Because Naruto features many incredibly strong characters, it’s filled with a wide range of powerful abilities. However, the creator, Masashi Kishimoto, generally avoided making characters overwhelmingly powerful. For a long time, the Rinnegan was considered the most unique and rare ability in the series Naruto.

Dojutsu, a special visual ability, originated with the Sage of Six Paths, and legends claimed anyone possessing these eyes had the potential to reshape the world. While more Rinnegan users emerged over time, making the ability less rare, its incredible power remained unchanged.

The Rinnegan Is One Of The Strongest Dojutsu In Naruto

The Rinnegan, a powerful eye technique, is incredibly difficult to obtain. One way to achieve it is by combining the powers of Indra and Asura Otsutsuki, something only Madara Uchiha has successfully done. He accomplished this by transplanting Hashirama’s cells – containing Asura’s power – into his own body, which already held Indra’s power. However, the Rinnegan didn’t activate for Madara until many years later. Alternatively, a user of the Sharingan can gain the Rinnegan by receiving chakra directly from Hagoromo Otsutsuki. Given how challenging it is to unlock, it’s understandable why the Rinnegan is such a formidable Dojutsu.

In the anime Naruto, the Rinnegan is considered one of the three most powerful eye techniques, and is generally the strongest. It gives the user access to a wide range of abilities known as the Six Paths Technique, which include:

  • Deva Path: Being able to control forces of attraction and repulsion
  • Asura Path: Altering one’s body with mechanical parts
  • Human Path: Extracting souls from the bodies of other people
  • Preta Path: Absorbing chakra
  • Naraka Path: Complete access to the King of Hell
  • Animal Path: Summoning all kinds of creatures

Kishimoto Introduced A Lot Of Rinnegan Users

Each of the Rinnegan’s abilities is incredibly strong, and someone who fully learns to use them is extremely difficult to defeat in a fight.

By the end of the Naruto series, only three characters possessed the powerful Rinnegan: Hagoromo Otsutsuki, Madara Uchiha, and Sasuke Uchiha. However, the Boruto series introduced many more Rinnegan users, making this special eye technique less rare.

Boruto’s Jougan Is Rarer Than The Rinnegan

Many fans consider Boruto Uzumaki’s Jougan to be the most powerful skill in the series. This unique ability comes from the Otsutsuki Clan, and so far, Boruto is the only one who’s shown it. He first discovered the Jougan while at the Academy, but it took years of practice for him to fully master it.

The Jougan was a crucial skill for Boruto because it granted him several impressive powers. It allowed him to see an opponent’s chakra pathways, letting him follow them by their unique chakra signature. Beyond that, the Jougan enabled him to create portals, essentially giving him access to space-time ninjutsu. It also helped him predict an enemy’s moves, allowing him to prepare a defense, and even identify their weaknesses for a direct attack.

Kokugan Is Another Extraordinary Ability

Besides the Jougan, the Kokugan is an even rarer ability, once possessed by Isshiki Otsutuki. This unique Kekkei Genkai grants access to two powerful techniques: Sukunahikona and Daikokuten. Sukunahikona allows the user to shrink themselves or objects, ideal for surprise attacks, and then return them to their normal size. While the concept is straightforward, mastering the technique is difficult, as demonstrated by Isshiki’s battle against Naruto and Sasuke. Even with their extensive experience fighting powerful foes, it took Naruto and Sasuke considerable effort to understand how Isshiki’s ability worked.

Kokugan Has Another Overpowered Ability

Daikokuten is a technique that lets users store shrunken objects—like a hostage—in a separate dimension where time stands still. The Kokugan can also summon black cubes to confuse opponents by messing with their senses. Beyond that, they can create portals to access this timeless dimension.
