As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the formidable characters that call Naruto home. Right from birth, I was destined for greatness, shouldering the weighty responsibility of being a Jinchuriki. Yet, this burden also came with an extraordinary power, a treasure trove waiting to be unlocked. And boy, did I ever unleash it!

But did my newfound strength enable me to outshine one of the most revered ninjas and my father, Minato? That’s a question that stirs up quite the debate among fans. After all, surpassing such a legendary figure isn’t easy, even for someone like me. But I believe that with every challenge overcome and every obstacle conquered, I inched closer to becoming a true Hokage.

Has Naruto, who never knew his father (who sacrificed himself to save him), managed to achieve greatness like the legendary Fourth Hokage that he idolized? When Minato was alive, he was renowned as an extraordinary ninja, even earning the title of a “generational ninja” from the Third Hokage. Now that Naruto has become the Hokage himself, has he been able to maintain such a reputation or perhaps exceed it?

How Strong was Minato?

A Generational Prodigy

Even though Minato lived a brief life, he is still recognized as one of the most iconic characters in Naruto. He stood out as a prodigy, demonstrated by him achieving the highest scores ever at Konoha Academy. Furthermore, Jiraiya selected him as his apprentice after Minato joined his genin team. During his adolescence, Minato single-handedly rescued Kushina, who had been kidnapped by Kumogakure ninjas.

Minato’s Incredible Feats

Minato was renowned for developing formidable jutsu such as the Rasengan, and his exceptional control of the Flying Thunder God Technique earned him the nickname “The Yellow Flash.” During the Third Shinobi World War, he commanded respect that bordered on fear among enemy ninjas. So feared was Minato that Iwagakure issued a “capture or kill” decree upon sighting him. Even the powerful Onoki felt compelled to sign a peace treaty due to Minato’s presence, effectively ending the Third Shinobi World War.

However, with the pride on our line, we sent 1,000 of our shinobi.

And I heard that it took just one of them, the Yellow Flash, to stop the invasion.

And that’s the reality of it.

– Onoki, Episode 349

The Fourth Hokage’s Legacy

His remarkable efforts during the Third Great Ninja War earned him the title of the Fourth Hokage. In the attack on Konoha by Kuruma, Minato swiftly intervened to protect the village. He separated Kurama’s chakra into two parts and sealed it within himself and a newborn Naruto. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, both he and Naruto were brought back to life by Orochimaru and together they defeated Obito.

Did Naruto Surpass Minato?

It’s no secret that Minato is among the most powerful characters in Naruto. However, it’s not at all unexpected that Naruto managed to outshine Minato. From being a Jinchuriki since his birth, Naruto possessed the capability of becoming one of the series’ strongest characters. He was guided and mentored by strong individuals such as Kakashi and Jiraiya. By the end of Shippuden, he had gained access to incredibly powerful abilities like…

  • Sage Mode: an empowered state caused by the blending of natural energy and chakra.
  • Baryon Mode: a tailed-beast transformation that permanently exhausts chakra.
  • Six Paths Sage Mode: a divine transformation gifted to him by Hagoromo Otsutsuki.

Naruto’s Morals Make Him Even Stronger

In the anime series, he played a crucial role in helping characters such as Sasuke and Gaara overcome their troubled pasts and transform into powerful allies. He also managed to convert antagonists like Obito and Konan, turning them into supporters of his ideology for peace. His ambition was finally realized when he ascended to the position of Hokage. As the Seventh Hokage, he guided Konoha through numerous crises and saved it on numerous occasions.

Minato’s Biggest Limitation

The main factor that Naruto outshone Minato was due to the fact that Minato didn’t live for very long initially. Despite his brief existence, Minato accomplished a great deal. He developed immense strength and would likely have grown even stronger had he lived longer. In critical situations, the villagers frequently felt that if Minato were still alive, the crisis could have been quickly resolved.

In spite of having a brief lifespan, Minato stood out as an extraordinary shinobi. His offspring followed in his footsteps, ultimately surpassing him in strength. Although they varied in power, their ethical values and impact on Konoha were equally significant.

Naruto is available to watch on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
