Naruto Uzumaki, the main character of his anime series, achieved many significant wins throughout the Naruto story. He famously defeated the Six Paths of Pain during the best arc of Naruto Shippuden, and his Rasenshuriken proved powerful enough to defeat the seemingly invincible Kakuzu. He also contributed to Kabuto Yakushi’s early defeat and fought Gaara to a standstill during the Konoha Crush mission. However, not all major victories were solely due to Naruto’s efforts.
With so many villains in the Naruto anime, it’s not surprising that other heroes—and even some villains—stepped up to help defeat them. While Naruto is powerful, he couldn’t handle everything himself, even with his shadow clones. Some of the most satisfying villain defeats actually happened when characters like Shikamaru, Hiruzen Sarutobi, Sakura, and Sasuke took the lead.
Kisame Hoshigaki Took His Own Life to Protect His Intel
Even Naruto Would Be Hard-Pressed to Defeat Kisame For Good

Several members of the Akatsuki were defeated by enemies other than Naruto, or they took their own lives. This includes Kisame Hoshigaki, a powerful fighter with a shark-like appearance, who didn’t have much direct interaction with Naruto. Kisame battled strong opponents like Kakashi and Might Guy and performed well in those fights. Ultimately, when faced with inescapable defeat, he was forced to make a difficult decision.
Kisame possessed crucial information about the Akatsuki, and like a dedicated ninja, he valued protecting that information more than his own life. This mirrored the themes of early Naruto episodes, which emphasized self-sacrifice, gathering intelligence, and operating in secret as core ninja principles. True to the way someone like Ibiki Morino would act, Kisame preferred to die rather than reveal his secrets, leading him to use his water sharks to destroy himself.
Itachi Uchiha Allowed Himself to Die While Battling His Beloved Brother
Itachi’s Death Led to the Truth of His Strange Life

Among the most important members of the Akatsuki were three individuals from the Uchiha clan, including the popular Itachi. He was an early member, immediately captivating audiences with his cool and enigmatic personality. While he initially pursued Naruto as part of his Akatsuki duties, Itachi’s primary concern was actually his relationship with his brother.
Naruto wasn’t strong enough to beat Itachi in their fights, leaving Sasuke to face him. The brothers had a legendary, deadly battle using their Mangekyo Sharingan, but Sasuke surprisingly stopped short of killing Itachi. While Sasuke might not have won in a straight fight, Itachi ultimately chose to die. Following his death, Itachi entrusted his ideals to Sasuke, but Sasuke, manipulated by Obito, corrupted that legacy into something terrible.
Orochimaru Met His End When He Tried to Absorb Sasuke
Orochimaru’s Death Felt a Little Ironic
Image via Pierrot. In many action stories, the hero and villain develop a strong rivalry and even respect each other. However, this isn’t always the case. For example, the villain Orochimaru wasn’t particularly interested in Naruto, but he was very focused on Sasuke. Orochimaru desperately wanted the Sharingan eyes, and he was determined to obtain them, even if it meant taking them from Sasuke instead of Itachi.
Orochimaru’s obsession with obtaining the Sharingan ultimately led to his defeat, and some might see this as the Uchiha clan being unusually protected by the story. He mistakenly believed he could enhance Sasuke’s power and then take him over, but Sasuke wouldn’t allow that. Instead, the tables turned, and Sasuke ended up absorbing Orochimaru, ironically making himself even more powerful.
Deidara is One of Sasuke’s Many Victims in Shippuden
Deidara Chose Destruction Over Defeat at Sasuke’s Hands
Image via Pierrot. Deidara, a powerful member of the Akatsuki, didn’t have many direct encounters with Naruto. He first gained attention by capturing Gaara from the Hidden Sand Village, and later, like other Akatsuki members, he fought Sasuke. Deidara believed his unique abilities would give him the edge, but Sasuke’s techniques proved to be too powerful.
Deidara, like many villains, ultimately chose death, but his reasons differed from Itachi’s. While Itachi acted on personal convictions, Deidara was motivated by pure spite – he desperately wanted to destroy Sasuke. Though he detonated himself in a massive explosion, Sasuke lived because Manda sacrificed herself. This reinforces the idea that Sasuke is protected by plot armor and that no matter how determined a villain is, they can’t defeat Naruto’s close friend.
Hidan Was Dealt With Once Shikamaru Got Revenge
No One Will Find What’s Left of Hidan
image via Pierrot. Man, watching Naruto fight was incredible! He totally took out half of the Akatsuki’s ‘immortal duo’ with his new Rasenshuriken – it was amazing! But honestly, it was a good thing Naruto didn’t finish both of them. Shikamaru really needed to be the one to deal with Hidan, you see. Hidan was the one who killed Asuma, Shikamaru’s sensei, and Shikamaru was determined to get revenge – he deserved that chance, and it would have bothered him if Naruto had stolen it.
Shikamaru was able to defeat the immortal Hidan by using his skillful strategies and ninja techniques. It was especially rewarding to see his clever plans work, as he was fighting to avenge Asuma’s death.
Sasori Couldn’t Stand Up to the Power of Sakura’s Fists
Sasori Even Gave Sakura a Generous Parting Gift
image via Pierrot. Naruto, as the host of a powerful beast, was a prime target for the Akatsuki group, but surprisingly, he didn’t battle most of its members himself. Other heroes stepped up to fight them instead. While Naruto was searching for Gaara, Sakura had the opportunity to prove herself in battle, teaming up with Chiyo to defeat Sasori.
Sakura Haruno and Chiyo deserve all the credit for their fight against the incredibly skilled puppet master inside the cave. It was a tough battle, but Sakura ultimately won through her determination and power. Surprisingly, Sasori decided to share information with Sakura about Orochimaru’s upcoming meeting, likely to move the story forward and make Sakura’s win even more meaningful.
Konan Died as a Redeemed Hero When Fighting Tobi
Konan Gave Her Life For Naruto’s and Jiraiya’s Cause
Image via Pierrot. Like many members of the Akatsuki, Konan didn’t actually battle Naruto or suffer a defeat. Instead, she was moved by Naruto’s heartfelt words after Pain was defeated – he convinced both Nagato and her to believe in a better future. It was a unique moment, as Konan was one of the few Akatsuki members who rediscovered their compassion and hope.
Sadly, Konan’s time after deciding to help the Allied Forces was short-lived. By switching sides, she became a target for Obito, and ultimately couldn’t defeat him. Though she fought bravely, she died hoping Naruto would carry on the dream of her teacher, Jiraiya.
Madara Uchiha Got a Nasty Surprise When Black Zetsu Made a Move
It’s Uncertain if Naruto Could Have Defeated Madara at All
Image via Pierrot. Naruto managed to defeat and help Obito Uchiha, who was disguised as Madara, but the real Madara Uchiha was a much greater threat. Driven by a long-held grudge and incredibly powerful, Madara could take on entire armies by himself, and Naruto knew he couldn’t reason with him. This meant another battle against an Uchiha to save the world, but this fight was unlike anything he’d experienced with Sasuke or Obito.
Naruto and his team fought incredibly hard, but their chance of winning disappeared when Black Zetsu intervened at the very end. This led to the unexpected arrival of Kaguya Otsutsuki, who easily defeated Madara, meaning Naruto never actually beat him. Considering Madara’s immense strength, it’s possible Naruto never had a real chance of winning against him.
