significantly hindered his full potential. Despite this, Nagato remains renowned as one of the most powerful Rinnegan users ever.
6. Ten Tails
The Ten-Tails is a powerful, legendary creature from the Naruto series and a key player in the Fourth Great Ninja War. It’s created when all nine Tailed Beasts are collected inside the Gedo Statue, and is considered strong enough to destroy the world. The Ten-Tails also possesses a Rinnegan eye, which greatly enhances its already immense power, though it doesn’t actively use the eye’s abilities.
The Ten Tails was incredibly powerful – so much so that the entire Shinobi Alliance had a hard time matching its strength. It could have easily destroyed them multiple times, proving just how dangerous it was.
The full potential of the Ten-Tails’ Rinnegan can only be unlocked by becoming its host. When Madara became the host, his Rinnegan became much more powerful. By absorbing the God Tree, he evolved his Rinnegan into the Rinne Sharingan, which appeared on his forehead and allowed him to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
5. Obito Uchiha
Similar to Nagato, Obito Uchiha also obtained the Rinnegan. After Nagato Uzumaki’s death, Obito took his Rinnegan. But unlike Nagato, Obito couldn’t manage the power of both Rinnegan simultaneously – it was too overwhelming. Therefore, he chose to use only one, keeping the other one safely stored away.
Obito used his Rinnegan to create a powerful force similar to the Six Paths of Pain, imprisoning the Tailed Beasts within it and causing widespread destruction during battles. He could also summon a massive statue and use special chains to restrain even the strongest Tailed Beasts. While not a master of the Rinnegan, it significantly boosted his power, allowing him to fight against incredibly strong opponents.

4. Momoshiki Otsutsuki
Momoshiki Otsutsuki was a strong opponent, but his use of the Rinnegan wasn’t particularly remarkable. Instead of having the Rinnegan in his eyes like most people, he had them in his palms. He possessed two of these palm-Rinnegan, each with a unique ability: one allowed him to absorb any attack, while the other let him release that attack with greatly increased power.
Momoshiki was a powerful fighter, but he didn’t seem to fully understand or utilize the advanced abilities of his Rinnegan, specifically the powers of the Six Paths. Also, his strength was significantly boosted by fusing with Kinshiki; before that, he wasn’t particularly impressive.
3. Madara Uchiha
Madara Uchiha was the first ninja to unlock the Rinnegan’s power. He achieved this after his last fight with Hashirama Senju, where he actually bit off a piece of Hashirama and absorbed it into himself. This unusual act combined the chakra of Indra and Asura within him, leading to the development of the powerful eye as he neared death. After being revived, Madara fully regained his Rinnegan and displayed abilities that few could match, even surpassing Hashirama’s strength once his eyes were restored.
Madara’s powerful dojutsu granted him access to the abilities of the Six Paths. He further enhanced this with Limbo Hengoku, a unique skill that let him create four invisible clones from another dimension. It’s clear Madara was incredibly skilled with this eye technique.
2. Sasuke Uchiha
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Sasuke Uchiha received the Rinnegan after an encounter with Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths. Hagoromo shared half of his chakra with Sasuke, which transformed one of Sasuke’s Mangekyou Sharingan into the incredibly powerful Rinnegan. This awakening granted Sasuke immense strength, allowing him to fight on equal footing with someone as formidable as Six Paths Madara. He ultimately became strong enough to defeat Madara decisively.
Sasuke also learned Amenotejikara, a powerful technique that let him instantly swap positions with anything nearby – even himself. Combined with the powers he received from the Six Paths, Sasuke was a truly formidable and nearly unbeatable opponent at his peak.
1. Hagoromo Otsutsuki
Throughout the Naruto series, Hagoromo Otsutsuki, also known as the Sage of Six Paths, is clearly the most powerful user of the Rinnegan. Born as the son of Kaguya, he naturally possessed this incredible eye. What made his Rinnegan unique was that it was the only dojutsu officially classified as a Kekei Mora. Hagoromo could effortlessly wield all Six Paths techniques, and even the Seventh, but his most notable ability was likely the Creation of All Things, a power directly linked to his Rinnegan.
Hagoromo possessed incredible power, allowing him to create anything he imagined and then bring it to life – effectively making him like a god. His power seemed limitless, and though the full extent of his strength remains unknown, it’s clear he would have been an overwhelmingly powerful opponent in a fight.
