As a seasoned anime enthusiast who has witnessed countless tales unfold, I must say that the intrigue and enigma surrounding certain characters in Naruto truly set it apart from other series. The depth of their backstories, the twists in their motivations, and the impact they had on the narrative made each character’s journey a captivating experience.
Characters in the Naruto series are known for their enigmatic nature, taking the concept of mystery to extraordinary heights. When a character meticulously conceals their actions and intentions, it piques the curiosity of viewers, making them eager to uncover the truth, even if it takes hundreds of episodes or chapters to reveal it. However, it’s worth noting that not all mysteries surrounding the characters in Naruto have been fully resolved, even years after the manga’s final chapter.
Masashi Kishimoto, creator of Naruto, repeatedly demonstrated his skill at crafting enigmatic characters and providing climactic revelations that offer new perspectives. However, not all were satisfied with these developments, as some fans still hold lingering questions about the characters.
8. Teuchi
Barely Anything Is Known About One Of Naruto’s Closest Companions
- First Appearance: Episode 2
Fans may recall Teuchi as the ramen chef who frequently treated Naruto with his favorite dish whenever they met. Despite appearing to be one of Naruto’s closest friends and perhaps the only individual who didn’t reprimand him during his childhood because of his connection to Kurama, there is very little information available about Teuchi.
It’s evident that he had made up his mind to pursue a career as a chef well before Naruto was born, but the reason behind his strong desire to specialize in ramen cooking remains unclear. What’s even more puzzling is how, when the entire village harbored animosity towards Naruto, Teuchi was the exception who welcomed him, suggesting he may have been oblivious to the Nine-Tails incident. Despite hints of information scattered throughout, many aspects of Teuchi’s life and his perspective on the world remain enigmas that fans have been trying to unravel for years.
7. Dan Kato
Dan’s Absurdly Strong Spirit Transformation Technique Raises A Lot Of Questions
- First Appearance: Shippuden Episode 129
Previously, Dan Kato harbored a romantic connection with Tsunade and shared her ambition to someday serve as the Hokage, aiming to safeguard their village from danger. Regrettably, during the Second Great Ninja War, Dan is believed to have taken the lives of numerous shinobi, primarily utilizing his Spirit Transformation Technique.
In the popular series Naruto, there are many unique Jutsu, and one that has often perplexed fans is the one used by Dan. This Jutsu allows Dan to instantly defeat anyone he possesses, potentially even Kage. However, only this ability was demonstrated before Dan’s death during the war. The question that remains unanswered is just how powerful was Dan? Could he have been strong enough to become Hokage?
6. A (First Raikage)
The First Raikage Doesn’t Receive Anywhere Near As Much Screentime As Other Kage
- First Appearance: Shippuden Episode 369
In the final stretch of the series, several former Kage have their moments in the limelight, yet there’s scarcely any information available about character A, the first Raikage, apart from a quick flashback. When viewers do catch a glimpse of A, it’s during a conversation with other Kage where he transfers territory to the Yotsuki clan and ridicules Hashirama for lowering his head, stating this action didn’t symbolize a “Durable leader.
Without a doubt, he was a firm diplomat capable of facing off against other Kage, yet fans are only given this brief look into this captivating character whose path to becoming the first in his role is left unclear. Additionally, there’s no insight provided as to how A established the Land of Kumo or his remarkable skills, which made him an incredibly powerful shinobi.
5. Kushimaru Kuriarare
Why Does Kushimaru Still Wear An Anbu Mask? And Why Did He Murder His Own Sensei?
- First Appearance: Shippuden Episode 265
It’s undeniable that Kushimaru was a part of the Seven Mist Swordsman; however, much about his past remains unclear, such as the reasons behind his choice to assassinate his own master and why he dons a Masked Shinobi (Anbu) mask from the village of the Mists. The act of killing his sensei is hinted at in the anime, but it leaves us wondering what led Kushimaru to such a violent path. A more interesting puzzle, though, is the reason for his wearing an Anbu mask, as this raises questions about his allegiances and actions within the Mist village.
This simple piece of decoration implies Kushimaru was once a member of the Anbu, yet decided to continue wearing the mask even when he became a swordsman, maybe as a way to mock his former group. Again though, Kishimoto never goes in-depth with Kushimaru’s backstory, making him one of the most mysterious of the Seven Hidden Mist Swordsmen.
4. Kisame Hoshigaki
Kisame’s Shark-Like Appearance Has Always Left Fans Puzzled
- First Appearance: Episode 81
In the popular anime series Naruto, the background story of Kisame, one of the Seven Mist Swordsmen, is widely recognized by fans. However, what remains enigmatic is the reason behind Kisame’s shark-like appearance as an Akatsuki member, a mystery that remains unexplained in the show. Over time, numerous theories have surfaced among fans. One theory that has garnered attention since the debut of Boruto is that Kisame’s distinctive appearance may be due to his sword, Samehada, similar to its influence on Shizuma from the Hoshigaki clan in Boruto.
Some suggest that Kisame’s transformative abilities could stem from his initiation into the Seven Swordsmen, or it could be due to an intense fascination with sharks leading him to alter his physical form into a humanoid shark-like creature. The mystery surrounding this aspect of Kisame remains unresolved, but it undeniably adds an element of intrigue and depth to his character and background.
3. Hidan
Hidan’s Religion Devoted To Jashin Was Shrouded In Mystery For The Entirety Of Shippuden
- First Appearance: Shippuden Episode 71
Hidan is such a strange character that he almost feels ripped out of a different show entirely. The most obvious oddity about Hidan is the god he worships, known as Lord Jashin, who Hidan will make sacrifices to in order to gain immortality. However, who this Jashin actually is, and whether other people followed him, was a mystery for many years until the Boruto series expanded on it a little more through the character of Ryuki.
Some fans theorized Jashin was a figment of Hidan’s imagination and that he was using a Kekkei Genkai technique that simply turns his body into a living voodoo doll. It’s also still unclear whether Hidan met his death after Shikamaru buried him, or if he somehow managed to crawl out to continue his bloodthirsty rampage.
2. Madara Uchiha
A Man Whose True Motives And Strength Remained A Mystery For Much Of The Series
- First Appearance: Shippuden Episode 322
In many parts of the Naruto series, Madara is frequently mentioned as a legendary figure resembling a divine entity who traversed the ninja world in ancient times. The leader of the Uchiha clan, who could hold his own against the First Hokage, often has his name cropping up in the narrative, leaving viewers guessing about his true identity, his ultimate scheme, and whether he truly possessed the power as alleged.
Through many episodes, Madara remained an enigmatic ancient character, shrouded in mystery. This mystery intensified significantly during the weekly releases of Naruto, sparking numerous discussions online. However, it wasn’t until the Fourth Great Ninja War that he was brought back to life and unveiled his masterplan for the Infinite Tsukuyomi. This revelation is now widely regarded as one of the series’ most notable moments.
1. Itachi Uchiha
Itachi Had Fans Guessing What He Was Really Up To From The Moment He First Appeared On Screen
- First Appearance: Episode 81
From the very instant Itachi debuted on screen, audiences found themselves puzzled about his true intentions, as he inexplicably attacked Sasuke. Although the show hints at Itachi’s role in annihilating his entire clan, sparing only Sasuke, it was evident that there were deeper secrets hidden within this narrative that Sasuke had not been privy to.
Throughout the first part of the story and much of Shippuden, Itachi’s true intentions remained shrouded in mystery. It wasn’t until his decisive encounter with Sasuke that we learned why he had turned against his own clan. His motivation was to avert another Great Ninja War and safeguard his younger brother, even if the act left an indelible mark of trauma on him. Despite this, Itachi was exceptionally skilled at concealing the reasons for his betrayal, maintaining the secret until the very end, taking it with him as he departed from this world.
