Naruto: Sasuke’s Greatest Enemy Wasn’t Naruto Or Itachi

This post contains spoilers for Naruto.

Sasuke Uchiha is one of the most popular characters in Naruto. He quickly stood out to viewers with his unique personality and fighting skills, unlike some other characters. As a central figure in the story, Sasuke frequently battled powerful opponents, keeping him in the spotlight throughout the series.

Sasuke encountered many powerful opponents who deeply impacted him, helping him grow both as a ninja and as a person. While he often thought of Itachi and Naruto as his most significant rivals, one enemy ultimately left an even greater impression.

Danzo Was Sasuke’s Greatest Enemy

Danzo Was Responsible For The Uchiha Clan Massacre

  • Danzo forced Shisui to kill himself
  • He made Itachi murder his clan

In the world of Naruto, Danzo was truly Sasuke Uchiha’s greatest enemy, even if it doesn’t immediately appear that way. He was directly responsible for the Uchiha Clan massacre – the event that deeply traumatized Sasuke. Danzo feared the Uchiha’s powerful abilities but also desired them for himself. He first targeted Shisui, who was trying to prevent a coup, believing Shisui was a threat. Danzo killed Shisui and stole his eyes, driven by his own ambition and desire for power.

Following Shisui’s death, Danzo decided the Uchiha clan had to be eliminated and manipulated Itachi into carrying out the massacre. Itachi spared only Sasuke, driven by his love for his younger brother. This devastating loss of his entire family, especially his parents, deeply scarred Sasuke. Being so young, the event was incredibly traumatic, and it led him to harbor intense hatred towards Itachi.

After what happened, Sasuke hated Itachi for many years. He focused intensely on training and kept his distance from others to avoid getting sidetracked. When he realized how much stronger Itachi still was, Sasuke left the Hidden Leaf Village to train with Orochimaru. Orochimaru, a powerful ninja, promised Sasuke the power he needed to get revenge on Itachi.

Sasuke was prepared for a fight, determined to defeat Itachi no matter the cost. After a difficult and exhausting battle, he won. He believed that with Itachi defeated, he could finally find peace. However, everything changed when Obito revealed the truth: Itachi hadn’t been the villain Sasuke thought, but a pawn manipulated by the Hidden Leaf Village.

Obito revealed to Sasuke that the leaders of the Hidden Leaf Village were behind the Uchiha Clan’s destruction and the death of his brother. This news devastated Sasuke, as he struggled to accept that Itachi had been secretly protecting him all along while burdened with the terrible act of eliminating their clan. The pain Sasuke felt after killing Itachi ultimately stemmed from Danzo, who had manipulated Itachi into making that impossible choice. In killing Itachi, Sasuke unknowingly eliminated the person who cared for him the most.

Sasuke Got His Revenge, But It Was Too Late

Danzo Ruined Sasuke’s Childhood

Once Sasuke discovered the truth, he focused his anger on Danzo and the Hidden Leaf Village. He immediately confronted Danzo during the Five Kage Summit, where he learned the disturbing story of how Danzo had taken Sharingan eyes from deceased Uchiha clan members and grafted them onto himself. After a brutal battle, Sasuke defeated Danzo, taking revenge for his fallen clan. Although Sasuke achieved his goal, the damage Danzo had caused was permanent. Danzo was responsible for the loss of Sasuke’s family and friends, and ultimately drove him to leave the village, solidifying his place as Sasuke’s greatest enemy.
