This post contains for Naruto.
Naruto boasts an extensive and varied collection of characters, meticulously crafted by Kishimoto to avoid resemblance among them. His dedication resulted in virtually each character enjoying a dedicated following of fans.
Regrettably, Kishimoto often found it challenging to provide the same depth and development to all Naruto characters. On occasion, his choices even extinguished the excitement surrounding a character entirely, as was the case with Gaara.
Gaara Flopped Badly As A Fighter
He Hardly Improved As A Ninja
- Gaara was able to freely manipulate sand
- Shukaku granted him additional strength
Initially, Gaara appeared almost unbeatable, capable of taking on grown ninjas with ease. In the Chunin Exams, Gaara displayed his exceptional skills, leaving every contestant astonished. He sailed through the Forest of Death effortlessly. Throughout the one-on-one battles, Gaara further solidified why he was a top contender for the entire competition. Lee tried testing him, but Gaara ultimately came out victorious. Later, Gaara faced off against Sasuke Uchiha, but their battle was halted due to an attack by Orochimaru. Eventually, Gaara fought against Naruto in an intense duel. For a large part of the fight, Gaara maintained control, but it was Naruto who eventually claimed victory.
After the event, Gaara returned to the Sand Village and eventually succeeded as Kazekage. However, following the Konoha Crush, Gaara’s fighting abilities began to deteriorate. Despite being the Kazekage, Gaara rarely emerged victorious in battles. He was captured by Deidara and later had Shukaku extracted, which led to his death. Fortunately, Chiyo sacrificed herself to revive Gaara. In Part 2, Gaara didn’t perform as well as expected in fights, which was disappointing given his initial reputation as an exceptional fighter.
Gaara showed immense potential, yet unfortunately, he didn’t reach the peak of greatness that was expected. It seemed as though Kishimoto intended something different for him, since he didn’t grant Gaara significant power enhancements during his development. In essence, Gaara resembled Neji, another prodigious character whose potential remained untapped.
Gaara’s Growth As A Character Was Excellent
Gaara Improved A Lot As A Person
Previously mentioned, Gaara’s progression in combat ability didn’t meet expectations, yet his personal transformation was truly impressive. Initially, Gaara exhibited kindness and a desire to aid others. However, the treachery of his uncle shaped him into a ruthless assassin. Believing himself unlovable and useful solely as a tool of warfare, Gaara harbored resentment for an extended period. This bitterness persisted until he encountered Naruto, at which point it began to dissipate.
When Shukaku overpowered Gaara, he wreaked havoc that many would’ve found reason to eliminate him. However, unlike others, Naruto, the hero, aimed not at elimination but at rescuing Gaara and making him comprehend his loneliness wasn’t inevitable. At first, Gaara resisted this notion, viewing it as a trick. Yet, Naruto persisted, and in time, Gaara found himself yielding. It was then that Gaara recognized Naruto’s sincerity and understood that he truly shared his burden of pain.
After suffering a defeat, Gaara returned to the Hidden Sand Village transformed. He became more compassionate and stopped trying to control others. His family rejoiced as their brother was no longer a menace. In fact, he was chosen to be the Kazekage of the Hidden Sand. Gaara’s character development was evident when he chose to give up his life to shield the village from Deidara’s explosives.
As a die-hard Naruto fan, let me share two unforgettable instances from the series that truly showcased the growth and charisma of Gaara. The first took place at the Five Kage Summit, where I found myself face to face with Sasuke, now a renegade ninja. In an unexpected moment, Gaara delivered a speech that was nothing short of inspiring, revealing his newfound maturity.
The second time, Gaara captivated the entire Shinobi Alliance with another stirring address. His words were like a unifying force, helping all the ninjas to set aside their differences and band together to face a common enemy. It’s worth emphasizing that while some may argue Gaara was once a mediocre ninja, there’s no denying his character was nothing short of phenomenal!
