The Akatsuki, a group from the anime Naruto, were infamous and powerful rogue ninja gathered from around the world. While their members changed over time, they all shared the same ambitious goal: to bring peace to the world, even if it meant using extreme methods.
The Akatsuki group during the Naruto series was arguably the strongest in the entire story, filled with incredibly powerful ninja. Sadly, each member eventually met their end in different ways. Let’s take a look at how each of them died.
Deidara Killed Himself In An Attempt To Defeat Sasuke
The Explosions Master
Deidara was a highly dangerous member of the Akatsuki, known for his powerful explosive abilities, which allowed him to defeat opponents like Gaara and Isobu. He ultimately died fighting Sasuke, attempting to destroy them both with a massive, self-destructive explosion. Despite the force of the blast, Sasuke survived.
Sasori’s Fight Against Chiyo Saw His End
The Puppet Master
Sasori was an exceptionally strong and threatening member of the Akatsuki, famous for defeating and killing the Third Kazekage and becoming a key figure during the Third Shinobi World War. He was ultimately defeated by his grandmother, Chiyo, who skillfully used puppet techniques to pierce his vital organs, though some think he secretly allowed her to win.
Hidan May Still Be Alive Somewhere Under A Pile Of Rubble
The Immortal Man
Hidan was an immortal member of the Akatsuki because of his extreme devotion to his god, Jashin. He was a ruthless killer who believed his faith required him to take lives, leading him to murder both ordinary people and powerful warriors. Though defeated by Shikamaru – who blew his body apart and buried him under rocks – Hidan technically remained alive. However, because of his unique biology and need to feed, it’s generally accepted that he eventually perished.
Kakuzu Was Defeated By Naruto And Kakashi
Another Immortal Man
Kakuzu was a powerful member of the Akatsuki, and like Hidan, couldn’t be killed easily. However, Kakuzu achieved this through a unique method: he collected the hearts of those he defeated to extend his life, often needing to do so because of his quick temper. Ultimately, Naruto and Kakashi worked together to defeat him. Naruto’s Rasenshuriken damaged many of his hearts on a cellular level, and Kakashi finished him off with his Chidori.
Juzo Heroically Used Himself To Save Itachi
A Swordsman
Juzo wasn’t as well-known as some members of the Akatsuki, largely because he died early in the group’s existence. Though a highly skilled swordsman, he was killed during a battle with Yagura. He tried to block Yagura’s powerful attack with his sword, but the sword unexpectedly turned and fatally pierced him.

Kisame Killed Himself To Protect The Akatsuki’s Secrets
A Legendary Swordsman
Kisame was an incredibly powerful and famous swordsman in the Naruto series, and few opponents could beat him. After Might Guy defeated him, rather than reveal the secrets of the Akatsuki organization to his captors, Kisame chose to commit suicide. He did this by summoning sharks that consumed him alive.
Itachi Was Always Dying From A Mysterious Illness
The Legendary Shinobi
Itachi is a fan-favorite character, and much of what happens in the story is revealed to be part of his careful planning. However, he also battled a serious, life-threatening illness throughout his life. He ultimately died during his final fight with Sasuke, succumbing to both the disease and his battle wounds. Before passing, he made sure to explain everything to his brother.
Konan Died After A Fierce Battle With Tobi
The Paper Woman
Konan was a loyal and essential partner to Pain (Nagato) from the very beginning. She fought bravely against Tobi, trying to protect Nagato and his powerful Rinnegan, but ultimately lost her life. Though she fought well, Tobi was simply too strong.
Nagato Died Willingly After Submitting His Life To Naruto
The Leader of the Akatsuki
The Akatsuki organization was secretly controlled by Nagato, who used Pain as a front. After Naruto defeated all of Pain’s bodies, he confronted Nagato and managed to reach him, helping him realize the flaws in his beliefs. Nagato, now understanding his mistakes, then used the last of his energy to bring back to life everyone he had unintentionally killed, a selfless act that cost him his own life.
Obito Also Redeemed Himself At The End Of His Life
The Master Planner
A major surprise came when Tobi was unmasked as Obito Uchiha, the hidden mastermind behind the Akatsuki and a formidable enemy. Despite his villainous past, Obito found redemption during the final battle against Kaguya. He bravely sacrificed himself to protect Naruto and Kakashi, stepping in front of a powerful attack meant for them.
Zetsu Met His End When Kaguya Was Finally Defeated
The Real Master Planner
Zetsu was working on a long-term plan to bring his mother, Kaguya, back to life. He was actually a piece of her own being, a way for her to protect herself and ensure her eventual return. Ultimately, Zetsu wasn’t destroyed; he was sealed away alongside Kaguya after Naruto and Sasuke defeated her.
