The following article contains spoilers for Naruto, Boruto, and related series.
I’ve always thought of Naruto as the most well-known ninja anime out there. The story of Naruto Uzumaki has really grabbed people for years, and it’s amazing to see the world continuing to grow with series like Boruto and other spin-offs. But what really stands out to me is how well the whole world is built – it feels incredibly detailed and thoughtfully created.
The last major enemy in the original Naruto manga isn’t Sasuke or the Uchiha clan – it’s Kaguya Otsutsuki, a powerful being who arrived on Earth long ago. While some fans find her a weak villain, Kaguya is actually connected to a rich backstory about a clan that travels the universe, destroying planets to gain power. She likely holds the key to understanding many of the Otsutsuki clan’s secrets.
The Otsutsuki Clan in Naruto
The Otsutsuki Clan is now a major focus in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, and they’ll continue to be important in the upcoming Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. However, they were first shown in the final part of the original Naruto series. Though characters like Hagoromo, the Sage of Six Paths, appeared earlier in Naruto Shippuden, we didn’t really learn about the clan until Kaguya Otsutsuki showed up.
I’m completely fascinated by the Otsutsuki clan! We’re still learning a lot about how they’re organized, but what we do know is incredible. They’re basically these super powerful aliens who travel the universe planting these ‘Chakra Fruits’ on planets using these massive ‘God Trees’. It seems their main goal – at least for the strongest members of the clan – is to become unbelievably powerful. The really dark side is that these God Trees drain a planet’s life force, so the Otsutsuki are essentially hopping from world to world, destroying them in the process. And it’s not just about wiping out anyone who isn’t one of them! They actually sacrifice weaker members of their own clan – offering them up to the Ten-Tails to help the God Trees grow. It’s a ruthless cycle where they discard the less powerful to become even stronger. It’s a bit terrifying, but also so compelling!
How Boruto Has Expanded the Otsutsuki Lore
In Naruto, we initially only had a basic understanding of Kaguya and her clan, the Otsutsuki. We knew Kaguya and Isshiki Otsutsuki arrived on Earth together to grow the Divine Tree and eventually harvest its Chakra Fruit. However, Kaguya turned on Isshiki, attacking him and leaving him for dead before consuming the fruit herself to gain all its power. While their exact purpose wasn’t clear, the plan wasn’t for Kaguya to eat the fruit – they were meant to simply take it.
Initially, it was unknown if the character was intended as a sacrifice. However, the series Boruto: Naruto Next Generations later revealed that she wasn’t killed, and that Isshiki survived by possessing Jigen. He then spent hundreds of years building the Kara organization and plotting to gain more power, including trying to use Kawaki as a new host. Boruto also introduced Momoshiki Otsutsuki, a powerful member of the Otsutsuki clan, who came to Earth to investigate Kaguya’s fate. While Momoshiki first appeared in Boruto: Naruto the Movie, both the manga and anime have added to his backstory. By the end of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Momoshiki marked Boruto Uzumaki with a Karma, hinting at a possible return in Boruto: TBV.

The latest installment also introduced Shibai Otsutsuki, who is thought to have gained god-like powers by eating many Chakra Fruits. Some fans believe he once led the clan and might return as the main villain in the Two-Blue Vortex arc. However, the story leaves many questions unanswered. We still don’t know who currently leads the clan, where they come from, or how the Otsutsukis began their travels across the universe.
Kaguya is Actually Cool and Strong-Willed
Although Kaguya’s backstory isn’t fully developed in the series and feels a little hurried, she’s more complex than she initially seems. Boruto adds depth to her character by revealing she wasn’t just a puppet of Isshiki – she was a relatively unimportant member of the clan. Her attempt to kill Isshiki and steal the Chakra Fruit was an act of rebellion against the entire clan structure, not just her assigned task. This suggests the Otsutsuki clan isn’t unified and opens the possibility of seeing other rebellious members in the future.
I’ve noticed something interesting about Kaguya. Even though she eventually became unstable, she really grew to care for Earth. The anime makes it clear she was upset by all the fighting and actually wanted a peaceful world. She tried to create that peace, but in a very controlling way, and her idea of a perfect society seems quite different from what we see other Otsutsuki aiming for in Boruto. It’s also revealed she fell in love with a human – her sons were half-Otsutsuki, half-human. The anime expands on this by showing us her husband, Emperor Tenji, and it’s pretty obvious she had a relationship, likely involving love, given she had children in both the manga and anime. Of course, the manga could still decide there wasn’t any romance involved, maybe she just wanted to have children or simply sought pleasure, but the evidence strongly suggests a deeper connection.
Looking at this world, our Earth, it feels like a cherished home, a place I need to protect. I’ve seen enough damage, and honestly, I just want this fighting to stop. Let’s call it even.
— Kaguya Otsutsuki
I’ve been studying Kaguya’s family history, and it’s really struck me how often peaceful individuals get caught up in conflict. Her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, were known for wanting peace, and Hagoromo even developed Ninshu – the art that eventually became ninjutsu – to help bring people together. It’s interesting because even Indra Otsutsuki, who later used chakra for war, originally seemed to have good intentions. Seeing this pattern, I can’t help but wonder if Kaguya herself started out as someone who desired peace, but was ultimately driven mad by the immense power she wielded.
Her descent into madness stemmed from a desperate need to reclaim the chakra passed down to her sons. Though not inherently malicious, her relentless pursuit of power ultimately broke her mind. Interestingly, she wasn’t as destructive as her family; Kaguya didn’t aim to obliterate the Earth or humanity, only to control them and possibly utilize them against her own clan. The concept of transforming the benevolent Princess Kaguya from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter into an antagonist is a strikingly creative and daring choice.
Kaguya Looks “Mid” Because of Later Events
Watching the Boruto series, I’ve noticed Kaguya sometimes feels a little underwhelming as a villain. It’s not her fault, exactly – the stakes have gotten so incredibly high, and everyone is just so powerful now. Characters like Sarada seem capable of taking her on alone, and the introduction of new dojutsu really pushed the power levels over the edge. Still, I think any villain connected to the Otsutsuki clan, even a relatively weak one motivated by something personal like revenge, is interesting. Kaguya herself is actually a pretty complex character, even if she doesn’t always come across that way.
Considering the story’s established background, the presence of both Kaguya and Code suggests that the biggest threats might actually be the lesser-known members of the clan. Since the main branch appears to be focused on conquest and self-interest, it raises the question of whether those who prioritize peace are intentionally kept at the bottom of the hierarchy, treated as expendable. This could mean that every low-ranking Otsutsuki could become a valuable ally if a war breaks out against the clan.
Will the Otsutsuki Return in Boruto: TBV?
Currently, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is centered around Jura and the Shinju clones. However, it’s hinted that Momoshiki will try to take over Boruto Uzumaki again, and Shibai will likely appear as the main villain towards the end of the series. Boruto has repeatedly warned that the Otsutsuki clan poses a danger to humanity, a sentiment shared by Jura. Kawaki also fears the Otsutsuki’s return, which is why he wants to kill Boruto – he believes Boruto’s Karma will ultimately cause destruction.
There’s good reason to think Shibai will show up, but other members of the Otsutsuki clan could also arrive on Earth, similar to how Momoshiki did. Plus, Amado’s research might be connected to the clan, and some fans suspect he’s actually an Otsutsuki himself. Considering Boruto is now part Otsutsuki, you could argue they’ve already returned in a way.
