This article contains spoilers from the Naruto series.
The Boruto series has showcased many strong characters, and early on, fans learned about the incredibly powerful Otsutsuki Clan. Even with these new additions, Naruto Uzumaki remained one of the strongest characters in the story. Much of Naruto’s power came from Kurama, the Tailed Beast sealed inside him. Naruto was an exceptionally powerful Jinchuriki – a human host for a Tailed Beast – and few could match him in a fight.
As the Boruto series progressed, Naruto’s role and strength diminished. Currently, he’s no longer considered the most powerful Jinchuriki, which is evident in the story. The series appears to be moving away from the traditional Jinchuriki system, introducing a new power dynamic where Tailed Beasts, like Jura, are reborn as humans.
Naruto Is No Longer A Jinchuriki In Boruto
At the start of the Boruto series, Naruto Uzumaki was the most powerful person ever to host a Tailed Beast. He skillfully used the power of Kurama, and maintained a link with all the other Tailed Beasts, allowing him to draw on their abilities in fights. But after Kurama’s death, that connection to all the Tailed Beasts was completely cut off.
You be good, Naruto. And don’t follow me too soon. — Kurama to Naruto Uzumaki
After defeating Isshiki, Naruto Uzumaki was no longer a host for the Nine-Tails. While he remained a very powerful ninja, he wasn’t as strong as he once was without that connection. Following his passing, Killer Bee was recognized as the most powerful Jinchuriki in the series.
Jinchuriki System Is Officially Outdated In Boruto
The Jinchuriki are incredibly strong, as demonstrated throughout the Naruto series, but Boruto intends to do away with the entire system. It appears the creators, Kishimoto and Ikemoto, are moving away from the idea of sealing Tailed Beasts inside people. A new approach introduced in the Two Blue Vortex arc will permanently replace the Jinchuriki system.
Listen, Himawari. You’re not a Jinchuriki. You’re more akin to Jura. — Kurama to Himawari
When Jura was introduced in Boruto, it was quickly established that he’s different from other Shinju. Unlike them, he wasn’t created from a host body; he is the original, young form of the Ten-tails, making him exceptionally powerful and nearly impossible to defeat.
Fans later learned that, similar to Jura, Himawari is also a vessel for Kurama’s power. This came as a surprise, as many believed she was simply a Jinchuriki—someone who contains a tailed beast. It’s now confirmed that she’s actually much more powerful than that.
New Tailed Beast Incarnates Are Stronger Than Jinchuriki
Image from Manga Plus I’ve been watching the Naruto world evolve, and it’s interesting to see how the role of the Jinchuriki seems to be fading. They used to be the most powerful beings around, but things are changing. It looks like the Tailed Beasts aren’t just going to be sealed inside people anymore. Instead, they’ll actually become people – fully incarnate within a human host. From what we’ve seen, this seems like a much better situation for the Beasts. They’ll be able to build genuine connections with others, and, crucially, they’ll become far more powerful. The story has already shown us that a Tailed Beast in its incarnate form is significantly stronger than when it’s just sealed inside someone.
The idea of humans hosting Tailed Beasts – known as Jinchuriki – is effectively over with Boruto’s story. Killer Bee is probably the last one, and as he ages, that means the Tailed Beasts themselves will be the only ones remaining.
The next chapter of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, chapter 29, will be available on December 18, 2025. It will be released at 10 AM Eastern Time / 3 PM Coordinated Universal Time. Fans can read it for free on the Manga Plus and Shonen Jump apps, as usual.
