Summary
- Naruto lacked natural talent in ninjutsu, taijutsu, and chakra control.
- He overcame setbacks, rejection, and failures through hard work.
- Naruto’s success was earned with determination and perseverance.
The Naruto universe has spawned numerous prodigies and innately brilliant individuals during its course. Characters like Sasuke Uchiha, Neji Hyuga, Itachi Uchiha, Minato Namikaze, and Kakashi Hatake are just a few examples of the exceptionally skilled and gifted ninja revered in Konoha village. However, unlike these characters, Naruto Uzumaki, the main character of the story, was not naturally endowed with traditional abilities.
Right from the start of the anime series “Naruto“, the Seventh Hokage found it difficult to execute even the most elementary jutsu at the ninja academy. He was clueless about how chakra functioned, and his mispronunciation of it as “Chatra” only added to the confusion. It wasn’t until a younger Konohamaru gave him an extensive explanation that he began to grasp the concept. This underscores his apparent lack of natural talent and the reason why many underestimated his abilities.
This section contains spoilers for the Naruto series.
Naruto Uzumaki Is a Hero Without Natural Gifts
Naruto Had No Natural Aptitude for Ninjutsu

Prior to honing his skills in ninjutsu and achieving the strength he possesses today, Naruto frequently struggled during his time at the ninja academy. He lacked aptitude in ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu, and even managing his chakra was far from impressive. Meanwhile, as his peers lauded Sasuke’s genius, they ridiculed Naruto for his failures, branding him the class jester. Matters grew worse when he was seen as a hopeless case by both his peers and the village at large.
Unlike Minato Namikaze, Naruto’s father who excelled academically and was renowned for his prodigious abilities, Naruto barely managed to pass the graduation exam. His success was largely due to his mastery of the forbidden multi-shadow clone jutsu from the Scroll of Seals. Prior to this, he could only create a shaky clone that couldn’t even maintain its stability, indicating a lack of proficiency in managing his chakra effectively.
If you don’t like the hand that fate’s dealt you with, fight for a new one.—Naruto
Apart from his eagerness to train physically, Naruto showed little interest in learning the fundamentals of ninjutsu initially. He assumed physical strength would magically enhance his abilities. However, his lackadaisical attitude towards learning was more a reflection of not having a consistent mentor. Iruka did care for him, but it wasn’t until after the graduation exams that their bond deepened. Furthermore, the villagers shunned Naruto, avoiding any association with him altogether.
Naruto Started His Journey Without a Kekkei Genkai
Naruto Had No Special Head Start
In the series, Naruto Uzumaki may have possessed a potent lineage, but it didn’t grant him any initial advantage whatsoever. As he embarked on his journey, he lacked any unique Kekkei Genkai despite being the sole child of the Fourth Hokage and bearing the Uzumaki bloodline. Instead, he had to begin anew, unlike characters like Sasuke and Neji who benefited from their lineages’ special abilities. Additionally, Naruto was oblivious about his ancestry, unaware of the extraordinary techniques that his parents were capable of.
Somebody told me I’m a failure. I’ll prove them wrong.—Naruto
Initially, Naruto merely had Kurama confined within his body, but contrary to popular belief, it was not his inherent talent that made him exceptional. Instead, Naruma developed a connection with Kurama through rigorous training and perseverance. Interestingly, just like Momoshiki torments Boruto, Kurama once attempted to undermine Naruto in the past. Furthermore, Kurama’s presence was instrumental in turning the Leaf Village against Naruto, labeling him an outcast and a curse, making his life even more challenging.
Naruto’s Success Was Earned, Not Gifted
Naruto’s Hard Work Over Natural Talent

Through persistence and diligence, Naruto eventually enjoyed the rewards of his efforts. En route, he was bestowed with additional abilities, such as the power of the Sage of Six Paths. He even garnered faith and admiration from every resident in the Leaf Village, even those who had initially doubted him or merely believed. Moreover, he made his mentors proud, ranging from Iruka to Jiraiya to Kakashi. Essentially, Naruto’s unbreakable spirit, relentless determination, and tenacity served as the foundation of his tale.
Hard work is worthless to those who don’t believe in themselves.—Naruto
In essence, Naruto’s accomplishments were not primarily due to inherent ability or genius. Instead, he outworked everyone else, persevering through numerous setbacks, rejections, and defeats. Gradually, he demonstrated his worth, battling every step of the way until he realized his dream of becoming the Hokage. In short, Naruto serves as a testament that diligence and determination can surpass natural talent in the world of Naruto.
