Sakura Haruno is a main character in Naruto, but she often divides fans. While initially seen as one of the least popular characters, she’s gained some supporters over time. However, opinions about her remain strongly divided, and many readers still don’t care for her.

I always thought Sakura’s story in Naruto was actually pretty compelling, even if it didn’t quite unfold how a lot of fans expected. What’s undeniable, though, is how strong she became in Naruto Shippuden, particularly during the Fourth Shinobi World War. People still argue about whether her development was handled well, and that’s fair enough. But to really understand her journey, let’s look at who she was before the war, and how she changed afterward.

Was Sakura Weak Before Naruto Shippuden?

As a long-time fan, I remember how things were before Naruto Shippuden – everyone was less powerful overall, but Sakura Haruno really caught a lot of flak! She was always super smart, but it felt like her skills were mostly book smarts, not things that really helped in a fight. Even though she had amazing chakra control for her age, she just wasn’t very strong in a battle and constantly needed rescuing. It was frustrating to watch, honestly!

Sakura wasn’t a strong fighter, and her story mainly revolved around her feelings for Sasuke and her competition with Ino. Many viewers also disliked her because she often treated Naruto poorly, despite his obvious affection for her.

Around the middle of the original Naruto series, things started to shift for Sakura. While many fans expected her to learn and become skilled in genjutsu due to her excellent chakra control, she chose a different direction. In Episode 141 (and Chapter 236 of the manga), Sakura asks Tsunade to train her, and Tsunade agrees, marking a new focus for Sakura’s training.

What Happened to Sakura During the War

At the start of Naruto Shippuden, Sakura continues her training with Tsunade, and her growing abilities as a medical ninja are showcased in her battle against Sasori, which she and Granny Chiyo win early on. Throughout the series, Sakura becomes a more and more vital medical ninja, ultimately leading the entire medical team.

Sakura reaches her full potential during the Fourth Shinobi World War when she learns the Byakugo Seal, a powerful and ancient technique demanding incredible chakra control. This seal works by storing a large amount of chakra in one place on the body – often the forehead – and then releasing it during combat, particularly for difficult or draining attacks. Before Sakura, only Tsunade had mastered this technique, having spent years perfecting it.

I’m seriously amazed by Sakura’s abilities! Thanks to the Byakugo Seal, she can use Creation Rebirth – it’s the ultimate medical technique, and honestly, the most powerful thing Tsunade ever learned. It’s incredible because it basically rebuilds your body at a cellular level, making you super durable as long as you have the chakra to fuel it. The downside is it does take years off your life, but still! During the war, she was absolutely essential. And let’s not forget, she was a total lifesaver when they were extracting Kurama from Naruto – she kept him going when things looked hopeless.

Although Sakura didn’t defeat Kaguya herself, she played a crucial role in helping Naruto and Sasuke win the final battle. She didn’t focus on learning illusion techniques, choosing instead to become a medical ninja, but her precise chakra control made her very resistant to illusions.

What About Sakura’s Role in Boruto?

Sakura is the head of Konoha’s medical department and its hospital, but she doesn’t get much screen time in the series. The story suggests she’s constantly busy, juggling a demanding career with raising her daughter Sarada mostly on her own. This often leads to Sarada feeling frustrated with her father. Many fans feel Sakura’s character deserved more development, considering how strong and capable she is.

Could Sakura Play a Key Role in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex?

With Naruto away, Sakura had the skills and qualifications to become Hokage, but she doesn’t seem interested in the administrative and political side of the job. It looks like her abilities as a ninja will once again be overshadowed, this time by her daughter’s growing prominence.

Sarada taking on a bigger part in Boruto is great – she’s earned it. However, it’s frustrating that Sakura doesn’t get the same opportunity to really stand out. Since she’s one of the strongest characters not connected to the Otsutsuki clan, giving her a more prominent role, similar to what Naruto and Sasuke have received, would be compelling. It would also demonstrate that the story isn’t just focused on a few families like the Uzumaki, Uchiha, and Otsutsuki.
