Naruto: Where Is The Senju Clan In The Boruto Era?

The following article contains spoilers for Naruto and Boruto.

Much of the conflict in Naruto originally stemmed from the ancient rivalry between Asura and Indra Otsutsuki, a feud carried on by their descendants, particularly the Senju and Uchiha clans. However, as the story unfolded, this clan conflict became less central to the plot. This makes sense when you consider that Naruto Uzumaki, not a member of the Senju clan, was the reincarnation of Asura, which is why the Senju weren’t featured prominently in the manga.

The story reveals the Senju clan played a crucial role in establishing Konoha and were once a dominant force among ninja clans. Considering their importance in history, it’s surprising they haven’t been seen in Boruto. What became of the Senju clan, and where are its members now?

Where Does the Senju Come From?

The Senju Clan and the Uzumaki Clan share a common ancestor in Asura Otsutsuki, making them like cousins – though exactly when their family lines split isn’t known. Over time, members of both clans often married each other. The Uzumaki were experts in sealing techniques, and frequently helped the Senju with these when needed. Unlike many other clans who focus on one specific skill, the Senju trained in all areas – hand-to-hand combat, ninjutsu, and illusion techniques – to become well-rounded fighters.

The origins of the clan system remain unclear. While Naruto provides history on these clans, starting from the end of the Warring States Period, there’s a significant gap in the story. We know about Kaguya Otsutsuki, her sons, and the conflict between Indra and Asura, but not how the Otsutsuki clan evolved into the major clans of Konoha – like the Senju, Uzumaki, Uchiha, and Hyuga. The details of the Otsutsuki’s disappearance and how they branched into these clans haven’t been fully explained. Essentially, the Senju clan is descended from the Otsutsuki, but the exact process of that transformation is still a mystery.

How the Senju and the Uchiha Clans Are Related

The Senju and Uchiha clans have always been fierce rivals, leading some fans to wonder if the Uzumaki clan originally came from the Senju. However, the story doesn’t explain how these clans first appeared. It’s just as likely that all three – Senju, Uchiha, and Uzumaki – simply share a common ancestor in Asura Otsutsuki, developing separately over time. Ultimately, all three clans trace back to the Otsutsuki family, with the Senju and Uzumaki descending from Asura, while the Uchiha came from the lineage of Indra Otsutsuki.

The long-standing conflict between Asura and Indra sparked a deep rivalry that was passed down through generations, particularly between the Uchiha and Senju clans. While the Uzumaki clan likely disliked the Uchiha as well, they generally avoided direct conflict, especially since they lived far away in Uzushiogakure. This meant the Senju and Uchiha were constantly battling each other. For centuries, this cycle of fighting continued, mirroring the conflict of their ancestors. Ultimately, this constant warfare likely made both the Senju and Uchiha the most powerful clans in the ninja world.

Senju-Dominance Still Fed Strife with the Uchiha Clan

After the long Warring States Period, the Uchiha and Senju clans decided to end their fighting and create the Hidden Leaf Village. But disagreements soon arose, making things tense again. The Uchiha felt like they hadn’t truly made peace, but had simply given up. Hashirama Senju initially wanted Madara Uchiha to be the first Hokage, but his brother, Tobirama, argued that the leader should be chosen by the villagers. Ultimately, because many people didn’t trust Madara, Hashirama became the First Hokage instead.

The old rivalry between the clans flared up again, but it didn’t escalate into a full-scale war, even though Madara later attempted to destroy the village using the Nine Tails. For many years, the Uchiha clan felt that Konoha was being run more and more by the Senju, especially since the first two Hokage were Senju, and each Hokage typically chose their replacement. This led the Uchiha to believe that even the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, was someone the Senju had favored.

The Rise of Minato Namikaze Seemingly Calmed Things Down

For many years, the people of the village lived peacefully, with disagreements kept under control. But the Third Great Shinobi War changed everything, leaving Konoha filled with worry and distrust. Fugaku Uchiha, Sasuke and Itachi’s father, didn’t receive enough recognition for his contributions during the war. After the war ended, Minato Namikaze, despite not being from the Senju clan, became the Fourth Hokage. Even though Minato had no issues with the Uchiha, the village as a whole became increasingly fearful of them.

After another attack by the mysterious creature, the villagers suspected a rival clan was responsible, unaware that Obito Uchiha was acting alone. Believing the Senju clan held too much power in Konoha, Fugaku Uchiha began plotting a takeover. Meanwhile, Obito, pretending to be Madara Uchiha, manipulated Itachi into a terrible choice: betraying his own clan to save his brother, Sasuke. This deception culminated in the Uchiha Clan Massacre, where Itachi tragically killed every member of the clan except Sasuke.

Does the Senju Clan Still Exist in Boruto?

As a huge fan of the Naruto universe, I’ve always been fascinated by the Senju clan! They were such powerhouses in Konoha’s early days, but it’s amazing to me that currently, Tsunade seems to be the only major Senju we really see. It’s hinted there are others around, and lots of villagers probably have Senju lineage, but she’s the one carrying the torch as Hashirama’s granddaughter and the Fifth Hokage. Even in Boruto, she’s still around, and there’s a suggestion that other Senju are out there too, but the clan itself doesn’t seem to be a major force anymore. They’re not really ‘active’ as a clan, but what really lasts is their spirit – the Will of Fire! It’s still the foundation of everything Konoha stands for, and that’s the Senju’s true legacy.

I’ve noticed that the old rivalry between the Uchiha and Senju clans has really faded. With the Uchiha almost wiped out and Sasuke spending so much time seeking revenge instead of competing with the Senju, the conflict just lost its purpose. Things have shifted in other ways too. Since Kushina Uzumaki came to Konoha and Naruto became Hokage, the Uzumaki clan has become more prominent, kind of stepping into the role the Senju once held. While a lot of Senju likely blended into other families through marriage, the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex storyline could potentially bring another important Senju character into the mix. But honestly, it doesn’t seem very likely right now. It looks like Tsunade will probably be the last truly significant Senju in Konoha for a long time, especially since she never had any children – any kids she did have would be seen as important just because of who their parents were.

What Are the Chances of a Senju Appearing in Boruto?

Currently, it doesn’t look like a direct member of the Senju clan will appear in Boruto. However, the Senju are famous for naturally having Wood Release abilities, and Matsuri, one of the Shinju, uses this technique. This is because she was created after a Claw Grime absorbed Moegi Kazamatsuri, who is also skilled in Wood Release. Although Moegi isn’t officially a Senju, she likely has Senju ancestry. The story could therefore explore her and her abilities, even without introducing a new core member of the Senju family.

People like Jiraiya, the Third Hokage, and Elder Chiyo had something you two are missing. It’s faith! My grandfather, the First Hokage, believed in you and gave you responsibility for the village. Now you need to have the same faith in these young ninja and trust them with the future!

— Tsunade Senju

Although Wood Release is a rare inherited ability unique to the Senju clan, others have been able to use it by receiving cells from Hashirama. This suggests there might be another reason for Moegi’s skills. With the Shinju Clones and the Otsutsuki clan becoming the main threats, the story seems to be moving away from focusing on the Senju. However, because of their connection to the Otsutsuki, the Senju could still be important in defeating the ultimate villain, especially as many fans predict the fight with Shibai will be the story’s final battle.
